A reflection of Pastor Alvin Christian recording a video in front of empty shelves in his food bank.UPDATED 08/04/2026 WITH NEW INFO

Alvin Christian has fed up to 800 families a day from God's Store House Food Bank in Bluefield, West Virginia. This month, his freezers sat empty. And not from a supply shortage. Instead, apparently, Christian has been turning away food donations himself, after learning some of the suppliers worked with LGBTQ-affiliated groups.

It raises an old religious question wearing new clothes: does feeding the hungry come with a doctrinal test attached, or is mercy supposed to be unconditional?

What Happened at God's Store House?

Christian founded God's Store House in 2023, and it grew fast. By early this year, the pantry was serving more than 8,000 families a month across four counties in West Virginia and Virginia, growth that pushed Christian to start raising money for a larger building. "It gives me great pleasure to see a smile on somebody's face," he told a local news station in 2023, describing why he took on the work.

That momentum stalled this week. In a video he later deleted, Christian told followers his freezers were bare, and that donors had offered to restock them. He turned the food down anyway, he said, after doing his own research and finding the donors' ties to LGBTQ-affiliated organizations.

While Christian would later delete that video, it was archived by another Facebook user, Hairston Nes.

In the video, Christian explicitly cites his faith as the motivating factor behind his decision: "As a man-of-God and standing with faith in God, I refuse to receive food from anybody that has anything, is tied into [the gay rights movement]."

Another community member apparently took it upon himself to call Christian and express his feelings about the issue. A recording of that alleged call was also uploaded to Facebook.

For a pantry that had grown into a lifeline across four counties, that meant real families losing a source of groceries they had come to count on. Christian did not respond to a request for comment from Friendly Atheist, who first reported his decision, though he addressed the fallout directly the next morning in a livestream video.

(We had included a copy of this video when this piece was initially published, but it appears as though Christian has since removed the post).

In his response stream, throughout which the camera remains aimed at the floor, Christian seemed to suggest that much of the controversy could be attributed to a misunderstanding. He said that it was not his intention to refuse to accept donated food from groups affiliated with LGBTQ+ groups, and instead clarified that he was refusing to purchase food from vendors who were affiliated with LGBTQ+ groups or causes for fear that some portion of the purchase price could go toward supporting those groups.

That account is difficult to square with his own earlier statement.

He further indicated that he did not maintain a practice of refusing to provide food to individuals who entered his food bank as a result of their characteristics. This pledge that he would not refuse to provide food to particular individuals was repeated across both of the videos.

The response video has received hundreds of comments, and while there are some statements of support for Christian, many of the comments indicate that there is ongoing concern and anger over his practices. Historically, Christian has been a vocal and active user of social media, though no new posts appear to have been added to his Facebook page since July 28th.

Is This Kind of Rejection Common?

It is more common than it should be. A widely cited 2022 analysis found more than six in ten food pantries across a dozen states are run by churches or other faith-based groups, and a Williams Institute study found 14 percent of LGBTQ+ adults have avoided a faith-based pantry altogether, worried about the reception waiting for them at the door.

The USDA's own nutrition agency has noted that food insufficiency runs roughly three times higher among transgender people than the general population, meaning the group most likely to hesitate at a church food pantry's door is also among the hungriest.

But faith-based charity is not one thing. In Oklahoma City, a pantry at the Church of the Open Arms serves the neighborhood around the city's gay district, led by Laura Choate, who was pushed out of her own family's home at 11 for coming out. Her pantry makes welcome the starting point for every visitor, not a condition to be earned.

"We're very aware that some places aren't as open to everyone," said Lorrie Clevenger, a program director at the hunger-relief group WhyHunger, describing the broader landscape her organization tracks. Feeding America, the country's largest hunger-relief network, works across that same landscape without screening partners by politics or faith.

Although it is unclear, it appears from his initial video that Feeding America is the food supplier that Christian has taken issue with this week.

Christian's decision fits a pattern this blog has tracked before, institutions treating LGBTQ affiliation as disqualifying even at real cost to their own stated mission. Only 2 percent of the churches contacted during one recent cold-snap survey agreed to open their doors to homeless neighbors overnight, most citing liability fears rather than theology. A Christian radio host was fired last year for voicing support for LGBTQ+ weddings, over the objections of his own listeners.

Supporters of Christian's stance would point to Scripture's warning against being "unequally yoked," a passage some conservative Christians read as barring partnership with groups whose values conflict with their own, even indirectly. A ministry, on that reading, answers to God's standards first, and no law requires Christian to accept help from groups he disagrees with.

But conviction has a cost. Every box of food he refuses is a family that goes without, in a corner of Appalachia already stretched thin by hunger.

