Joe Rogan was about 14 minutes into his latest Bible lesson when his guest pulled out an unusual gift: a replica of a 2,800-year-old piece of pottery that appeared to suggest the God of the Bible once had a wife.
Rogan was fascinated.
The ancient inscription mentions Yahweh, the God of Israel, alongside a mysterious figure called Asherah. Some scholars believe it offers evidence that early Israelites worshipped a goddess alongside the deity who would eventually become the one God of Judaism and Christianity.
This was hardly the only surprise awaiting Rogan during his October 7 episode with biblical scholar Dan McClellan. Rogan's show is frequently ranked as the most-listened-to podcast across the English-speaking world, a unique platform for Bible Study.
During the conversation, they explored evidence that familiar Bible stories borrowed from older religions, that some New Testament letters weren't written by their supposed authors, and that Christianity's teachings about marriage and hell changed over time.
"I don't think all of it is fiction, but I don't think all of it is literal," Rogan observed.
Millions of listeners tuned in to receive a crash course in biblical history from the former Fear Factor host that might make their Sunday school teachers uncomfortable.
Wait, God Has a Wife?
The pottery was discovered at Kuntillet Ajrud, an archaeological site in the Sinai Peninsula, and dates to approximately 800 BCE. Its inscription invokes Yahweh and "his Asherah." Nearby are drawings of figures that some researchers have associated with ancient deities.
Asherah was a goddess worshipped in the ancient Near East. In Canaanite religion, she was the consort of El, the chief god. As ancient Israelite religion developed, Yahweh came to occupy El's supreme position, and some scholars believe Asherah was worshipped as Yahweh's partner by at least some Israelites.
That sounds pretty incompatible with modern Judaism and Christianity, which teach that God is one and has no divine wife. But ancient Israelite religion wasn't always monotheistic in the way we understand it today.
The Bible repeatedly condemns Israelites for worshipping other gods. In 2 Kings 23, King Josiah orders an image of Asherah removed from the Temple in Jerusalem.
There is a catch: scholars disagree about the inscription. "His Asherah" might refer to a goddess or a sacred object associated with her worship. The drawings may not even represent Yahweh and Asherah.
Did the Bible Borrow Its Stories From Other Religions?
Rogan was particularly interested in the similarities between biblical narratives and older stories from the ancient world.
Consider Moses. According to Exodus, his mother places him in a waterproof basket on the Nile to save him from Pharaoh's order to kill Hebrew baby boys. Pharaoh's daughter discovers him and raises him in the royal household.
A strikingly similar Mesopotamian legend tells of Sargon of Akkad, a ruler who lived in the third millennium BCE. His mother secretly gives birth, places him in a basket sealed with bitumen, and sends him down a river. He is rescued and eventually becomes king. Sound familiar?
The surviving Sargon birth legend was written down long after the king lived, so the exact relationship between the accounts remains uncertain. But the parallels are difficult to miss.
Then there's Noah's Ark. In Genesis, God sends a devastating flood. Noah builds a boat, saves his family and animals, survives the waters, and offers a sacrifice.
But in the older Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, a man named Utnapishtim also receives warning of a divine flood, builds a boat, preserves life, survives, and offers a sacrifice. He even sends out birds to see whether the waters have receded. The British Museum preserves ancient clay tablets containing the Mesopotamian story, which circulated long before the Hebrew Bible reached its final form.
To modern readers, these similarities can look suspiciously like plagiarism. But ancient writers routinely adapted familiar stories to express new religious ideas. Biblical authors could have used existing narratives to communicate their own understanding of God.
That doesn't mean biblical authors simply copied the work of other peoples, or that a familiar story has no spiritual meaning. It does complicate the idea that these narratives emerged independently of the cultures surrounding their authors.
Did Paul Really Write All Those Rules About Sex and Marriage?
One might call the Apostle Paul the original manosphere podcaster... after all, he was an unmarried man with very strong opinions and no qualms about sharing them. His letters were partly an exercise in long-distance problem-solving: congregations he had helped establish sent him questions, reports of disputes reached him, and he responded with instructions on everything from worship to marriage. Some of the advice was requested. Other times, he could sound like quite the busybody.
And of course, sex. Paul was hardly a live-and-let-live kind of guy when it came to coitus; he had plenty of opinions about what Christians should and shouldn't do in the bedroom. His writings have influenced Christian teachings about sexuality and gender roles for nearly two thousand years.
But what if some of those instructions weren't actually written by Paul?
Scholars generally accept seven New Testament letters as authentically Pauline. Many believe three others, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus, were written by later Christians using his name. These are called the Pastoral Epistles because they address church leadership.
