Does a baptism count if it’s a cynical attempt to win back public favor? How can you determine the authenticity of someone's motives?
Those are the questions roiling the faith community after a series of high profile baptisms by controversial figures, including prominent sex workers and celebrities accused of wrongdoing.
Critics argue baptism is becoming part of a PR strategy; after receiving negative publicity, people are finding a minister, a camera crew, and a pool in an attempt to remake their image.
But others insist it's not up to the public to pass that kind of judgment.
So, are these controversial public baptisms sincere? And does it actually matter?
Taking the Plunge
Porn star and OnlyFans model Lily Phillips is the most recent public figure to take the plunge after a series of negative headlines. Phillips, who is perhaps most famous for sleeping with over 1,000 men in 12 hours, shared footage of her baptism on Instagram to her thousands of followers, calling it “a day to remember forever.”
“I think for a while I’d kind of deviated from religion, and I think I was kind of in denial for a lot of it,” Phillips explained of her newfound faith.
“Quite a big thing happened more in my personal life, where I kind of felt the need to start speaking to God again. I hadn’t really practiced faith for a while. I just wanted to get rebaptized to kind of reinstate my relationship with God.”
Reactions were mixed amongst Christians. Some urged embracing Phillips, insisting that any move to give one's life to God should be celebrated. No matter the person's backstory, baptism is cause for celebration, they feel.
“Whoever hasn’t sinned should throw the first stone, otherwise, we should be GLAD she’s coming closer to God, one step at a time,” said one Instagram user.
Another supporter wrote on X: "Are some sins TOO sordid to be forgiven? 'X' says 'yes'. The Bible says otherwise. Thank God."
However, others doubted the sincerity of a baptism for a woman who they say has such a questionable moral character.
“Thats not how this works, “ wrote another commenter, reacting to Phillips' newfound faith.
Another person wrote:
"I find this contradictory. One cannot be a "friend of the world" or continue in a "practice of sin" (like the adult industry) while claiming to be a servant of God. True repentance would require a complete "turning around" from such a profession."
Russell Brand Remakes His Image
Phillips' story is drawing strong reactions, but she's not the only public figure to announce a controversial baptism.
In 2024, comedian Russell Brand posted images of himself getting baptized following public announcements he was converting to Christianity.
The issue? Brand’s baptism was hot on the heels of sexual assault allegations that threatened to derail his career.
Following his public conversion, Brand has found new life as a political influencer, often framing his faith as central to his personal and ideological transformation.
His story is far from over, however. Last month, the Crown Prosecution Service announced two new charges against Brand, including one count of rape. He is due to face trial later this year.
Sacrament or Strategy?
Baptism, in Christian theology, is meant to be a deeply personal act, an outward sign of inward repentance. But when that act is performed publicly, amplified through social media, and timed alongside reputational crises, it naturally raises some questions.
Many were eager to welcome Phillips and Brand into the Christian fold, arguing that faith is deeply personal and that Christians shouldn’t judge the sincerity of others' intentions.
But others say that finding Jesus conveniently opens doors for public figures in search of a new audience – or to "remake" their reputation in the eyes of the public. As Christian influencer Jon Root put it, “Christianity has become a grift for many to elevate their brand a lot lately."
The truth may be impossible to measure from the outside. In an era of celebrities, influencers, and public figures all seeking the spotlight, believers are left to ask not only what baptism means, but who gets to decide when it’s sincere.
What are your thoughts?

God can forgive anything to anyone. It depends on the heart, sincerity and intention.
Asking for forgiveness should preferably be private, in private and sincere communion with God. And the asking for forgiveness should be followed by action (not continuing in the sin wanting to be forgiven). If the act is done as a PR stunt, it will be that and nothing more. All thanks are due to the most compassionate and most merciful creator of the Universe, he who gave us life when we were dead, who will let us taste death, again, before giving us eternal life. Amen.-
Compassionate and merciful? Think again! If you believe it exists It also gave us wars, diseases, pestilence, storms, floods, earthquakes, volcanoes, fires, tsunamis, Trump, and any other bad things you can imagine!
-
What about going to those we also offended/harmed for forgiveness. It's easy to go to some unseen being for forgiveness and not experience any concrete accountability or consequences. Our individualistic (and dare say narcissistic) American ethos supports a "me & Jesus" spirituality, while society at large does impose consequences. And as Geoffrey notes, wars, diseases, pestilence, human created floods, earthquakes, fires, tsunamis, Project 2025 etc., come out of religious righteousness where harmful behavior is justified. I invite to listen to Joan Baez's song, "With God On Our Side" (you can find it on YouTube)

