A black and white photo of Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman is widely recognized as one of the greatest heroes in American history.

The Trump administration decided recently to renege on Obama-era plans to redesign the $20 bill. Famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman will no longer replace slave-owning President Andrew Jackson on the bill. Unfazed by the change of heart, one church is now running its own $20 bill printing press in protest.

"The U.S. Treasury said they will not," Pastor Laura Ruth Jarrett declared to her Hope Central Church congregation in Boston. "And we say we will."

From their location in Boston's diverse Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the small church has been stamping all $20 bills collected from its offering plates with Tubman's face.

The simple gesture protests Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's proclamation that Jackson's face would remain on the front of the bill until at least 2028. Then-candidate Trump called the decision to put Tubman's face on the $20 bill 'political correctness' and suggested printing Tubman's face on the $2 bill-- a denomination that is no longer printed.

So as Secretary Mnuchin punts the redesign to a future administration, the Hope Central Church continues to stamp over President Jackson's visage on the $20. With a laugh, Ann Potter described her glee in stamping over Jackson's face on bill after bill. "I'm taking such pleasure in this... Mr. Trail of Tears, gone!"

American History

Andrew Jackson has long been a divisive figure in American politics, drawing both fervent support and smoldering condemnation. Historical records show the country's seventh president owned as many as 160 slaves and played a pivotal role in relocating over 60,000 Native Americans by force to make room for more plantations. More than 4,000 Cherokees died on their march west along what came to known as the Trail of Tears.

But historians also regularly rank Jackson highly. Jackson did delay the Civil War by squashing the Nullification Crisis and was the only president in history to pay off the national debt.

Tubman, meanwhile, escaped from the Maryland plantation where she was born into slavery. After reaching freedom, Tubman almost immediately turned around to aid the escape of others. All told, Tubman led 13 expeditions along the Underground Railroad to help dozens of slaves gain their freedom. Later, Tubman acted as a scout and spy for the Union Army in the Civil War, and in her twilight years was active in the woman's suffrage movement.

Stamp of Approval

Selected amongst thousands of nominations, Tubman would have become the first African American on paper money - her 2020 introduction meant to coincide with the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in America.

Hope Central Church congregant Marylou Steeden says stamping the $20 bills is its own "little rebellion."

Other congregations seem interested in following suit. And now Hope Central Church is now considering becoming a stamping station for anyone seeking to have his or her bills stamped.

The HCC congregation has taken great pride in being both inclusive and committed to racial equity, despite being mostly white. The church's volunteer racial justice team regularly meets with the pastor to brainstorm ways to serve local communities, and all services include a welcome message to "people of all colors, cultures, abilities, sexual orientations and gender expressions."

"We do not value the colonialism of white supremacy," Jarrett tells followers. "Our work is not to provide charity, but rather to provide reparation, to give back what we stole."

The idea seems to be taking off. Etsy shops are sprouting up with their own Harriet Tubman stamps for sale.

What do you think? Is this church right to take a moral stand for a cause they so strongly believe in? Or should churches butt out of political issues?

And yet we are called to be discerning. It's OK to call a spade a spade. Your response indicates that it was actually YOU who judged, as you clearly place a value on racism, and you also clearly judged Jorge. But all that aside, we have a man in the Oval Office who has said 1/3 of the world's population (most of whom are of a particular ethnic background) are unworthy to be welcomed into our homeland. His attempts to slow immigration are targeted exclusively at people with skin darker than his own natural hues, while claiming that illegal immigration is the biggest harm and ignoring the countries that are the source of the most (and white) illegal immigrants.. Only yesterday he defended his attack on the Central Park Exonerated. He twice settled with the justice department for refusing to rent to African Americans. When neo-Nazi's marched in Charlottesville, he stated that "some of them are very fine people." That's not nearly all I have, but what do YOU have?

Trump never said the neo-Nazi’s were very fine people, that is taken out of context.

Here are the unambiguous actual words of President Trump:

“Excuse me, they didn’t put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me, I saw the same pictures you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.”

After another question at that press conference, Trump became even more explicit:

“I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and white nationalists because they should be condemned totally.”

The “some of them are very fine people.” comment was referring to the group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.

I support the peaceful "little rebellion" of the church in question but given the uses that American money is put to in the world such as the distribution of arms, corruption of political systems and support of grossly corrupt governments, oppression of people who dare to disagree with policies, theft of natural resources, "rendition", black ops, and continuous war, I wonder if Harriet Tubman or any other compassionate person would truly consider it an "honour" to appear upon it.

The saying goes that if you have one foot in yesterday and the other in tomorrow how are you going to travel through today? All the earth's nations have raped pillaged, enslaved, and murdered fellow human being since humans became obsessed with power, be it monetary, political, geographical, over resources, and yes even over religion too.

If everyone could get into their thick skulls that we are all in this together regardless of all the above factors, we only have this planet to live on, there is no exit plan or space ark to remove us to another Eutopia the buck stops here, so for once can we please drop personal hatreds for leaders who have been democratically elected, and just demand more of our politicians, and public servants to move into the balance of this decade with a clear understanding that life isn't perfect, but you can make it better.

