A photo of a soldier in uniform bringing a sledgehammer down on a statue of Jesus rocketed across social media over the weekend. Within hours it had drawn condemnation from religious leaders across faith traditions, an apology from Israel's prime minister, and a global wave of discussion about what sacred symbols mean when they get caught up in the machinery of war.
The photograph surfaced on April 19 and shows an Israeli soldier operating in Debl, a Maronite Christian village in southern Lebanon near the Israeli border. In the image, a statue of Jesus lies tipped from its cross, and the soldier is mid-swing with a sledgehammer.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the image's authenticity on Monday, calling the conduct "wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops" and announced it was investigating the incident. Military officials also pledged to help the local community restore the statue.
Condemnation From Every Direction
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was "stunned and saddened" by the image and apologized to believers in Lebanon and around the world. He also promised the soldier responsible would be brought to justice.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar called it a "shameful action" that ran against the country's stated values of religious tolerance. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called for "swift, severe & public consequences."
In Lebanon, feelings are still raw. "One of the Israeli soldiers broke the cross and did this horrible thing, this desecration of our holy symbols," said Fadi Falfel, a priest in the town, speaking to Reuters.
Nearly a third of Lebanon's population is Christian, and Maronites – a denomination in full communion with Rome – are among the country's largest religious communities.
When Sacred Objects Become Targets
The incident has reignited a long-running debate about how religious sites fare during conflict. In fact, the Jesus statue in Debl joins a long and painful list of religious artifacts damaged or destroyed during periods of conflict.
Just a few examples from modern history:
Reims Cathedral (France, 1914)
German artillery shelled the Gothic cathedral where French kings had been crowned for six centuries, sending its roof up in flames. The image of the burning cathedral became one of World War I's defining propaganda photographs and helped further the modern debate about protecting cultural heritage in wartime.
Kristallnacht (Germany and Austria, 1938)
In a coordinated two-day pogrom, Nazi stormtroopers burned more than 1,400 synagogues and smashed Jewish homes and shops with sledgehammers. Historians often describe the night as the opening act of the Holocaust.
Babri Masjid (India, 1992)
A mob of roughly 150,000 Hindu activists tore down a 16th-century mosque in Ayodhya with hammers and rods, believing the site to be the birthplace of the god Rama. Some 2,000 people were killed in riots in the aftermath, an incident that reshaped Indian politics for a generation.
The Bamiyan Buddhas (Afghanistan, 2001)
The Taliban used dynamite and artillery to demolish two 6th-century sandstone Buddhas carved into a cliff face, drawing condemnation from Muslim, Buddhist, and secular leaders around the world.
Ten Commandments (Arkansas, 2017)
Religious symbols don’t have to be targeted during wartime to send a shockwave, though. Back in 2017, and Arkansas man drove his car into a newly installed Ten Commandments monument outside the state capitol, streaming the act on Facebook Live before his arrest.
Where Does Responsibility Lie?
As the Israeli government continues its investigation, some questions remain open for debate. Is a government responsible for the actions of its individual soldiers? And what obligations do armies – from any country, in any war – owe to the religious symbols of the communities whose land they operate on?

Laughable, some of the comments made. 1. A few of you Served in the Military. YOU KNOW the psychological damage this will do to a person/people. The Jewish people on a whole do NOT believe that Jesus Christ is the "Savior." That is KNOWN. It IS idolatry. And viewing it as such, it is not a huge disaster as people are making out to be. It is Sad because of the very nature of people to be Cruel to another, that is a fact. It is not a "historical" monument that Islamist have destroyed. Christians have torn, burned or buried. The Article above addresses a FEW of the Historical monuments that were destroyed. TWO of the popular Religions have destroyed MORE cultural monuments than ANY other Religion. Christianity and Islam. The Third popular Religion Buddhism have no "documented" records of destroying any Cultural monuments. Judahsim though also have destroyed many Cultural monuments and other items. I CAN personally attest to the Destruction that Christianity has done to the Hawaiian archipelago. Just like what the missionaries did to the children of the Indigenous First Peoples, so they also did to the Kanaka Ma'oli. While SAD, it is not something I will shed tears over. I can shake my head and tsk, tsk. BUT The destruction of Religious Icons in War will conitinue until ONE Religion is forced upon all the peoples of the Earth.