"Increasingly, controversial figures accused of wrongdoing or embroiled in scandal suddenly “find Jesus” and get baptized."
Did I miss something new here? And who cares?
I'm still having flashbacks of Tammy Faye Baker's mascara running down her face while her husband Jim groveled for public absolution for ... way less than certain very recently elected and/or appointed federal administrators have done.
Why focus on these sex workers when there is more cream rising to the top?
Peace, Out... tk

Well let's go into the history that scripture offers us on those who falsely proclaim ministry and blessings falsely in God's name. The first one we don't hear much about are the fallen angels who had children with the mortal women. At one point the angelic parents got together and swore an oath, a pact, on God's name to stand by their decision because they planned on falling in love with those mortal women and therefore ensuring that it was of God's grace, for God did create mankind out of love and if they loved them then it would be blessed by God's presence for God encompasses love. This occurred upon one of the seventh days when God would leave creation to rest. He was angry for many things when he returned. The children were deemed abominations because their free will as being half human and the power of an angel in a frail human form that has its moments of weakness in emotional turmoil and anger, could endanger his creation. A chance he did not want to risk. When he discovered the oath that those angels had taken in his name, even though they claimed it would be out of love but their true ambition was prideful They wanted to impress God with their ingenuity. The fact that they didn't see this and illusioned themselves with their oath was a show to God that they had already fallen to become consumed by sin as it tainted their ability to see their own sin. They were cast from heaven into exile on earth, without physical form, to wander as lost spirits or ghosts basically.
Another example is the ark of the covenant. Each time Israel would fall victim to convincing themselves and others not to obey the commands of God and take spoils of plunder for themselves, then the ark and the very blessings of God would leave Israel and they would suffer under the thumb of tyranny and oppression until the ark returned.
So those are the scriptures but what about actual accounts people have witnessed. I myself watched a woman who had been shown a miracle by God not for the sake of winning her faith he said but for her to put down her anger and see him with an open mind. 2 days later she was hospitalized for an ovarian cyst and the drain tube punctured her artery. After 2 pints of a blood transfusion the doctors proclaimed her a medical miracle. The diabetes she had her entire life was gone, somehow cured. Later she ridiculed the experience out of spite against her ex-husband who still strongly believed. A month later, like a thief in the night, her diabetes was back even worse and neuropathy had taken all her toes from both feet. My point, do not blaspheme the spirit or the name of God. Do not preach falsely in God's name, his harshest wrath has come down upon those who did. I've seen it and read about it. So do not concern yourselves with those who do but instead offer a silent prayer for them for they know not what they do.