In 1 Corinthians 7, which scholars agree Paul wrote, he favors remaining unmarried and celibate, partly because he expects the world to end soon. Why arrange marriages and establish families when Jesus is coming back any minute now?
Paul's sundial may have been running fast...
His guidance presented a problem for later Christians still stranded on Earth. How could they establish families, leadership, and lasting institutions when the end hadn't arrived?
Suddenly, the instructions attributed to Paul began to look rather different.
In 1 Timothy 2, women are instructed not to teach or exercise authority over men. Verse 15 states that a woman will be saved through childbearing, provided she continues in faith and holiness. That's a striking contrast with Paul's preference for celibacy in 1 Corinthians, and with the participation of women mentioned in his undisputed letters. McClellan suggested the shift reflects Christianity's adaptation to the delayed Second Coming.
Traditional Christian scholars dispute the claim that Paul didn't write these letters, but their contested authorship presents an awkward question for those invoking them as timeless rules about marriage and gender. How timeless are rules that may have changed with the circumstances?
Did Jesus Really Teach That Everyone Else Goes to Hell?
Rogan also expressed discomfort with the idea that otherwise decent people could suffer eternal punishment simply because they don't believe in Jesus.
McClellan explained that the Bible offers differing ideas about punishment after death: destruction, punishment that some interpret as temporary, and passages traditionally understood to describe eternal suffering. The hell familiar to modern Christians developed through centuries of interpretation.
We've previously explored the surprisingly complicated biblical history of hell, including Sheol, Gehenna, and later Christian understandings of eternal punishment.
For Rogan, the question was simple: what kind of God would condemn someone forever for believing the wrong thing?
Is the Manosphere Ready for This Version of the Bible?
Rogan's interest in scripture arrives as Christianity gains traction among some male-oriented podcasters and online influencers. The controversial podcaster Jordan Peterson interprets biblical stories through psychology and mythology, while others promote Christianity as a defense of traditional masculinity and family hierarchies.
Rogan himself said in 2025 that he'd begun attending church. That January, he hosted Christian apologist Wesley Huff, who defended the Bible's historical reliability. Christianity Today reported that Huff's audience surged afterward, with listeners saying they'd started reading scripture or going to church.
Are young men actually becoming more religious? Gallup found that 42% of American men ages 18 to 29 considered religion very important in 2024–2025, up from 28% in 2022–2023. Monthly religious attendance among young men reached 40%. But Pew's December 2025 research found no clear evidence of a nationwide revival among young adults. And neither survey tells us whether podcasts are sending men into the pews.
Some figures take the connection between Christianity and masculine authority considerably further. In September, Religion News Service reported on a fringe group of Reformed Christian influencers - sometimes called "Theo-bros" promoting patriarchy, antisemitism, and even racial segregation under a religious banner. They aren't representative of Rogan's guests, but they're part of a wider online fight over who gets to define Christian manhood.
Take Arizona pastor Dale Partridge, who preaches what he calls "biblical patriarchy." He argues that husbands should represent their households before God, church, and state, and has called for repealing women's right to vote. Fellow Christian nationalist Joel Webbon has said his wife votes the way he tells her to because she's submissive. Both appeal to a biblical order in which men lead their families. But that's quite a leap from ancient instructions about marriage to deciding that women shouldn't have an independent voice in a modern democracy.
And it's a rather selective reading of scripture. Ephesians 5 tells wives to submit to their husbands, but the preceding verse calls on believers to submit to one another, and the passage instructs husbands to love their wives sacrificially. Meanwhile, in Romans 16, a letter scholars agree Paul actually wrote, he praises Phoebe as a minister and names Junia as prominent among the apostles. Christians disagree about what these passages mean for gender roles today, but they certainly complicate the idea that the Bible provides an unambiguous mandate for male domination.
It is one thing to declare that the Bible says men should lead and women should follow. It is another to discover that the relevant books may have been written by different people, in different centuries, responding to problems their predecessors never imagined.
A podcaster can make a confident claim about what God wants from men and women. A biblical scholar can spend three hours explaining why the evidence isn't so tidy.
If the manosphere is so interested in what the Bible has to say about men and women, is it really searching for divine truth, or just looking for a few convenient verses to tell women what to do?