There simply is no excuse for the callous destruction of this symbol of Catholicism. It exemplifies hate related religious intolerance and is conduct unbecoming a soldier of any nation. Yes, history has its examples of intolerance in every faith but that is history. If you don't learn from your mistakes you're bound to repeat them. Such hatred is not inherent but learned. This soldier should not only be made to make reparations but dishonorablely discharged from the service and charged with hate crimes. Additionally, I suggest the entire army be forced to have sensitivity training because of him and everyone who takes that training know why. This has caused great damage to people of all faiths. Repairing such damage is never easy but the Country that allowed such hatred to fester must make the example.

I'm appalled that it took a photo of a violent act against an inanimate object to elicit such a strong response. Hundreds of civilians have been murdered. Clearly, we need photographers in the field taking pictures of the moments that innocent human beings, who are not soldiers or politicians, are being destroyed. Although I wonder if the people so upset over a mere statue would even care if it was a human man, woman, or child instead.

The Word of God says in Exodus 20:1-6 and in Deutoronomy 5:6-10 Not to make idols of any kind or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You are not to worship them or serve them. God will not tolerate it.
-
I think it is extremely sad that anything that has lasted for centuries is destroyed by anyone so quickly. There aren’t even any words for an act like that. Disgraceful? Inhumane? Very sad? No. There are no words that are strong enough. There should be a global law that condemns such behavior. I have to state though that I’d much rather focus on Jesus’ life than on his death. I would much rather see a statue of the kind, loving Jesus.
-
As a veteran and now Chaplain, I think this soldier should be immediately jailed. What he did was a disgrace. Jews hate Christian and Jesus. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. When I went to Israel on a Christian mission, they spit on us and made us not feel welcomed. They mocked us and physically assault us. They will never tolerate Christians, yet, they want Christians to unite as brethren in their wars against their enemies. They are the devils in sheep’s clothing. Demons from satan’s hell.
-
First time around they crucified Him. Now its images! But the TRUTH lives on! HE will be here long after Israel is gone!

Religion is the basis of all evil.

Its ok... we all have that one stupid brother among us that makes us look bad... But, we know that most Jews are actually thankful for the Christian Patriarchy. Without us, they would not exist... Hitler would have had his way. We are that Christian Patriarchy that ensures that all punks get to mouth off without getting their jaw broken ... The loving Christian Patriarchy that makes sure all you blue haired, they-them, butches get to lie and say you're not trying to indoctrinate our kids at school with your gay bull crap... Man, if it wasn't for the Christian Patriarchy, y'all would be STFU and wearing a Burka...and if you complained about it someone would beat your teeth out of your head... and if you snatched that Burka off to cuss a brother out, someone would throw acid in your face. It is the Christian Patriarchy that ensures your right to keep and bear arms so evil men don't just decide to rape you every day...when they decide. It is the Christian Patriarchy who will stand in-between you and Evil so that we bear injury and NOT you. So before you pop your mouths off, understand that it is the Christian Patriarchy who is the most dangerous men on Earth... and we still love you... But, we might slap you if yall keep on...
-
So totally fine to indoctrinate children into Christianity, a religious belief that is wholly based on faith not facts, but horrible to tell children that gay people exist despite plenty of evidence that they do?
We wouldn't be wearing burkas if it wasn't for the Christian Patriarchy; that's wild hyperbole. Muslims have existed peacefully in America for centuries and yet Christianity is still the dominant religion here. Even in communities where there is a majority Muslim population, there are not religious fundamentalists requiring non-Muslims to adhere to their beliefs. Meanwhile, Christian fundamentalists are trying to discriminate against non-Christians and force Biblical law upon the country.
The authoritarian, extremist sect of Islam is hardly different from the authoritarian, extremist sect of Christianity. There's a Christian church in Indiana who recently called for all LGBTQ+ persons to be put to death or for them to kill themselves. Then there's the children who end up killing themselves after being forced to undergo conversion therapy or because their Christian family ostracizes them.
The Christian Patriarchy subjugated people of color to brutal chattel slavery and justified it using the Bible. The Christian Patriarchy prevented women from being able to vote, to own property, or even open their own bank accounts and wants to return to the days when women had less rights. The Christian Patriarchy does not protect women from rape by giving them guns, it makes them the property of a man and leads to more sexual abuse of women, not less. The Christian Patriarchy justifies hitting children as punishment for doing something believed to be wrong according to their faith which is clearly child abuse. The Christian Patriarchy is not loving, it is driven by hate and a desire for power to be only in the hands of men, and often times only in the hands of White men. The Christian Patriarchy is, in your own words, "the most dangerous men on Earth" and it does not protect us from evil, it perpetuates it.