Nonsense!
-
-
All I can say is I hope it is not something fake, but that these people indeed found salvation, repented of their sins and are indeed starting a new walk with Christ and have shed their former lifestyle.
-
Judge not, that ye be not judged. (Matt. 7:1) No one can truly know the heart and thoughts of another person, so leave the judgment to God.
-
Do I care that someone is or isn't (baptized, Christian, Zoroastraian, black, gay, straight, cis ... whatever)?
No, it doesn't assist in assessing whether they're good or bad, guilty or innocent, anything. I reject rule and rulers and those who demand to be ruled, especially the latter when they insist I (or anyone or everyone) should demand the rule that they demand.
It just stuns me that anyone would take it as indicative about a person when they do what Jesus criticized: doing their alms in public.
Know thyself! That's quite plenty to kerp a person busy for eternity. Get on it.
-
what ever floats her boat, dont really care if she is sincere or not, its irrelevant to me and my faith, in the end everything within christianity is just a control mechanism. there are no converts we seek no one out to belong i am happy to only have six other's who are initiates with me as within how i practice and was taught trained within Witchcraft, we are all priest/ess of the craft of the wise. while yes i do hold open classes, informationals and public talks, as well to doing community work and sacredotal rites for the community at large when called upon. i wouldnt and dont want the general public to be converted to my practice as it is only meant for the few.
-
I just want to ask. Did not Jesus say, "Ye without sin cast the first stone." Salvation comes with repentance of our sins. Stop judging.
-
He said, “Judge not, that ye be not judged” (Matthew 7:1)—and that word cuts deep against the hypocrite, the finger-pointer who carries a plank in his own eye while fussing over splinters in his brother’s. That’s the judgment of ego, the judgment of empire, the judgment that crucifies instead of heals. But right there in the same breath, same sermon, same holy fire—He turns and commands: “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16-20). Not by their titles. Not by their loud prayers on street corners. Not by the shine of their chariots or the size of their followers. By their FRUITS. The harvest tells the truth when the tongue lies.

Originally baptism was a rite of initiation into a faith community of believers and took place with the community present who gave assent to the individual's membership {this is still so in many Christian communities}. Since the time of Augustine of Hippo baptism into Christianity became more to stave off eternal punishment. In the time of Constantine it became a political move once Christianity became legitimized by the powers that be. Enter the Enlightenment and the continued deepening of the focus on self, an voila! here we are, Jesus as my personal savior, far from the Judeo communal ethos. So these current stories are nothing new. I think what would lend credence to an authentic "conversion" is what is this person doing now to build up the common good more than personal gain.
-
Would be her business if she hadn't taken the time to post and share with literally the most public audience in existence. She put herself in the position to be judged here just like when she slept with over 1,000 men and heavily/proudly advertised it. I see your point but it would be better applied under different circumstances. These days it pays and is far more relevant to be able to recognize manipulation than to follow an outdated man-made scripture on not judging others.
If you were to follow scripture however here is one that certainly applies to this situation:
Matthew 6:1−6
Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
-Influencers count, last time I checked.
-
Actions speak louder than words. The only way to know if someone is sincere is to see how they behave after they pledge themselves.
-
Which he holds upside down. The person has never stepped foot into a church to really worship,I saw one of his stunts when he went to a church sat in the front row playing with his " donation" and shoowing the bill amounts.

Liturgical Reflection: Waters of Return Offered in the spirit of the Salish Sea at first light, January 14, 2026 Rev. JT Sunrise · Celestial Nexus Church · Duwamish & Coast Salish ancestral lands The water receives her without asking for her résumé, without demanding she first erase every footprint behind her. We, the watchers on the shore, feel the old impulse rise: to weigh the sincerity, to time the gesture, to declare the heart’s motive as if we held the only compass that matters. God shaped the riverbeds and the veins beneath our skin sees what moves beneath the surface before the first breath breaks the mirror. Grace does not wait for the perfect apology. It rushes forward while the wanderer is still a long way off, while the scent of distant places still clings to the clothes. The apostles were not spotless when they answered the call. Peter swore he did not know the man. Paul carried letters of death before he carried the message of life. Mary Magdalene wept in the garden, and grace met her there, asking only, “Woman, why are you weeping?” The true measure is not the moment of immersion, but the slow, quiet turning that follows— choices made when the cameras are gone, mercies extended in the hidden hours, the softening of old patterns beneath persistent light. We are not asked to be judges of the heart. We are asked to be midwives of hope, to breathe with the one who labors toward new birth, to hold silence when certainty tempts us to speak condemnation. O River of endless mercy, Christ-Light that walks upon the waves, Wisdom woven through the roots of the elders, Breath that moves in every living thing— Hold this one gently in Your current. Let what needs washing be washed. Let what needs revealing rise to the surface in its own time. Let what is true be carried forward, step by unseen step. And may we who stand on the banks learn again the humility of not-knowing, the courage of hoping anyway, the quiet strength of celebrating every faltering step toward the Source. In the name of the One who is both the River and the Rain, the Beginning that waits in every ending, the Returning that never tires of welcoming home— Amen. So be it. Aho. 🌅🙏🕊️ The Sunrise is always arriving.

