Update 11/4/25: Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City.
The New York City mayoral election is coming up in a few short days, and city that never sleeps is projected to elect its first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani's meteoric rise has made him one of the most prominent Muslims in the country. The charismatic young politician is quite open about his Islamic faith, both in what it means to him – and the level of backlash he’s received for it.
When Mamdani won an upset victory in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor earlier this year, he – and his faith – were suddenly vaulted into the spotlight.
Mamdani soon faced an onslaught of attacks for everything from how he prayed to how he eats. Elected officials in the U.S. House went so far as to suggest he be deported, then drafted legislation intended to do just that.
And as election day nears, the attacks on his faith have seemingly only ratcheted up. Is Islamophobia back in style, or is this just a new era of partisan politics?
An Onslaught of Attacks
Mamdani’s critics have not held back.
Some have tried to use 9/11 as an attack line on Mamdani, implying that his election would imperil the city once again.
Famous actors insinuated that Mamdani’s faith must mean he’s a secret homophobe.
Pundits weighed in, suggesting that Mamdani’s election could lead to some sort of Islamic takeover of American cities.
Even elected officials have attacked Mamdani’s faith, with some calling for him to be deported.
Mamdani’s Response
Mamdani addressed these criticisms in a recent video, which has since been viewed 25 million times.
“I will be a Muslim man in New York City,” Mamdani stated softly. “I will not change who I am, I will not change how I eat, I will not change the faith that I am proud to belong to. But there is one thing I will change: I will no longer look for myself in the shadows – I will find myself in the light.”
Mamdani also drew attention for comments about an aunt who no longer felt safe on the subway after 9/11:
Islamophobia on the Rise
Scholars say the attacks on Mamdani’s faith may constitute the biggest wave of Islamophobia since the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, when Muslims nationwide faced a wave of xenophobia, and in some cases, violence.
The Center for the Study of Organized Hate, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit which tracks hate speech, found the amount of online posts with anti-Muslim rhetoric skyrocketed after Mamdani’s upset primary win, and has only increased as the mayoral election looms.
“We found a huge spike in online hate and fear-mongering targeting Muslims in the aftermath of Mamdani’s primary win, blending racism, anti-Muslim bigotry, red-baiting, and anti-immigrant sentiment into one dangerous narrative,” said the organization’s executive director, Raqib Hameed Naik.
“Muslims were portrayed as threats to national security, incompatible with democracy, or as agents of an imagined foreign agenda.”
Can NYC Survive a Muslim Mayor?
Perhaps the bigotry is overblown. After all, in any controversy, the loudest critics are those who take the spotlight; many New Yorkers obviously have no issue with Mamdani's faith and are excited to vote for him.
Yet it's impossible to ignore the noise entirely. The hateful comments, comparisons, and insults clearly signal a distrust of Islam and its followers.
But popularity doesn't lie. If Mamdani comes out on top at the polls, as he is predicted to, New York – and America – will have to come to terms with a Muslim leading its most dynamic city.

Fearing him because he’s not Christian ignores the alternative candidates, like corrupt millionaire with numerous allegations of sexual harassment Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams, indicted for corruption but shielded by Trump—were far worse. What self-respecting citizens would vote for them? Leadership should be judged on action, not religion. Mamdani's working for the people, not millionaires. Besides, if someone's Christian faith is so easily shaken to paranoia and fear by a politician, perhaps it’s time to rethink that faith. True Christianity calls for love and compassion toward all people, regardless of religion: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Galatians 5:14). Try it out. You just might be fearless and be filled with love - Love Christ taught. What a world it would be! And Trump literally said he "hates his opponent." Time to see that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes, but only those of a sheep's! For inwardly he is as ravenous as wolves, evident by all his rotten fruit he produces: scat dumping on his own citizens proves that!

Obviously time will tell. New York is a cosmopolital hub like London and others, so there is a great mixture of religions, races, dress, tastes and so on. The Mayor of such a hub has to engage with its population, many voices and opinions rise in the life of the city and he/she has to be able to organize and prioritize. So we shall see.