Sir you are on a church website. stop acting surprised that they're are Christians here.

Despite what he says, Netanyahu has gone out of his way to make sure Christians feel unwelcome and uncomfortable in Israel. All this due to his bowing to and accepting as partners the ultra orthodox parties that demand cleansing of all non-Jewish elements. This never happened before Ariel Sharon legitimized those parties.
-
Let us then see how they would fair without the support of the English-Speaking Christian Patriarchy... I'd be willing to be they would not last a week...

All Believers! Open your eyes! Read this out loud so your ears will speak the words of our God and you will hear the Father through the sound of your own voice.
I am using the NIV PROPHECY STUDY BIBLE
EX: 20:2 " You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."
We are now thousands of years into the future of these words spoken by our God, Lord and Savior, and written in stone by his hand. Know that the Creator is no joke. We all have grown up and can see many versions of the so called believers who through their practices do not obey this COMMANMENT. So, I say to change this we must reprogram how we think. We must learn obedience to the words of our God. The Bible or Torah are his teachings to believers. Because of so much false teachings and acts against his teachings to us, we must learn how to change our programing. The reason you/we always must read his direct or spoken words OUT loud is so you hear his voice through you. Then you repeat what you have read three times out loud. This is the technique for reprograming our subconscious. Which controls our conscious mind. This technique helps us to focus ourself and change what is in us put there by forces before we understood our God.
So, let all idols be destroyed. Learn to believe in our God, for our God is three in one. God the Father (Creator); Lord God the son (Jesus); the Holy Spirit (the Doer). They are one although they are different and separate.

It's not an idol, jew

Never forget Jesus is and has been a Jew. He is the Lord God, The Son of God. His Father, God, (I like to say "The Creator"), sent him to fulfill his, God's will. Jesus did not want to do it. The Holy Spirit put the seed of Jesus into Mary when she reached puberty. Jesus main mission was to fulfill God's will. Jesus's brethren give him up to be crucified. Many, Jews during his walk and today have followed him and believe in him. (search - Jews for Jesus) God the Father has always had problems with the Jews since they were freed from Pharaoh. Read Exodus, and count the number of Jews the Father put to death before they reach the River Jordan because of their arrogance. Never forget Jews have hunted and persecuted Jesus's believers since the name Jesus has been spoken. Study your scriptures, especially the Pentecost and the New Testaments. Do that and you will know that is true. Trying to figure the why, since that hatred has never made any since. Jews like to say the Laws of Moses. They never say The Father gave Moses the Law to teach the Jews his ways. They never admit that Moses did not want to be their leader. Moses had to obey God's command to Moses to lead his people. Study and know why the Father has turned his back on his children and the only way to the Father is through Jesus his Son.
-
Why is the cross upside down. The Idf person should be fired immediately and imprisoned. He is not doing military work so why is he in uniform. He certainly has no respect for a holy icon.
-
You don't "fire" a soldier. You Court Martial him and then imprison him. The IDF is in uniform in Lebanon going after Hezbollah.
-
Don't let the propaganda of Netanyahu fool you. Israel is trying to expand its territory, and Netanyahu is trying to distract from his possible indictment and prosecution for his political crimes, humanitarian crimes, and war crimes in the West Bank and Gaza. He's using the attacks by Iran to justify the attacks on civilian targets in Lebanon and ignore the settler crimes in the West Bank. And before anyone starts yelling about October 7th, I do condemn that horror and the monsters who carried it out. Just tell me how an 8 year old little girl in Gaza had any responsibility for that tragedy, which caused her to deserve being shot by IDF troops.
-
I can make up a reason to invade Israel, too. We gotta get Irkud Labatt! They're terrorists who kill innocent Isreali children! Nuke Israel to get that darned Irkud Labatt, if necessary!