What on earth are you rattling on about? Sounds like mumbo jumbo!

Well i remember Jimmy Swaggart and his public "confession and never do it again baloney"! He was back at it no time! He's still on the airways! God knows when its real when you return to him and when you stray! So I put little belief in public displays of almost anything including "finding"God! He's never lost, you are!
-
Salvation, if there is a such a thing, comes from living a good life, not being watered and prayed over or professing some words about your savior.
-
Ephesians 2:8-9: Salvation is by God's unmerited favor (grace) received by faith, not by human effort or works. "Born Again" (evangelical) baptism does the trick! Saved!
-
-
Who are we to judge? Christ warned, judge not lest ye be judged. Like us all judgement is inevitable. Hopefully by then they will have confessed past sins and accepted Jesus and his power to forgive, past, present and future.
-
"Finding the Lord" works. Our Felon President even has his own Trump bible.

How badly is TDS affecting you right now? We want to be here for you as best we can. If it helps, I know of many more in your situation that actually cried when he won the election and it eats away at them daily. They find it very difficult to stay focused on any topic without referencing our overwhelmingly elected President. Anyway, try and hang in as best you can, only another 3 years (1000+ days) to go before another election. 🤗

Understanding that being a minister means you understand that this woman being baptized is God's plan, just like everything else that happens around you is also God's plan and it's not for you to judge as a minister or a regular citizen. Pray for her, then get in your knees and repent for the Lord's forgiveness for doughting his path. As Minsters, we are here to spread the love of Christ and the miracles he does every day just like this Baptism that may very well change this woman's life for the good, and that would be a MIRACLE.

I have no problem with a sincere conversion. Where I have a problem is folks who use "conversions" to elicit the "sympathy card". Oh, we cannot give this person the sentence called out for in the law because look! They have become a Christian! So they get a reduced sentence. Meanwhile, someone who's been a life-long church goer gets convicted for shoplifting and gets sentence to the maximum, even though an army of Ministers showed up to testify he stole baby formula so his granddaughter could be fed. What I call the five-year test is the best evidence. Look at what the person does five years after their conversion. A good example of this is Charles Coulson. He pled guilty to his part in Watergate, and was sentenced. His sentence was reduced because of his active involvement in Christian Ministry in prison. Yes, he did make a bunch of money writing and lecturing about his experience, but he also worked on prisoner rights - especially the right to access to religious counsel and the right to worship in the faith of their choice. So, I'm going to reserve judgement on Ms. Phillips. Her sincerity will not be put to the test.
-
I don't think it matters really, it is a personal choice; and frankly before God, baptism cannot be faked. From my experience baptism is a state of repentance, an acknowledgement of needing to be saved and turning away from sin and one’s former life bad deeds. And even myself after a sincere baptism, I still didn't get it right and it has taken a lifetime of God trying ever so hard to rebuild me and get me into his will. God knows when you hit that water whether you are genuine. Only he sees the hearts of men and women. We don't. And the proof is what happens after baptism in reality. Is one a true believer in Jesus? Is one following his teachings? Is one fully redeemed and changing into his likeness daily? If one proceeds with baptism but after decides to have 1500 men in 5 hours as indicated by this article, then probably one could view the baptism as slightly suspect. But I myself wasn't perfect after coming out of the waters of my baptism and it took a long while thereafter to get straightened out but my heart intentions were genuine.
So, maybe give the benefit of the doubt to this young lady and others like here. Its none of our business anyway, it’s between God and them. And if correction is needed then He, The Lord, will do it in time. I am reminded of John Newton the slave trader Captain back in the 18th century, and his deeds were historically bad, very bad. Yet the author of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ after his Christian conversion. Who are we to judge?
The Lord's peace to all true believers...