For the Manosphere/Patriarchy/Abrahamic faiths to endure as a system of power, it must perpetually cultivate a specific set of negative actions and attitudes. These are not accidental byproducts; they are the essential mechanisms of its survival.
Systematic Diminishment of Female Value: The Patriarchy cannot function if women are seen as equals. Therefore, it must constantly devalue feminine attributes, labor, and intellect. It does this by branding female emotion as "hysteria," female ambition as "aggression," and female leadership as "unnatural." The work of women, particularly in the home, is rendered invisible and uncompensated, creating a state of perpetual economic dependence that is a powerful chain.
The Enforcement of a Rigid, Punishing Masculinity: The "little brother" of toxic masculinity is the Patriarchy's primary enforcement arm. It demands that men suppress their empathy, vulnerability, and sorrow, branding these as weaknesses. It pressures them into a state of constant competition, where worth is measured by dominance, wealth, and sexual conquest. This creates men who are emotionally stunted and isolated, making them ideal soldiers for the system but miserable as human beings. Any man who deviates from this narrow ideal is immediately policed and shamed by his peers, acting as a self-policing guard for the entire structure.
The Glorification of Violence and Control: The Patriarchy equates masculinity with power and power with the capacity for violence. It lionizes the warrior, the conqueror, the aggressive businessman who "wins at all costs." This attitude makes control a virtue. It teaches that to be a man is to control your wife, your children, your subordinates, and your own emotions. This creates a hierarchy where the threat of force is the ultimate arbiter of disputes, ensuring the strong remain on top.
The Erasure of Alternatives and History: The Patriarchy survives by convincing people it is the only natural way to live. To do this, it must systematically erase or rewrite history to erase any evidence of matriarchal societies, gender-nonconforming individuals, or female leaders. As the article you provided hints at, these stories are buried or re-framed as anomalies or sins. By controlling the narrative of the past, it controls the possibilities of the future.
The Weaponization of Family and Tradition: The family unit is not a sanctuary in the Patriarchy; it is a factory for producing its next generation of subjects. "Tradition" is the shield used to justify harmful practices. The phrase "that's how it's always been" is a command to cease questioning. It uses the sacred bond of family to enforce its rules, making fathers the kings of their small castles and mothers the enforcers of their own subjugation, ensuring the values are passed down without the need for a formal state police force.
The Promotion of Scarcity and Competition: A united populace is a threat. The Patriarchy thrives on division. It fosters a mindset of scarcity—there are only so many places at the table, so much respect to go around, so much power to be had. By pitting men against women, and men against each other, it ensures they are too busy fighting over scraps to ever unite and challenge the hand that feeds them. It makes them see each other as rivals for a fixed prize, rather than allies against an unjust system.
These actions and attitudes are the lifeblood of the Patriarchy. They are the daily, grinding gears of the machine, designed to break the human spirit and refashion it into a shape that serves the preservation of power.