With all the religious iconography that Christians have destroyed, and all the religious suppression that they've engaged in - I can't shed a single tear over this.
-
I posted recently about Pope Leo v Trump Admin fizz match. I agreed with Leo, somewhat, but was also dismissive of such words from a church responsible for untold millions of monstrous crimes. Still, I agreed with Leo's sentiment.
One of the challenges of this world is to see and experience these things and not become so hardened tgat we can't shed a tear.
I won't pretend that I'm as saintly as my words might suggest. But I do stand by them.
For me, crosses are one thing, and crucifixes are quite another. I think a crucifix is almost ghoulish and ignores the ministry of Yeheshoah with iconography that hails a part of the Jesus story ('died for our sins') that seems to undermine Universal order. Maybe I'm wrong about that. Be that as it may, I prefer to find tge things he exampled--the suppressed real stuff and the canonized maybe real--rather than focus on the grisly.
Crosses mean something else to me entirely, unrelated to a Roman penchant for defiling symbols.
I think that the IsntReal regime (not 'Jews' but a control grid that hides behind Judaism and rules the government of the nation-state called Israel, and twists the mind of its populace) is responsible for creating the mindset of hate and utter disrespect for the humanity of 'other.' And so is this individual and any who supported the move.
Shed that tear if mot fir the people whose icon was assailed, then for the twisted wretchedness that haunts the soul if 'Israel' and such as take vile actions like this, which are intended to wound and demoralize, but which enrage and unify, their ostensible enemies.
I have the same attitude about 'beheading' Iran's religious regime, which regime I hold also monstrous for many atrocities Many examples of parallel rotten behavior...
But letting it rot the goidness of your heart is you wrecking you.
Metanoia.

Seems these guys went out of their way to stage this and take the pic. I doubt it was coincidental. As long as they don’t take it the wrong way when Muslims wipe their butt with the Tora. Once you open the door, there’s no stopping it.
-
Of course it was staged! So was Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima! There, a photo was taken of the capture of one hill, even though the battle lasted for days afterwards. In this case, they will likely spin a story that Hezbollah was using that Church as a base to launch missiles at Israel, and this "soldier" lost control.

To answer this question "Is a government responsible for the actions of its individual soldiers?" Yes. 1989 while in Tijuana me two Navy friends and three Marine friends got into a bar fight and arrested. The Mexican government held the United States Marines &Navy responsible and accountable. We became pawns in a political game and the US Marines sent tanks and troops to Tijuana to force them to release us into the military custody. At disaplenary hearing the charges were "Creating and international incident" & "Actions unbecoming of an officer of the United States military". I was offered choice of punishment: 1) other than honorable discharge. or 2) go through Marine Boot Camp. I choose the Boot Camp. Gained greater respect for our Marines.

Looks more like they were beheaded Jesus.

Maybe they were done playing pin the Jew on the cross on Easter.

People do stupid things all the time, whether it’s religiously involved or not. I guess no one is perfect. Netanyahu said he was "stunned and saddened" by the image and apologized to believers in Lebanon and around the world. He also promised the soldier responsible would be brought to justice, so what else is there to be said?

