A Disney animate show unveiled a male princess character
Disney says its programs are meant to educate children about LGBTQ issues, but some Christian groups say its more akin to indoctrination.

The popular animated Disney show Star vs. The Forces of Evil recently featured a young male character who chooses to dress up as a princess.

The episode drew immediate backlash from numerous conservative groups, including the American Family Association, who took issue with the show's message that there's nothing wrong with boys dressing like girls (or vice versa).

On the flip side, many LBGTQ news outlets commended Disney's decision to address the controversial topic of gender identity in children, calling it a "bold move" for the network.

Sending a Progressive Message

First of all, let's look at what actually happened in the show. One of the main characters, Marco, transforms himself into a princess for a visit to the "School for Wayward Princesses." But when the evil headmistress discovers a hair on his chest, Marco is suddenly in danger of being kicked out. Instead of getting the boot, though, all the female princesses decide to stand up for Marco, defending his decision to dress as a princess.

Regarding the chest chair, one princess shouts: "That doesn't prove anything! Princesses can be hairy!"

"Why does it matter if he's a boy? Nothing he said was wrong!" says another.

"He can be a princess if he wants to!" the girls all agree. After all, they insist that being a princess is a "state of mind," not a matter of gender.

The scene sent a strong message in favor of allowing kids to dress however they feel comfortable regardless of their biological gender.

Spreading Propaganda?

Disney has been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community, featuring gay characters in shows and movies on numerous occasions. In fact, Star vs. The Forces of Evil had previously drawn fire from religious groups when it became the first Disney program to feature a same-sex kiss scene.

The American Family Association, a Christian activist group, has been a frequent critic of Disney's so-called "social activism," especially its influence on children. They argue that Disney's insistence on featuring gender nonconforming and LGBTQ characters in children's programs will have "grave and eternal consequences" on society.

Disney says its programming decisions are meant to educate children about LGBTQ issues.

However, critics contend this philosophy has been taken too far, moving beyond the boundaries of "educational programming" and crossing the line into "progressive propaganda" territory. They insist such messages are especially insidious when fed to children, who are highly impressionable. This sentiment was echoed by popular evangelist Franklin Graham in a recent Facebook post:

"Disney used to be the brand that parents could trust. They were kind of like the 'gold seal' of family programming. But those days are long gone. Disney is in the LGBTQ camp, and they're wanting to use so-called family-friendly programs to influence the youth of today to accept and to be a part of the destructive LGBT lifestyle."

The Right Way to Educate?

Disney holds an undeniably powerful position in popular culture, but are they really guilty of abusing this power to indoctrinate the nation's youth? That claim seems a bit extreme. LGBTQ individuals are part of our global community, and they're not going away no matter how badly some Christian groups may hope for them to do just that. Best children learn about these issues as opposed to being hidden from them.

As for the programming itself, critics complain that it encroaches on sensitive subjects, such as same-sex relationships, which should be left up to parents to explain to their kids. But on the other hand, Disney's supporters point out that programs like Star vs. The Forces of Evil do wonders in helping to promote tolerance and understanding in children from an early age especially if their parents don't happen to look so favorably on the LGBTQ community.

What do you think?

Some of these "Christan Groups" need a reality check. LGBTQ issues are not part of an agenda. They are issues directly related to the bigots and so called "Christian Groups" destroying and slandering individuals who are different. If it's not gays, it's kids with long hair who read Harry Potter. It's girls who wear makeup. It's that witch with the chimes in her yard. It's those adults who go out after 8pm.

What happened to the majority rule? The majority don't care about strange things. The majority wants good clean entertainment. The majority don't live in cities. The Majority believe in a creator and some sort of morality. The ability to think, be good, do good, and learn what is bad, unhealthy, nonproductive behavior is what makes human and civilized. Unless you believe we are animals. Then why do we have laws, are condemn people for killing? That's what Animals do. It's pretty bad when every channel promotes the LGBT lifestyle. 1% of the nation. Not very equal. Come on now!

      1. Alicia's Avatar Alicia

Wait....are you implying that if a person is gay or transgender, that person can't be moral?

TV doesn't "promote" the LGBT lifestyle...TV makes people AWARE that we are all different and there's nothing wrong with that. Seriously, dude....I'm not going to say "Hmmmm....there's a gay couple on Modern Family and they seem so happy! I'm going to be gay now." It's either in you or it isn't. Nothing watched on TV is going to force someone into a lifestyle they don't feel comfortable with. These shows EDUCATE without being preachy. They let kids know that it's OK to be different, but it's also OK to just be yourself, no matter what.