If the church wants to make a statement about her life and her works, that's fine. I'm not sure defacing currency is the best way to educate the public, but it's probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things given the short life of the average piece of paper money in the US. What's disconcerting is the statement about "the colonialism of white supremacy" and "to provide reparation, to give back what we stole.” Similar words are being spoken in South Africa followed by very un-Christian and very immoral actions.

While I agree that Harriet Tubman deserves the honor of being on currency, it would be a huge cost to change the existing templates at this time. When it's time to update the bills, the matter should be brought up at that time.

As for what this church is doing, they need to stop. They are defacing US currency. Instead of doing this, they need to get out a petition to send to the White House to hopefully change President Trump's decision. This needs to be a nationwide petition in order to have impact.

Another thing that could be done is to launch a Twitter campaign asking President Trump to reconsider. I think I'll send my Tweet out tonight....

        1) The bills are being redesigned for security purposes. It turns out that early 20th Century technology isn't all the effective as we head into the middle of the 21st Century. They're doing the same thing will all the U.S. paper money. This wasn't about promoting Harriet Tubman per se, it was about putting her face on the bill when it was scheduled to be redone anyway. 2) Andrew Jackson was a major player in one of the biggest genocides in history. When that bill is redesigned, it's time someone else got some recognition. Preferably someone who worked AGAINST racism instead of someone who worked FOR racism.

        ?❤️

        1. JASON D BENDER's Avatar JASON D BENDER

Unemployment figures comparing now with 1969 are meaningless as those persons who have given up looking for jobs are not counted.

Regarding economic growth, Obama beats Trump: Job growth has been remarkably consistent since the end of the recession in 2010. The 3.6 million jobs added in the 19 months since Trump took office are roughly comparable to the 3.9 million added in the previous 19 months under Obama. Likewise, unemployment has steadily declined. And wages have inched up at a slow but steady pace.

Goods-producing employment has accelerated since Trump took office, even as job gains in the much larger service sector have slowed. That could be helpful to Republicans, since goods-producing jobs tend to be concentrated in redder, more rural parts of the country. It's important to remember, though, that goods-producing jobs make up a relatively small slice of the overall U.S. economy, accounting for less than 14 percent of the total workforce. By focusing on those jobs, the Trump administration is discounting the industries that employ 86 percent of American workers.

GDP growth has bounced up and down and does not show a clear difference between Trump and Obama. Although Trump often boasts about the strong GDP showing between April and June 2018— when growth topped 4 percent — there were quarters during Obama's tenure when growth was even stronger. Forecasters disagree about whether Trump can deliver sustained, multiyear growth in the 3 percent range, as promised.

So while the White House can certainly point to some yardsticks that indicate a meaningful growth on Trump's watch — small business sentiment and goods-producing job growth — broader measures of the overall economy continue to follow the steady, upward glide path that began under Obama.

First, Harriet Tubman was NOT one of the "greatest" heroes in American history. She was one of the "great" heroes in American history among many and that includes Jackson. So, the post begins with a false statement. Second, defacing currency is against the law and it is a "black" church doing it for one reason only..because they want to throw skin color in the face of the nation. Third, changing history by eliminating iconic statues and images put up by our ancestors will doom the future to repeating the mistakes of the past. Removing such icons is no different than re-writing history. The move to replace Jackson with a black hero based on skin color and the opposition to not do it is tantamount to reverse-bigotry. Leave history alone.

Or could it be that it would cost BILLIONS to redesign and impliment printing of the new bills, collection and exchange and destruction of the old bills?

      1. Bills Spirit's Avatar Bills Spirit

FYI - it does NOT cost billions to redesign and implement new currency.

The most recent redesigns of American currency started in 2003 with the introduction of a new $20 bill, a new $50 bill in 2004, a new $10 note in 2006, a new $5 bill in 2008 and a new $100 bill in 2013. Those redesigns were made to include subtle background colors and a blue 3-D ribbon running through the center of the bill that make the bills more secure and difficult to counterfeit. The revamped $100 bill cost 12.5 cents per bill to produce — a 60% increase over the 7.8 cents it cost to print the older version of the bill. Collection and exchange of old bills is NOT done immediately, but rather is accomplished over the period of time it takes for bills with the previous design to wear out.

The currency operating budget of the Federal Reserve Board for 2019 (which includes the cost of printing new bills) is $955.8 million.

  1. Dragon Priest's Avatar Dragon Priest

Defacing currency is illegal. It would PISS ME OFF seeing it and would not help the movement to remake the $20 bill. That woman was good but it does not rise to the level of being on our money. I would not want Aunt Jemima on our $20 just as a political ploy. Trump did the right thing here. That move would put back black awareness in a very bad light. It is not racist it is what is right and what is not. Same goes for reparations for slavery, which is nothing more than just a ploy to get money from those that had NOTHING to do with it.

    1. kimberly's Avatar kimberly

Exactly. Apparently, the civil war wasn't payment enough for some of these lazy good-for-nothing leftists who think they are entitled to what they haven't earned.