Interesting 🤔 in the list didn't mention US & Iran soldiers destroying entire religious ancient cities with religious temples and artifacts Even if not worship today they have great historical and religious value. As an Archeologist it's saddening the lost of history. Oh, the most famous destruction of a religious artifact the French (Neapolitan's army) deliberately shooting off the Sphenix's nose with a canon in 1881. I'm mixed feelings on this event; on one hand YHWH of my Hebrew bloodline Commands the Hebrew soldier to do what he is doing: it's in scripture, however we don't have the soldier's explaining his actions and going simply by the photograph I can't judge his actions. On the other hand as pointed out regardless of what it is it belongs to someone else and destroying another's Property is also covered in Scripture to be repaid 7 times it's value. Conversation with your brother other day; Him: "If a government says all religions are equal to be tolerated then the government in that regard does not have to be followed" Me: "I believe you are misunderstood what they mean by "equal". In politics they merely mean they have the right to worship how their spiritual text instructs them... As long as the government can tell them what they can and can't do. It does not mean the government believe that they are all equal and valid before YHWH. Except in terms the government believes ALL "religions" are a load of horse crap, But if it keeps you pacified then they tolerate it." In 1987 I was "Put on the synagogue" because I asked the wrong question that still unanswered right now. Me, "If the commandments of YHWH say we must sacrifice, then why don't we?" Rabbi, "The United States government won't allow us to sacrifice animals." Me, "So, you're saying that the United States government is above God?" That doesn't explain way the Nation of Israel still doesn't sacrifice as commanded by YHWH. As a Messiac Jew I know Yeshua prediction of "In one year after the resurrection of The Son Of Man the sacrifice will cease." And one year after Yeshua's ascension sacrifice in the temples ceased without explanation. The temple went through the motions until 70 AD and Yeshua's second prediction came true every stone of the Temple thrown down. Which gets back to the issue at hand.
-
They (Jews) still do (sacrifice) in their tunnels underground. We (normal people) don't because Jesus ended that stupid stuff with His sacrifice.

It's unfortunate that people choose to desecrate other people's idols just as they do other peoples' lives. Of course, that is the problem, isn't it: we are taught not to make or identify with idols in the first place? Disrespectful? Certainly. It's still an idol. It's not alive. It's just an image, an association; it's endowed with a meaning we were taught not to create: worse, the splinter or tooth from the jawbone of a psycho-babbling medieval eccentric, now canonized, believed to intervene in our lives and provide miracles to g-d's greatness. But while we are worrying about images of plaster or other raw materials: how many LIVING PEOPLE have been destroyed, sometimes by generations, and sometimes all at once, in the name of ...whatever the insane excuse is? Bibi and his minions lack credibility. They can bomb and level cities, starve peoples, and murder 10's of thousands of people and children upon children; they can sanction domestic terrorism by settlers who shoot and kill indigenous peoples, and take their lands, and they can drop bombs on multiple nations with the blessing and help of the Thing Called Trump... a thing that demands itself to be idolized.... And people are worried about one idol.... An idol, regardless of who it personifies, or what beliefs or meanings it is meant to hold... is still a man-made thing... and filled with nothing but human meaning. The meaning is somewhat skewed. Which is why we have been taught: neither create nor endow an idol....
-
This makes sense because it was The Breaking of The Covenent with Jehovah by The Tribe of Judah that resulted in Jehovah using The Roman Emperor Tutus to DISPERSE The Tribe of Judah in 70 AD which DISPERSAL began The Diaspora. So whoever that I.D.F. Soldier is he is not of The Tribe of Judah. He is a Zionist Terrorist who Protects and Serves a Zionist Regime that was established though TERRORISM and which has practiced TERRORISM every day of its existence. Amen?
-
Amen. Jesus (a HEBREW from GALILEE, not a Jew/Judean) said it best: "You (Jews) are of your father the devil." It doesn't get any more clear than that.

Destroying someone else's property is inappropriate, even if it's just a critter from mythology.

ALL THE CRIMINAL ACTIONs BECAME LIVE in 2014 WHEN tRUMPSHIT the CRIMINAL CAME ON THE POTUS SCENE
-
Yes yes yes, trump trump Trump.
This story is about an IDF soldier taking a hammer to a jesus statue John.
-
So many haters put down Trump because he is a criminal, and yet two billion people worship a convicted criminal and consider Him their Savior. Interesting.
-
That would help to explain why the Evangelical right continues to support Trump despite his crimes and violent rhetoric.
-
"Alleged" crimes. I don't think you get the comparison. Jesus was innocent.
-
-
Ronaldo, that's a very unique observation. You're right though! Jesus was convicted and sentenced to death.
Never saw that one before.

Is Trump in the room with us now?

I think sometimes they have to kill people they don't want to and maybe that makes him angry and feels like why isn't he doing this job. It's just concrete and he has to take human flesh and lives to protect our country. Lets get off of the concrete people.