If you don't like it, dont watch it. And your 1% number is way off. More than 4% of American adults identify as LGBT, more than 8% have engaged in same-sex behavior, and 11% reported some same-sex attraction. That's from a large scale study done in 2016.

The LGBT "lifestyle" is nothing more than people who happen to be different from you in that one aspect. Being LGBT doesn't define your entire being. It's a small part of who you are. What you see as "promoting" is nothing more than recognizing that LGBT people exist and should not have to stay "in the closet" to protect the delicate sensibilities of those in "the majority" who find them "strange". Your "majority rule" concept does not jibe with what the US is about. If you don't like something you see on TV, vote with your remote, your feet or your wallet.

Witchcraft like the Christian faith, the Muslim/Islamic faith and so many others is not evil. It is how you use the information and such things. Wiccans for instance only use candles as sacrifice, and if they do a blood sacrifice...the blood must come from themselves. However, many religions practice blood sacrifices...Judaism is one of them or was for a while. Hindus did for a while too. No religion is perfect and none of them should hold themselves as better than the other, as they all had animalistic rituals at one time. Barbarism runs in all of our bloodlines.

Masculine boys and men will never seek to resemble women and feminine girls and women will never seek to resemble men, regardless of sexual orientation. Regardless of my sexual orientation (which is none of your business) I have known a lot of manly gay and bisexual men who only identified as men, and wouldn't be caught dead wearing a dress. Many gay men don't even like watching drag shows, cruising anything that resembles a women. A lot of gay people naturally resemble straight people, and unless they tell you otherwise you'd never know the difference. And considering that I'm sure there are far more gays and bi-sexuals in this country and throughout the world than any poll or survey ever concluded. I've even heard of some very manly straight men who just wanted to find out what their wives felt like... some on multiple occasions. And that's not straight, regardless of what they think about themselves. I've even heard of some straight men ( and have known some) who were cross dressers, and even some who were drag queens. Did that boy princess in that Disney show say he was gay, was he having gay sex, or did they show him being in love with another boy? Why couldn't he have been a feminine straight boy? There are really some of them too. Some of them even like to play with Barbie dolls. And what about all those movies where a young straight man pretends to be a woman so he can join a college girls fraternity or something similar with ulterior motives in mind? That's enough for y'all to think about.

Maybe it was Walt Disney who did'nt have good morals, and his idea of family values was screwed up, so he ought to be turning in his grave. And did you ever consider that Walt Disney might have been a closet queen.

So, Eric Karr, you have gay family and friends and presumably don't mind being around them or even having your children around them or seeing them, but just some animated gay characters in a movie are "totally outrageous" to you?!! Don't your children get educated about gay people far more by those actual live gay people that they are around so often than by any animated gay characters in a movie that they see one time or occasionally?! But the greater exposure to gayness is acceptable and okay to you, while the one time or occasional exposure to it in a movie is "outrageous" and unacceptable to you! Where is the logic or consistency in that view? It sounds as though you really have a problem with gay people in real life and the rest of the time, too!

I think families should boycott Disney. I’m sure that wasn’t Walt Disney’s dream. To expose children to anything regarding sexuality. What an adult does or doesn’t do is up to them. But don’t ask don’t tell has worked fine in the past. This is predatory and the whole transgender issue is getting out of hand in my opinion. I’m not anti-gay but I AM Pro Balance. We all struggle with the Ain/Soph, but it’s an individual journey.

For Disney, it’s all about the money, make no mistake. However, if this was not a hit-button issue, people would not be debating this and watching these programs to criticize them. whether Disney promotes it or not, there are Differently sexual and differently gendered people. It has been so throughout history. I can’t speak to how these people feel about this subject, but I can only imagine that for such a child, it would be a relief to see a character that mirrored their feelings. Disney is not a Christian business, it is a secular, for profit entity, and it will make programs about whatever kind of characters the public wants to see.

    1. Tom B's Avatar Tom B

Linda...i agree...these people who worry about programs about sexuality should take their objections to the violent video game industry, which does far more harm than the Disney character, which will act to make a few more children comfortable...and to leave the issue to parents, in this world, would be a mistake...teaching that all people are worthy of respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, should be universal...sexual, racial, ethnic, handicap, intellectual bigots only hurt children, by teaching them the opposite of loving and caring... American’s have misread what is happening. It began with POTUS Woodrow Wilson’s efforts to create a “progressive” nation.

In order to be Progressive, you must have victims to care for; and, if the victims don’t exist you must create the group.