Growing up in the Catholic faith, I Always attributed the feminine gender to the Holy Spirit. And after first reading the Pistis Sophia about 12 years ago, I felt even more strongly, that Peter, because of the bad vibes he had toward Mary Magdalene and women in general, probably felt it necessary to disguise the feminine aspect of God. And hence called it the Holy Ghost!

2 Kings 23. King Josiah was the one who was consolidating nations together, and that was easier to do with a single god. He ordered that Asherah be removed from all temples, where she had previously been placed alongside Yahweh as his wife, and from that time forward Yahweh was considered single. There is no record of anyone receiving a message to do so, this was Josiah's decision alone, but of course he claimed that he was doing God's will and no one could argue with him because he'd just kill them if they did, so that's how it went. Josiah broke up God's marriage and killed his wife to make it easier for him to rule a much larger territory, and honestly, that's pretty much religion and politics in a nutshell; political motive is always the reason behind any major religious change, like what's going on in the USA today.

When the manosphere claims “the Bible says men should lead and women should follow,” it’s ignoring how complex those texts really are. Those passages were written by different authors, in different centuries, responding to their own cultural problems — not laying out a timeless rule for modern relationships. A podcaster can make a bold claim in five minutes. A scholar can spend hours showing why the evidence isn’t nearly that simple.
If the manosphere were truly searching for divine truth, it would embrace that complexity. Instead, it reaches for a few convenient verses — not to uplift anyone, but to control women.
And that’s the real issue. The question isn’t what the Bible says about men and women. It’s why certain people only quote the parts that keep women small.

REALLY entertaining to read the ... not so much the wannabe funny messages, but the ones trying to be serious.
Even pretty committed Biblical folks I'm listening to are saying that if the Pentateuch existed, it was ignored until AT LEAST 500 BCE and not really paid much attention to by anyone until sometime between 150 BC and 250 BC. Authorship seems most agreed to have been creative, playing off of Mesopotamian scripts.
Then we get sixty seconds post-Jesus (and pretty credible folks even challenge his existence, and/or his teachings and/or a cruciifixion--one even sees, with a reasonable prompt from historical findings, Jesus and his followers as assasssins going to Jewish celebrations and taking out Roman officials.
We appear to have far less respectable and far less reliable reports from adjacent materials regarding Old and New Testament literature. From Jesus' death until Irinaeus and others a couple hundred years later, there is no respectable guesstimate as to how many belief systems tried to line up behind Jesus... Gnostics of many flavors and those who became the proto-orthodox, at least. And the proto-orthodox weren't even all that well in agreement. But we have a fairly decent grip on dates and beliefs out of Mesopotamia.
Me, I'm kinda Gnostic and really Hermeticist, and interested in 'spiritual technology' from wherever wisdom comes... and Hermeticism holds the law of gender. GENDER, not sex. Something initiates and something builds/manufactures from the origination plan, and that is, respectively, the male and female genders in Hermetic mindset, ... simplified.
So yeah, how many ways can these conceptions (haha, pun intended) be relatively accurately presented, and still look drastically different when compared thousands of years later?

The Pentatuch (the Books of Moses, aka The Torah) was likely oral tradition, and not put to writing until the Babylonian Captivity period to preserve their religion. At the time of Moses, Hebrew, as an established language, really didn't exist, and definitely didn't have a narrative form until around the 10th or 9th Century BCE. As both Northern and Southern Canaanite peoples had a slightly different approach to things, when the Scribes assembled to write down the "books" this is why, especially in Genesis, there are some contradictions. Both had the stories, but each had a version that differed slightly from others. So, pretty much everything from Genesis through Chronicles were not put to writing until after the destruction of Solomon's temple and before the return under the Persian approval.

God is God, and we really don't have any idea what that is. We have faith that God exists, and we have been told that we were made in His image, but don't really know what that image is. Genders are designed for procreation. What need does God have of a gender?
Humans designed the images and wrote the rules for religion. Study the 10 Commandments. God commands us to love Him and love each other, but man took those Commandments and wrote the first 660 laws, designed to control the masses.
God is simple and powerful. If we spend our time loving Him and each other without judgement, we don't need to worry about what anyone else (including Him) is doing.

Just like any gas, we know what air is. We can actually measure its composition using a gas analyzer. It actually has physical characteristics comprising of Oxygen and Hydrogen. Faith isn’t like that as you have postulated it is. We confidently take a breath because we can, but only when air is present. When air isn’t present, like in a vacuum, we cannot take a breath because there is nothing to breathe in.
The wind (a volume of fast flowing atoms of Oxygen and Hydrogen) might be invisible to us, but we can measure it’s actually there, and we can also see the “physical” result of its presence as that gaseous flow hits leaves on a tree.
Faith has no “physical characteristics”, it’s purely a mind event. It’s that same mind event that has people believing in The Book of Mormon, or the Vedas, or the Quran, or the Bhagavad Gita, or even Fairies, or the Loch Ness Monster. All of those adherents are using their own “faith” (mindset) to hang on to what they believe is their truth..
I have “faith” that my football (soccer) team in England is going to do really well this year. Sadly, my faith is now taking a huge dip as my team is really struggling. 🤭

I hope you find God and your faith in Him again. Hard, scientific facts can't prove the Father exists. Your mind needs to be open to spiritual evidence of His blessings. Childlike faith requires you to simply believe with or without hard evidence. That takes courage and suspension of cynicism.
I once told my daughter that we can't always answer a question about God because we are human, not God.
I pray you find your faith.