Where should the line sit between guarding a ministry's beliefs and feeding the people already standing in front of it? And if you ran a charity forced to choose between the two, which one would you pick?

Just another of the fake Christians who follow hate and bigotry instead of the teachings they claim.

These are becoming very prevalent, and every day, they move away from everything The Bible teaches in advancement of their own hate.

...and then they cry about their followers moving away from the Church.

I don't think Jesus was picky about the people he fed - - and I doubt that he knew less about human beings' sexual identities than God does. But God also inspires studies of the way things work - science. Neurobiology found distinct differences in people's neuro-biological development of their adult sexual expressions. It isn't a choice, it's been with us from the beginning of our existence - with some cultures readily adapting, and others rigidly clinging to outdated thinking about the realities of our own biology. If God made everyone here, who are we to judge how God sees them? We're told God is love. As a Jesus fan, I cannot imagine him starving poor people because he hated ANY donors' identities!

How ironic that his last name is Christian. Probably when Jesus passed out the loaves and the fishes he did not allow anyone to partake whose views he didn't agree with, right?

Whatever your beliefs or religion you go by pvone thing is always true. Your here to serve the people not your ego. God don't like ugly especially when your using him as a reason to not help some of his children cause of who they are and what they believe in. Food is food and it shouldn't matter who donated it or receives the food. Those in need should be your priority not your religion or ego for we are all God's children.

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” — Matthew 7:1

Before we throw stones at others, let us remember that judgment belongs to God.

Our calling is not to condemn but to love, to show mercy, and to help those in need. Jesus taught us that the greatest commandments are to love God and to love our neighbor.

Those who choose to donate are putting compassion into action. Rather than questioning their motives, perhaps each of us should ask ourselves:

What am I doing to help?

The world needs fewer critics and more servants, fewer accusations and more acts of kindness.

May our words bring healing instead of division, our hands bring hope instead of harm, and our hearts reflect the love that Christ showed to us all.

“Let all that you do be done in love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:14

May this message encourage others to replace judgment with compassion and to remember that love is the clearest reflection of faith.

        George,

When I used this same logic during a rant with my mentor pastor, his response was, "That sounds pretty judgemental to me." I never looked judgement the same way again. There is a difference between being judgemental and calling out injustice. We condemn every day. Otherwise everyone left to their own devices would be pure chaos. Calling out injustice and hypocracy for what they are is exactly what Jesus calls us to do. Let that quote from 1 Corinthians guide you. The way I see it, is that using a thinly veiled "religious" excuse of someone potentially using the money to promote or help something you don't believe to NOT accept help for the people Jesus explicitly calls you to help is an injustice wrapped in that thin veil of religion.

The Author of the book leviticus in the OLD testament is simply that, the author and he gives HIS opinion NOT GODS!! Let's face it, there are a lot of preachers out there that are obsessed with the notion that the Bible was written by Angels or even God him/herself... I know that I bring Sad news to you, MAN WROTE THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE... Inspired? Maybe... But certainly with Man's own opinions and attitudes of the day!! As scholors have opined, Leviticus warned us against "Child Preditors" NOT Gay men and women, because it was an accepted practice in those days by most of the Gentiles and the Romans and Greeks. Jesus and Father God NEVER said or made a Commandment against Gays and the Gay lifestyle!! Sorry to burst your little hateful balloon but, it is what it is..... His refusing food from those companies that support LGBTQ programs is BIGOTRY and HATE plain and simple.... Not anything to do with being a true follower of Christ.....

        Bridget,

I just had an epiphany when I read what you wrote. Perhaps the real problem is that the food supplier/donor provides enough, he would feel compelled to include them on his list of donors in his annual report/ 990 filings, and on his website, acknowledging that some of his sources also help the LGBTQIA++ community. That would destroy his perfect image of being a homophobe.

        1. Rev. Lindsay's Avatar Rev. Lindsay

In reality to a minister there's no such thing as a homophobe. I don't believe anyone could have such a phobia of someone gay but it's your excuse for gays being disliked in reality.

            Rev. Lindsay,

According to Webster's dictionary, homophobia is: discrimination against, aversion to, or fear of homosexuality or gay people. So, if, to a minister there is "no such thing as a homophobe," what would you call someone who discriminates against, has an aversion to or is afraid of homosexuality or gay people? BTW, Webster does NOT give an exemption of this definition to ministers like you did.

How can hate and discrimination ever be a good thing? It can’t. I believe if this preacher truly wanted to help the needy, it wouldn’t matter where donations came from, so long as they come. I bet he would take donations from a biker gang. I bet he would take donations from crooked politicians or corporations without ever blinking an eye as to how they came to be in possession of these items, or who got hurt in the process. Discrimination against anyone and hatred towards any group is never justified.