    2. Rev Will's Avatar Rev Will

Actually its not defacing currency. The Treasury department defines Defacing Currency as:

      Defacement of Currency

Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

TO RENDER IT UNFIT TO BE REISSUED.

Larry Felix, former director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, says that much of the legality depends upon what kind of markings would render a bill “unfit for circulation.”

“As long as the note can be processed and sorted and does not lead to premature destruction, it should not be considered defacement,” Felix said.

I wasn't "happy" that zero-bama got elected. However, I never hated him like you hate Trump Mark. I endured. And, with President Trump in office, I was relieved. My happiness is not dependent on someone else like yours apparently is.

You are assuming I "hate" Trump.

I was disappointed that the country would elect someone with so low of character. I am still disappointed that he is supported by people that should have learned his history by now. But I have known of him for many years before his role on "The Apprentice" and apparently many voters were impressed by this.

President Trump's entire goal was to eradicate any influence that Obama may have been. Regardless of your "zero-bama" belief I witnessed very positive changes during his administration. As much as you may be irritated by this fact, the upper peninsula of Michigan has benefitted from health care laws and changes. And there was the beginning of a better understanding of cultures and people different from the incredible majority of the white population here. I'm gay so that helped me directly.

Now I see that eroding when I shop, attend appointments, volunteer and even participate in my local church.

Trump is finding out that being President of the United States is more difficult than he previously thought. He will continuously feed a third of the country with necrotic rhetoric so they will praise him as his staff and secretaries have. That he does easily.

I expect that he is our era's Mule. I hope our species will come through this period evolved for the better as we did after WWII.

Ok well the $2 bill is still being printed so right off the bat the writer lost credibility. As a result of banking policies with businesses which have resulted in low production numbers due to lack of demand, two-dollar bills do not circulate as well as other denominations of U.S. currency. This comparative scarcity in circulation, coupled with a lack of public knowledge that the bill is still in production and circulation, has also inspired urban legends about its authenticity and value and has occasionally created problems for those trying to use the bill to make purchases.

  1. Michael Grace's Avatar Michael Grace

The 2 dollar bill has not been discontinued, a simple Google search takes you to https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/faqs/Currency/Pages/denominations.aspx where the FAQ has these.

Why did the Treasury Department remove the $2 bill from circulation?

The $2 bill has not been removed from circulation and is still a circulating denomination of United States paper currency. The Federal Reserve System does not, however, request the printing of that denomination as often as the others. The Series 2003 $2 bill was the last printed and bears the names of former Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snow and Treasurer Rosario Marin. As of April 30, 2007 there were $1,549,052,714 worth of $2 bills in circulation worldwide.

The key for successfully circulating the $2 bill is for retailers to use them just like any other denomination in their daily operations. In addition, most commercial banks will readily supply their retail customers with these bills if their customers request them in sufficient volume to justify stocking them in their vaults. However, neither the Department of the Treasury nor the Federal Reserve System can force the distribution or use of any denomination of currency on banks, businesses or individuals.

What denominations of currency are in circulation today? Will any new denominations be produced?

The present denominations of our currency in production are $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. The purpose of the United States currency system is to serve the needs of the public and these denominations meet that goal. Neither the Department of the Treasury nor the Federal Reserve System has any plans to change the denominations in use today.

As somebody with Native American heritage, I would prefer to see Harriet Tubman over Andrew Jackson. However, as a Minister, I believe Churches should stay out of politics

    1. kimberly's Avatar kimberly

Jackson was President of the United States. Tubman was not and was one among many who led slaves to freedom. She only led 300 out of millions. She left her entire family behind when she escaped slavery. Jackson was originator of the Democratic party. Jackson forced Native Americans to accept United States sovereignty. He was an advocate for peace in spite of his military background. Native Americans were advocates of war to maintain their sovereignty. They lost and paid the consequences. They would have lost anyway had they integrated into the growing population due to European diseases they had no immunity to. Their relocation not only stopped civil war but actually isolated them from disease and near extinction. Jackson saved an entire race. Tubman saved 300 people. There is no realistic comparison.

      1. Bills Spirit's Avatar Bills Spirit

Tubman put her life at risk multiple times in order to free others (including her family) from the horrors of slavery. Jackson was personally, professionally, politically and legislatively pro-slavery.

Based on the belief that people from less technologically advanced societies are the equivalent of animals; and as such can be captured, penned and kept as property, a justification for whipping, beating, raping, maiming, starving, overworking, and providing but fetid living conditions were exacted upon select human beings under the threat of brutal murder for them and/or their family members.

In humanitarian terms: Tubman contrasts as an American Saint against Jackson's acceptance, promotion and participation in such a brutal ideology.

Jackson had two bullets in him and barely recovered. He put his life on the line literally. Not figuratively. This nation was better for him. It had nothing to do with race. Far two often people today see only skin color. Jackson was instrumental in defeating the British in the war of 1812. He was elected president by popular vote and he fundamentally changed the politics of the United States which wouldn't be the USA today without him. The fact that he owned slaves is irrelevant. Most prosperous people did in those days. We need to read history without ideology but with objectivity to the reality of what actually occurred. Make no mistake.....No individual did more for us today than men like Andrew Jackson.
