sign memorializing renee good during anti ice protest
Protests against the killing of Renee Good are happening across the country.

Protests have erupted nationwide in response to the January 7th killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent. The fatal shooting has rapidly divided the nation, with some alleging that ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot Good in self defense, while others call it nothing less than state-sanctioned murder.

Now, faith leaders across the country are moving from the pulpit to the streets as outrage over the incident continues to swirl.

Faith Leaders Take to the Streets

Fury over the incident is most concentrated in Minneapolis, where tens of thousands have marched through downtown corridors and demonstrated outside federal buildings in the days after Good’s death.

Many of the faith leaders calling for justice in Minneapolis today were also key organizers of the demonstrations protesting the police murder of George Floyd in 2020, drawing direct parallels between the two killings.

Among them is Rabbi Jason Rodich, who says Good was "murdered by forces of evil."

“We have now witnessed Renee Good be shot in the street because she wanted to be a legal observer, a moral witness for her neighbors,” said the Rev. JaNaé Bates Imari, who heads a multifaith activist group. “In the Holy Scriptures, in the Bible, it says, ‘Woe to those who decree unjust laws.’ Today that woe belongs to DHS, to ICE and to those in Congress who refuse to hold them accountable.”

Anger Toward the White House

Protests over the killing are erupting across the country – and some are taking their outrage directly to Washington D.C.

“God is not neutral about violence. God is not neutral about state power,” said the Rev. Cassandra Gould, who recently organized a faith-based protest outside the White House. “God is also not a God of silence, and neither is the church.”

Bishop Dwayne Royster put a more direct challenge to president, saying, “somebody’s gotta hold Donald Trump accountable for all the evil that’s happening in this country.”

A Nation Divided

Even as outrage intensifies across the country, not everyone sees Good as a victim. The Trump administration alleges she was a “domestic terrorist” who weaponized her vehicle in an attempt to kill Ross. Ross, the government says, had no choice but to defend himself with deadly force.

President Trump described Good as “very violent” and “very radical."

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance described her death as “a tragedy of her own making.” Vance's remarks in particular struck a nerve, with some critics going as far as to question the sincerity of his Catholic faith.

“Vance’s twisted and wrongheaded view of Christianity has been repudiated by two popes,” wrote National Catholic Reporter digital editor John Grosso. “His Catholicism seems to be little more than a political prop, a tool only for his career ambitions and desire for power.”

This is far from a one-sided issue for faith leaders, however.

Other prominent figures – particularly those aligned with the Trump Administration – condemned the protests and even insinuated that demonstrators are being paid to attend.

“The protests we see across the country right now are underpinned by the radical socialist left, whose goal is to make the United States like Venezuela, ultimately destroying the America we know,” wrote evangelist Franklin Graham in a fiery Facebook post.

The Role of Faith in Tragedy

The uproar over Renee Good’s killing has become more than a debate about one tragic moment; For the faithful, it is also a referendum on the moral responsibility of the religious community to protest injustice – if only they could agree on what actually happened.

For some religious leaders, this is a clear-cut case of standing with the vulnerable against the unchecked use of state power. For others, the protests themselves are viewed as insincere political theater over the death of a woman who foolishly disobeyed authority and paid the ultimate price.

As churches, clergy, and believers line up on opposite sides of the street, the question lingers: what role should faith play when the nation is so polarized that the facts of this case can’t be agreed upon?

I did not see her "violently protesting". Or ramming anyone. I saw her trying to leave. ICE thugs seem to enjoy violence. Smashing in doors, throwing citizens to the ground, breaking in car windows, gassing people, detaining unaccompanied children and shooting citizens. I suspect many of them are January 6th mobsters pardoned (!) by Trump and given a job.

    Are we safer now?

FAITH LEADERS? I THINK THEY ALL NEED TO GO BACK AND LEARN A FEW THINGS. LIKE YOU NEVER, EVER, POINT ANY VEHICLE AT LAW ENFORCEMENT, or any person. It is a 2-ton killing machine. You interfere with the LAW, especially when they TELL you to stop, etc. YOU are breaking the law, and can and should be arrested.ALL of these demonstrators are antagonizing LEO and violating the law. I am not talking about PEACEFUL demonstrations. NONE of this is peaceful, and they should be arresting them. Imagine, we now have a SICK SOCIETY that cares more for the ILLEGAL CRIMINAL THUGS than for their own neighbors. UNREAL behavior. Sadly, SHE CHOSE her destiny. albeit a terrible action on her part. They were both complicit in their action(s), which have serious consequences......

Don't forget also that her wife WAS CONTRIBUTORY to her actions, saying"DRIVE BABY DRIVE".She should have been home taking care of her kids!

Least we forget one most IMPORTANT FACT. WHY HAVE WE NOT SEEN FOOTAGE FROM HER WIFES PHONE? THEY MAY BE INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE..... SO ALL YOU FOOLISH FAITH MINISTERS should ALL be ashamed of what you are doing. You are ALL destroying your STATE, CITY, and TOWNS, with your foolish rhetoric.

We i. England have heard 2 different stories from the evidence I have seen on YouTube that poor woman did not drive her car or use it as a weapon towards any Ice agents or any persons for that.matter The agent should be held accountable fired and life imprisonment it's disgusting to treat an innocent person like he did 😉

Yes, it’s a very sad situation that someone lost their life in those circumstances.

It’s also very sad that there were very few demonstrations when people like 35 year old Laken Riley, 7-year old Ivory Smith, 8-year old Maverick Martzen (Aged 8), 10-year-old Alex “AJ” Wise Jr. 18-year-olds Taliyah Crochet and Rylan Oncale, 19-year-olds Anya Varfolomeev and Nicholay Osokin, 20-year-old Katie Abraham, 21-year-old Sarah Root, 29-year-old Grayson Davis, 44-year-old Police Officer David Lee, 47-year-old Melissa Powell and her 16-year-old son, Riordan, 70-year-old Robert Boles, to name just a few, all losing their lives as a result of illegal aliens being in this country.

I don’t believe in the efficacy of prayer, but let’s all at least give a thought to those, and their families, who have needlessly lost their lives.

Such a tragic and needless death. The killer should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Apparently, vaccine disinformation, healthcare changes, food assistance cuts and safety changes aren’t killing off enough people fast enough to support MAGA.

The killing of Renee Good was nothing more than State sanctioned murder. I have seen the videos and they show that there was no reason for the ICE agent to shoot her. She was trying to pull away from him and he was in no danger. ICE has become nothing more than Trumps own personal band of stormtroopers. They must be stopped.

I do not condone violent protesting. But the ICE agent that killed that poor mother should be fired!!!

Fired?? The agent should be prosecuted for MURDER. As far as "faith" leaders speaking out, let's not forget that it was Christian bigots that are responsible for the nazi like regime that is creating fear and hate in what use to be the greatest country in the world. The president is touted as the "war" president. The department of defense is now the department of war. This is not the country that I served.