Merle A Clark, you are pulling things from The Old Testament...the same books where you tend to ignore the things you find inconvenient. Would that rejection of Leviticus somehow supersede James: 2" My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?"

Oh, I know how the new covenants change the restrictions in The Bible...isn't it convenient that those come along just when needed to justify what Christians want to do? I understand there is a new one coming where Christians won't have to follow "Woke Jesus" anymore!

What does Leviticus 18 : 22 have to do at all with feeding the hungry. He's denying to take or buy food from Feeding America because they also provide food to the LGBTQ+ community. Nothing in Leviticus says anything about not accepting food from someone who, by your belief, is a sinner.

      1. Ari Joseph Bertine's Avatar Ari Joseph Bertine

But there are explicit rules in Leviticus about what exactly to do when there are poor folks in your community. Ultimately, ALL food comes from God, even when they are distributed by those you call "alphabet people." It is highly possible that some of Jesus' helpers who carried the baskets and helped clean up were "alphabet people." That was the tradition of the time. Every able bodied person pitched in to help. Somewhere along the line, society has lost that concept.

It also doesn't say where the loaves and fishes came from, only that there were a few baskets, that fed the whole crowd, with enough crumbs and pieces of fish left over to fill several of them.

No one spoke as to the source of the food shared. No one demanded ID, registration, an exam to test one's beliefs, a declaration of one's preferred proclivities, or anything else. Or, perhaps the early church found it unimportant and removed it from the books now accepted as part of the bible.

Yea, Really funny stuff. Even for you.

If you were hungry and hadn't eaten in a week, and were offered a food basket with Joe Biden's face on it, or a label stating it was donated by the DNC or some left-leaning organization, would you refuse to take it or eat it? Hunger is not something to politicize. If you're saying that ONLY hungry MAGAts would take and eat a box of food donated by a Republican source, your mind has truly twisted. Hunger is hunger, and the only way to fix it is to eat. Regardless of the source. We're not talking about people who are simply looking for a free meal, because most of us will accept one even when we aren't hungry. We're talking about hungry people with children to feed, so I suggest you have that high horse get on its knees.

        1. ServantOfJudgement's Avatar ServantOfJudgement

Patricia, I would thank God for the food Biden stole the money from the people to pay for the free food the people he took the money from needed to stay alive.

I'm not talking about a starving man refusing food from trump. I'm talking about someone not starving running a food pantry like Alvin Christian.

There are people here and everywhere that would not accept food from trump to feed the hungry unless they themselves were starving.

It's those who judge in hypocrisy I'm speaking of.

You make even less sense here than with your first comment, unless you're saying that it is up to the starving people to feed themselves. What a food pantry does, is take or buy food (through donations) from people who have more than enough to distribute to those who are hungry. It seems like you have never heard of one or been to one. You might try volunteering. It can be a life-changing experience.

Patricia, my apologies. Sometimes my sarcasm is so deep even I have a hard time sorting it out.

Was a joke about government taxing us so much that we can't afford our own food so we need government assistance. Quasi joke I suppose cause it happens.

You're always polite and deserve better than sarcasm from me.

I give to homeless people I encounter on the street even if I think they're scamming. Once I offered my carryout food I just picked up to a begger and he got furious. Screamed 'i don't want your effing food!'. He was chasing meth. I've gone hungry myself and it's nothing to joke about. It's terrible.

Still, this man is running his pantry his way according to his belief. He's feeding people. That good right? Better than I'm doing.

I do not "think either everyone loves you or hats you," but it is clear you hate the fact that some people are homosexual or transgender. You actively reject the scientific studies that confirm the biological connections to one's sexual preferences and gender identity. These aren't things you have control over, it's just how your body is. My suspicions are that at least 90 percent of people who tithe, will deduct it from their income taxes. Would you allow an LGBTQIA++ person into your church? How would you know? Many of them are still in the closet because of the attitudes you display. I thank God every day that the churches I am affiliated with are all open and affirming to the LGBTQIA++ community, and none of their members in that category are sexual deviants. Because “God’s will” is synonymous with “Nature’s will” (the only provable God is Nature) and the only clearly identifiable will of Nature is evolution (and evolution explains how Nature is constantly in a state of flux) — “survival of the fittest” should be classified as a type of thermodynamics. As humans evolved — they began to interfere with Nature, thereby modifying what Nature gave us, and sometimes began feeding those unable to do so for themselves. The Golden Rule is a modification of Nature — and is the most widely used example why in many instances, “Mother (or, father) Nature needs a helping hand.” Rolling Stones, 1972