I have found throughout the years of being on this bulletin board that Satan has infiltrated this bulletin board most definitely
Instead of running your mouth and pointing your fingers and rolling your eyes and judging her remember that little thing in the Bible that said judge not least yee be judged? As a Christian you should be happy that she is changing her ways to come closer to the Lord. there are people who have done much worse instead you sit there and wave your finger like the Pharisees. You should be ashamed of yourself. Have you hardened your heart to assume that everything must be against Common Sense? how about using Occam's razor why not try using it . stop judging people what the hell is wrong with you?
-
I think you will find it’s more of an indoctrination ‘stunt’ to woo those in attendance. It’s no more sacred than any other religious practice that is claimed also to be sacred, such as bar mitzvah of the Jewish faith, or pilgrimage to Mecca by the Islamic faith, etc. All of them are basically just mumbo-jumbo by all those claiming to have the truth. Religion, is basically a mental disorder for those who have been convinced they need it, all of them claiming their religion is the right one.
🦁❤️
-
If one has a belief in something that brings one peace or hope, Lion, what's the problem?
Love is also intangible and abstract. Do you have that "mental disorder"?
-
Yes I agree, if it brings peace and hope, I’m good with it, as long as it doesn’t get out of hand forcing it on others like Islam of today wanting to kill infidels, or Christianity of the past with its cruelty if you didn’t comply.
🦁❤️
-
And my avoided question of love as another abstraction - any answer? Do you believe in it? Do you accept it without concrete proof?
-
It depends on the type of love you are referring to. Romantic love can bring peace and harmony. Love of food, and drink, can have its issues, as can love of a particular religion if it brings anger and discord to people or communities.

🤔 Even Trump could repent and forsake his wicked ways. 🤡

I seriously doubt that will ever happen. And if he does, it'll be so he can make a buck off it - like his "personally autographed" AMERICAN BIBLE.
-
COULD happen. WOULDN’T be sincere. WON’T happen if only because if that thing on his head. (Not advisable to imagine the pics.)
-
I understand Bill Clinton (Lewinsky affair) and Joe Biden (sniffer-in-chief), still haven’t repented yet, so what’s the hurry? 🤭
Sinning is a human construct anyway.
🦁❤️

You mean Bill Clinton and Joe Biden who regularly attend Church? Oh, and the hair Biden "sniffed" was his granddaughter's at her dad's funeral.
-
Probably the Bill Clinton who deposited his offering on Monica’s dress ??

What was Biden’s excuse for taking a shower with his daughter?
🦁❤️
-
Since when is it a crime to take a shower with your daughter? We can debate the appropriateness of doing so, but it's certainly not illegal, nor has Biden's daughter ever accused him of sexual assault/abuse. As someone who is constantly accusing people of TDS and openly praises the current president, you might want to address the numerous accusations of sexual impropriety committed by Trump, as well as the fact he was found civilly liable for sexually assaulting E. Jean Carroll.
You're trying to manufacture a Biden scandal but seem to have no cares about the accusations levied at Trump. Why the double standard?
-
-
-
-
-
It's not the act we should question - as these people may indeed have found faith, or found Christ.
What should be questioned is the premise of using their Baptism as a publicity 'stunt' or a video post. My church does not permit the recording of any Baptism, as it is a Sacred event, a covenant with God. See the difference?
-

Nehilum was a prophet through whom God spoke about this: if the Assyrians came to him, as they were the worst of the worst, he would accept them. Jonah was also familiar with this, as he didn't have God's heart in his ministry to the Assyrians. Today, we need to repent of all those who question these people's motives. 1 Corinthians 4:5 says, " Do not judge before its appointed time. Their lives are broken as yours is, so quit acting like you are holy. As pastors or priests, we are all filthy rags. We need to stop reading Jonah as a children's story and see it as a remarkable display of God's power.
-
Yes, of course! A perfect analogy! Anyone is free to have delusions. These people having very public baptisms, you spouting off nonsense about how ‘filthy rags’ need to believe that some guy named Jonah was literally swallowed by a whale.