If he tries to change those laws or reinterpret them without going through the legislators or courts, he will have violated that oath. Using tax dollars to work for the greater good by providing public education and disaster relief are socialist programs. All these work well within a Constitutional Republic, and when the amendment was passed to start collecting a federal income tax, the constitution made provisions for these socialist programs. Are you suggesting that we do away with the IRS and make every person pay for the roads they drive on? Make every school a private school? Obviously you want to eliminate any form of aid to those who have "less than" or have been hit by disaster, but don't confuse Socialism with Comunism (which seems to be what you're doing by referring to authoritarianism.)

The Dirty War in Argentina was funded by US taxpayers, with Kissinger's blessing! Seems it was a trial run for the USA to see how kidnappings and disappearances turned out- as now it's happening in the USA, even on citizens! I've seen the torture chambers in Buenos Aires myself and know people who survived attacks at their universities. It's remarkable anybody stands for these crimes against humanity and the Constitution. ALL people, including immigrants, are to receive due process - that's what's in the Constitution. Because once immigrants are all gone, those private for profit prisons need beds to fill and shareholders to keep happy with profits - they are then coming for you. Are you going to follow Christ's example and take a stand against the Cesar's state because one love's his neighbor and justice? Or be silenced into submission? I would hope one chooses Christ. The Imitation of Christ is a great book to read! Try it out!

And when enough Muslims are centered in a city they do tend to get a bit pushy, but not more than old NY where you had the Irish, Italians, Poles etc. If your in another's hood you know it ain't good. As for taking over the U.S., that's just panic talk. Many are as observant as Jews are, the Catholics and Greek Orthodox next, then stepping down to Jesus lite the Evangelicals. While incarcerated a fellow Catholic friend and myself went to check out the chapel (Evangelist) and we were kind of pissed off at the mockery of Catholic ceremony. One of the Christians turned around and told us to shut up, and we explained what we were mumbling about. His response was "I tried to be a Catholic, but they didn't have any pamphlets". We had to leave cause we couldn't stop laughing. It was hard enough to observe the tongues part, but pamphlets was too much.

It's a common misconception to think jews, Christians and muslims all worship the same God.
The jew's God promised them certain things. Eternal ownership of Israel, hundreds of separate prophecies pointing to a coming Messiah. They were given a deep rich and unique culture that would preserve them throughout time.
The Christian is the same God with the belief that the Messiah did in fact come as foretold and he is the literal spiritual son of God. Then the book was closed and god would go radio silent until the return of the king. Christians read, study and work towards understanding both old and new testaments in acceptance and in agreement.
Islam denies the entire premise and purpose new testament and demoted Jesus to only a man. It denies the right of Israel to exist and therefore discounts the old testament concerning Israel, the primary focus of the entire old testament. Islam is to physically conquer the world and force it's doctrine under penalty of poverty and death. This behavior can be transposed with how the bible describes Satan's behavior without any wrinkles.
Finally, the book of Revelation and in the Quran paint a very similar picture of the 'end times'.
By the Quran, all Christians are following a false god, false Messiah and we are in fact following The Antichrist.
By the Bible all books following Revelation are false doctrine from false prophets, which Jesus warned of. That puts the Book of Mormon in the same boat as Islam with the Quran and it's author. That's a full rejection of islam and others by the New testament long before those books were ever authored.
At the end of the day, either Christians and jews worship God and Islam is worshipping Satan or Islam is worshipping God and Christians and Jews are worshipping Satan.

Both books paint the believers in the other book as the enemy during the end times. It's actually fascinating. Both can't be right and both can't worship the same God when one calls the other Satan. That brings us to the fourth Abrahamic religion, Satanism. Satanists definitely don't worship God.
I'll give you this. All four abrahamic religions can and do go off the rails and commit atrocities. One by design does. Maybe two but I don't research satanism so I'm willing to be wrong on that one. That goes for paganism and atheism too. Anything with a human can go off the rails.