America was working its way out of the market crash of 1929. POTUS FDR saw an opportunity to organize workers into camps and create dependence on government. He began the real division of America into classes.

Saul Alinsky, followed by Columbia professors Cloward and Piven took the working model and created Power through Victimization. Robert Kennedy and POTUS LBJ embraced Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals and Created more Victim Groups through their false and dangerous Great Society.

Now, everyone has a victim group they can hide in while the people who define the groups gain power and wealth.

Now they reach into the family and toddlers, forcing tolerance by a biologically ignorant group. Have homosexuals been harmed in the past? Of course. So were Irish and short people. That doesn’t mean we have train our youth to mistrust anyone who is a bigot.

We are all bigoted about something or someone. Let the gay individuals grow up like “The Boy Named Sue” fighting as indivuals with power; not, slaves to the masters of the victim groups created by tyrants of tolerance like George Soros, Slate Magazine, Al Sharpton.

Get out and fight for your self. Be strong and proud, but be You and not THEM.

The hypocrisy of these "Christian groups" is amazing! These are the same people who applauded the uncle who took his niece to see a Disney princess movie and wore a princess outfit to make his niece feel more comfortable. They also find nothing wrong with dads playing "dress up" and allowing their daughters to polish their nails and put make up on them.

Shows like this don't teach kids to be gay or transgender. They DO teach kids tolerance (which a lot of adults on this forum DO NOT have) and to realize that if they feel "different" than what their parents tell them to feel, it's OK...and they're not alone. How many kids have to commit suicide because of intolerant parents or teachers or even strangers? How many are made to feel like freaks? How many parents have denied their sons and daughters simply because they are gay? Aren't parents supposed to love their children unconditionally?

Being straight doesn't mean being moral just as being gay or transgender doesn't mean being immoral.

It comes down to what is "normal." My wife and I can't get over how we were only one year apart in school (same school) and in my class being "gay" means you would probably get beat up. The following year there were same sex couples and one kid openly called himself the "Queen of the school." I believe things move in waves... for example the 60s were free love later 70s through early 90s were more conservative. Then the late 70s early 80s kids grew up and started generation X. Then whatever mid 83 to about 90-92 in the middle and then the milennials 93-95 to current swaying back toward conservative. Same with fashon, trends come and go, but about every decade or so they come around again. Guess you can say people have and will always push boundaries or is it partial parental rebellion, I dont know. What I do know is that without innovation there is no progress...

I find it interesting to ask LGBT people (once I get to know them) 'when do you think you were first attracted to the same sex?' I have asked at least a few dozen over the years and their answer never really changed... "As long as I can remember."

It shows you are who you are born to be. The reason men have nipples is, because we all start female and it isn't until the Y chromosome kicks in that things change.

The world isn't black and white; take a step back and appreciate the "Beauty of Gray." (Excellent song from the band Live)

"Morality" is subjective. "Normal" is subjective. As the saying goes, what is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly. It's not like they're showing kids, or even adults, actually having sex. If you don't like it, don't watch. If you don't know how to explain to your children that love is love then maybe the problem isn't with the equality, the problem is with your point of view. I know all these religions that claim to be about love and acceptance can't get enough hatred and bigotry when it comes to those they don't like, but since pretty much all religions boil down to "Don't be a dick" shouldn't they at least try to pretend they're following their religions?

So many complain about "being forced" to deal with the "gay agenda" and whine about "Progressives." Do you stop to consider how your refusal to even accept some people aren't exactly like you only demonstrates to those children that they aren't loved? How can you expect anyone to believe you love them when you can't accept them for who they are, only who you want them to be?

And that lack of acceptance, along with the constant labeling of LGBT youth as "sick", "sinful", "not normal", "perverted", et al., encourages bullying and even violence against them. Then, the resulting high rate of attempted suicide among that group is cited as evidence that they're "mentally ill".

The indoctrination actually begins with the idea tat the majority should rule. Darwin was right obviously right when he talked about natural selection. However we are living in an age were people of our nation say they are tired of bigotry and hate. If this is true, then we need to shed our gender bending issues, our religious skittishness, and so forth. Why have a name for religion at all...just say, "I believe in a divine power." and be done with it. Does it really need a name and gender. My divine power is gender-less, shapeless, and nameless. It is like air, water, and electricity...They have consistency. They are there. They are shapeless without a container. It (The Divine) is there and that is all I know. Spiritual texts don't do it justice, because none of them come with any proof other than a set of words, which is all they are..just words designed to tell a story and an inaccurate story at that. Science at least has made some headway in explaining some things even if it can't explain everything yet. I trust it more than I trust a few human told stories about God or Goddess. I think we should put our gender issues aside. The world isn't made of just men and women. There are hermaphrodites too. And other types of idiosyncrasies that can't be explained by the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, and so forth. Frogs even change genders, and you don't usually see homo-phobes in frogs. If you did, their species would become extinct.