Russell Brand is obviously milking it. Even a blind person can see that. He's only sorry he got caught. Now, the other one failed to follow through on what is she doing after the Baptism? Her quotes never state her career intentions and the criticism only assumes she is continuing as a porn star. So, if she is sincere more power to her if not I pray like me she is exposed to God enough to actually repent. Obviously no one understands whatsoever the meaning and purpose of Baptism. Although usually done in public it's a private matter between you and Our Father. So, if they are going into it with a prearranged camera crew then it's publicity they are after. If the images came from someone stalking the celebrity then their privacy is violated. People need to remember that the hand picked Apostles were Thieves, Murders, Dunkards, Adulterers, prostitutes, ECT. Paul the Christian's favorite Apostle was a Murderer, had sex with prostitutes and lying thief. He was a woman hater after conversation and had at least two children out of wedlock the Bible mentions. Jesus Christ said "if you commit the least of these sins you have violated them all." My prayers for them not my criticism. "We need to pray for the sinners and preach God's word to them not criticize and condemn them." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For those that never actually bother to hear the man preach.
-
Praying is a useless waste of time because it never works! If you want to do something that is good, instead of praying help a charity or do some social work!
-
In most traditions, the baptism is not private, it is a witnessing of "private" vows (in an adult baptism) or by proxy (for infant baptism) that the person accept Jesus as "Lord and Savior" (adult) or be raised in such a fashion that they can commit for themselves when they are "of age" (infant). It is witnessed by a community (church or family) that agrees to hold them up, guide them, and help them if they stumble in their journey. This is not the same as judging them about their sincerity for the rest of their lives.
Just so you know, Paul was not a "woman hater," as many have come to believe. He installed women as heads of many churches, but all anybody reads in the places where Paul admonished the women in one church for idol worship, and going against the way the church was set up to work, but that is a story for a different thread.
-
How do you know whether JC was a son of god and was a genuine prophet of alien (virgin!) birth or just another charlatan living on the goodwill of others like so many of that time? Provable evidence please! Just because it was written in ancient times doesn’t mean it’s anything more than fictional description and hearsay!
-
-
It’s no one else’s business. Why do the christian nationalists feel the need to slither out from under their icky sticky rocks and judge everyone? How evil, vile, and disgusting!
-
Let them. It is not my job to judge anyone's sincerity, motive, beliefs, etc.
-
Wrong, everyone has the right to judge beliefs particularly those based religious mumbo jumbo!
-
And Jesus said “Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Mathew 7:1 NIV
Just sayin'.
-
I don’t give a rats **** what a 2000+ year old uneducated Jewish prophet said then! Not applicable in the 21st century anymore than it was then!
-
What do you mean uneducated? He spent years learning at the Temple.
You give the impression that you're just anti-religion.
-
Correct! What did he learn at the temple other than religion? That sounds like very biased attitudes to everyday life and anything the temple didn’t preach! Religion has been the bane of humanity ever since prehistoric humans tried to answer questions that kept some in control over the ignorant masses! I repeat, all religions can’t be right so it’s better to believe that all are wrong and keep a completely open mind until there is provable scientific evidence of a god or gods! If that happens then I will join the believers, but until then…!
-
So why are you posting on a church sponsored board?
-
Are you not interested in any alternatives that are as equally valid as your claims?Because the church has forced itself into the lives of people over the centuries! Seems like you have been brainwashed into thinking there’s a supernatural god or gods controlling humanity with no evidence of its or their existence! By calling yourself “Brother” I assume you’re a Christian who believes Christianity is the only true religion! What about the millions who believe their religion is the only truth? They can’t all be right so it’s better to assume they’re all wrong!
-
-
-
Geoffrey C. Olive - "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
Applicable in the 21st century, no?
-
That can be applied to all religions or life in general! It’s not unique to religion!

Well it's kind of upsets me that the people on this bulletin board can't figure out that her salvation and what she is doing and why with the Lord is her business and no one else's go on there's nothing to see here
-
I fully agree. When one proclaims Jesus as a "personal" Lord and Savior (as is done in these rituals) it is just that: Personal, and nobody else's business. Where they go from the baptismal pool is their own journey. Unless you are invited to join them in the journey, it is best to stay out of it.

Let’s face reality, it’s really only a quick bath for those who have been indoctrinated to believe otherwise. It’s all part of the mental illness of religion. It’s actually quite sad.