I’ve been where you are, I’ve preached “faith” from the pulpit, and I have baptized those that wanted it, and then I came to realize that I was pushing into peoples heads stories and illogical fantasies that they wanted to hear that had no basis on reality. Those stories and fantasies were no different to the stories and fantasies being pushed into Islamists heads, or Mormons heads, or Hindu believers heads. It’s just that those stories and fantasies in those other peoples heads are changed to suit their belief structure to enable them to accept it. All of them walking around saying, “my belief and faith is the right one”. Can you honestly not see that?
Thank you for your concern hoping I “find faith”. I will never ever again base my life only on the fickle structure of faith. I’ve seen what that can do, and it’s frightening. People have killed, and have been killed, due to that ridiculous philosophy. I know that many cannot see that, but all I can do is hope that many eventually understand the importance of clear thought using logic, reason, and critical thinking.

Sir, I'm so sorry you feel that way. I can't imagine the pain that caused one of God's ministers to turn away.
Yes, I do see the manmade rules and stories in the Bible, but in realizing they are written by man, I looked at the 10 Commandments given to us by God and found guidance there.
The most important of God's rules are: 1. Love Him above all others, 2. Love each other. All the rest of the Commandments fall into place and make sense if you remember those two rules as you study them.
I still pray you will find your faith again, and the simplicity to believe.

There was actually no pain at all in my turning away from what I realized I had been indoctrinated to believe, and in fact it was extremely freeing to know I could actually be myself at last.
As for the 10 commandments, it’s a very interesting story with no factual evidence whatsoever, and in fact there is still no historical/archaeological evidence that Moses ever existed. The same actually goes for Abraham. Obviously the Adam and Eve story is a fallacy with the scientific knowledge we now have from the study of genetics, and now of course the geological evidence available to us from studies of the earth, but it’s amazing how long those stories have lasted as being true, isn’t it?
As for loving that deity as being Rule #1, I find that to be extremely narcissistic especially knowing there was a mythical story of it drowning nearly everyone on the face of the planet, which would have included babies and children. Thank goodness there is no factual evidence of truth to that story.
I’m in total agreement though to us all loving each other. That moral is a bit of a no-brainer, right?
I will never again just blindly rely on faith anymore. Too many people do that which causes them to just live blindly accepting what they have been told with no demonstrable evidence of reality, but thank you for your kind thoughts anyway.

One thing I did learn as a Minister, Robert was civility, and the ability to be calm and collected, especially when being confronted with those who are obviously struggling in some way.

God having a wife implies that like the Greek and Roman gods before them, they had genders.
As far as the Jesus / Hell connection, it is important to remember that the bible's authors all lived after Jesus. Given how incomplete records were at the time, and given that there were decisions made about which were the canonical texts, that question becomes nearly impossible to answer.
If I told you what happened 100 years ago using today's technology, the facts and what they mean could still be disputed. Once you remove the kind of details we have available now, it becomes nearly impossible.
We don't know what Jesus taught. We know what people who lived long after he died say that he taught.
Given how Christianity evolved into many different sects that don't agree on many basic facts, there is no reason to believe that we know with certainty what Jesus taught. We don't even know if he repudiated Judaism. It is doubtful.

Yep. The god of the Hebrews started out as a deity in the Canaanite pantheon. With a consort. True monotheism never existed until after the Babylonian Exile. The god Christians worship in the modern era is a reimagined pagan deity. Who is quite different even from the Old Testament god. A couple big differences being that OT God wasn't a tri-omni deity and was really ONLY the god of the Jews. The God concept keeps evolving over time.

Most people look at God as being a singular deity, but it's not a stretch to think he may have had a wife. (Caveat: that is if you believe God is man or father figure.) For some, Mother Mary was somewhat on par with Jesus in the spiritual world.
As always, in Biblical study and education, we lack the physical facts, and have to rely on interpretation and perception of what has been found.

It's called Divine Revelation, and I believe that God can present the same story mulitiple times to multiple people, and they each tell the final story differently. Kinda like the family reunion, where everybody remembers a significant event in the family's history differently.