Nobody rolls into town and kills all the men, nobody takes all the girls and sells them into marriage with the men that killed their family and the towns women don't get raped then murdered. Babies don't he cut from the womb then beheaded. The town boys don't get recruited to do the same thing to the next town.
No homosexuals get executed. They don't get pushed off buildings, stoned or hanged.
Churches or other buildings don't get burned to the ground and replaced with a mosque. Historical statues remain in tact. (Don't confuse the leftists tearing down statues with islam tearing down statues. Might look the same but it's not)
Women don't get publicly flogged for showing their faces, working or going to school.
No suicide bombers, that's a good one.

4 million deaths from atheists/non theists.
If any of these numbers need adjustment I'd bet we could move a couple hundred thousand of the 4 million murders into the islamist slot but still it's a nice picture of who's who in the murder department.
I'm glad you're at least willing to see islam as a concern however I think you're underestimating their potential. Try to find unbiased reporting from the UK and parts of Europe where islam has taken hold. See how the native English culture is transforming into something else. The poor English are just too polite to prevent it.
Always be weary of any leader or group in power that has a bunch of tanks, planes and bombs laying around. At the minimum, the Christian moral compass says they're not supposed to wage wars or kill for ideology's sake. Neither islam or atheists have any such restrictions. Islam is supposed to conquer and they do. Atheists just need to think it's right, make it legal(morally right), then go ahead and start bombing and they do.
Fortunately for our argument nothing will change and Islam will continue to flourish here unhindered, we wouldn't want to be called islamophobes. We'll be able to see I'm on the money with islam, I hope you'll remember.

It would have stopped those two girls from being abused. This is not just one isolated case.

Just because illegal, or legal, immigrants commit crimes does not mean that every one should be kicked out. Statistically, immigrants, regardless of their legal status, are less likely to commit crimes than US citizens.

No, all we should be “kicking out”, as you put it, are those that entered the US illegally. That’s what law and order is all about. Illegal aliens broke the law by illegally crossing our border. Some of those committed further crimes once they were here, which would have never happened if we had had stronger border policies.
We have enough crime by our own legal citizens without having to contend with illegal alien crimes as well.
In my opinion, if we have Green Card holders committing crimes they should be revoked.

You do realize that most of the "illegal aliens" you're claiming entered the US illegally, actually did enter through legal means, only to overstay their visa in many cases. "Stronger border policies" wouldn't stop this from happening. We certainly need immigration reform, but a "stronger border" is not the answer.
It also needs to be mentioned, many of those being detained and disappeared by ICE are legal asylum and refugee seekers who have been trying to come here the right way, only to be detained at their court hearings and told they're now illegally in the country and being sent to a detention center without any notification to the persons' family members. That is not "law and order."

It’s estimated that 8 million illegally cross the border during Biden’s administration alone in only 4 years. If you think they did that legally, you are sadly mistaken. It’s also estimated that there are 300,000 children gone missing during his administration, which this administration is trying to locate to repatriate with their parents. Sex trafficking is a terrible crime.
Any Visa holders that overstay their welcome our subject to being removed. You are obviously under the impression that ICE is an illegal operation detaining people that they shouldn’t. In most cases they know who they are looking for when they go to a particular location. Fortunately, more than 1 1/2 million illegal aliens self deported. That was the correct thing to do.
I feel sorry for those who have been waiting in line for years with their applications trying to enter this country legally, just like I did, whose applications have been delayed due to the millions of illegal aliens trying to jump the line by entering the United States illegally.
This current administration has finally closed the borders with no known illegal entries for the last few month. This should’ve been done long ago. Drug-trafficking from across the border has been majorly impacted. Hopefully, you are as pleased with that as I am.

I have problems with the illegal ways ICE is deporting undocumented immigrants. They aren't being given due process, they aren't being provided lawyers, they're being treated horribly, and even the family members of the deportees are not informed of what has happened to them.
Undocumented immigrants often come here illegally because, despite being a demand for their labor, there are not legal avenues for them to immigrate legally, usually because they're considered "low skilled" workers.

I don’t believe that the Constitution of the United States of America allows sharia law. There is only one law in this country. (Though some have been running slipshod over it of late) but eventually the people of this country will take a stand and say, the Constitution is the law of the land and no religion is set above any other within this country. Not Christian, Not Islam, Not Hindi nor Jewish nor any other religious group’s laws and tenets may be implemented into the Constitution of the United States of America.