    1. Lee Conner's Avatar Lee Conner

For those of you who say we might become extinct if we turn a blind eye...given what we do to this world..the destruction we cause...I'm ok with that to spread love and happiness across the globe...but I don't think we will over a minority of people who just want the right to love who they want to love, be what gender they want to be. I was born hermaphrodite...my mom chose for me to be female at birth, so my gender was changed against my will. That makes me a transgender. I don't like she chose my gender, and I don't think anyone should choose anyone else's gender at birth or any other time in their life...What harm is this particular cartoon doing. It is giving kids the idea that they have the right to choose who they are, what they are, and what they want to be. I see nothing wrong with this gender bending cartoon. Heaven forbid we become all that we can be regardless of what others think or feel we should be. For crying out loud. Get your head out of the scriptures and embrace diversity, because the true evil in the world is bigotry, hate, and fear of the unknown. Don't get scared till you see something coming at you with a weapon or killing spirit behind it. That is what Gender benders are afraid of...The same thing witches are afraid of in certain countries..the same thing Christians are afraid of in Muslim countries...fear should be a rational thing, not irrational like the fear of this movie is.

They say "Oh I felt inspired to come out as trans" No kid you watched Sponge Bob and Star verses the forces of evil and now your cross dressing. So I do think this is brainwashing kids.

Why do people insist on calling destructive and/or decadent/hedonistic "progressive"? Just because some older values are being replaced doesn't mean society is making progress. I'm pretty sure some of the ancient Romans tried a lot of the things that are now being called "progressive". That was before they were sacked and the Empire split apart.

I'm not saying the wreckage of the Empire was a punishment from God. It was just a natural outcome of the weakness and decadence of a spoiled society.

I'm not the least bit worried about Disney or the LGBTQ whatever community. I'm worried about people going along with this societal programming being thrust upon us by the media.

No child will ever watch another Disney production under my roof. It's not because I hate those tormented people who do not know what they are, or have been made to feel they are in the wrong body. I don't. I feel for them. I just don't think it is in any way intelligent to try to make children OR adults think it is normal to feel that way. It is not. It may be normal for some people, but it is not normal for a society, and it is a heinous sin like child abuse or pedophilia for adults to allow that kind of thing to be taught to children who are NOT part of a family directly connected to it.

I know some of you will say my attitude is primitive, but I support true progress, not what is called "progressive". That is a flat lie, and a wonderful example of how the communists call things the opposite of what they are (like "smart" cars) or accuse their opponents of doing the exact thing the communists are doing, to deflect guilt off themselves.

The LGBT community are not screwed up in the head. Our ways are not destructive or hedonistic. We are not confused. We just don't want to be exactly like you who is screwed up in the head and think that we should conform to your way of thinking. I was born an Intersexual. I was born a hermaphrodite. My mom made the choice to remove my extra appendage and make me a transgender technically. I understand what transgenders born in the wrong body feel like. I want to be what I was when I was born, but in your eyes, I wouldn't be normal. GOOD I don't want to be your idea of normal. I want to be me...not what you want me to be. Stop judging others through your spiritual books. they don't tell it like it is. There is a great world out there beyond what spirituality tries to depict. Try to embrace the new stuff that is defined as wrong by spiritual texts, that can be proven good and right. It might make your life a little happier than trying to look through a microscope and turn everything that doesn't match your spiritual teachings into something that does by removing the actual natural world of things.

Conner, no one is judging you here, and you just as much as said you are not normal and have no desire to be normal. If you were the norm, we wouldn't be having this discussion at all. In the natural world, there are many things normal, and there are anomalies. Dinoflagellates are not normal all over the ocean. You know, green eyes are somewhat an anomaly, depending on one's ethnicity and geography. Some people are attracted to green eyes. It is not the norm (depending on tribe and location) to be less than five feet tall, and some people are attracted to those smaller people. We do not try to make children think it is normal for people to be less than five feet tall after adulthood. That is not discriminatory. That is an acknowledgement of nature, and not a spiritual teaching. In fact, I submit that it is a BETTER and MORE ACCURATE acknowledgement of nature than what you are espousing.
