Universal Life Church Sues State of Tennessee to Protect Online Ordination

Transcription

A church based out of Seattle Washington is suing to block Tennessee's new rules on who can perform marriages. That law takes effect July 1st and it blocks those common online ordinations that allow friends or anyone who completes the program to give those vows.

On June 21st, the Universal Life Church sued the state of Tennessee. Tennessee sought to prevent internet-ordained ministers from officiating weddings. The new lax is in direct violation of the first and fourteenth amendments. On July 3rd, a federal judge granted a restraining order to temporarily block the law. The ULC is committed to defending the rights of all of our ministers.

Universal Life Church Press Release: "America was founded largely on the idea that people should feel free to worship as they see fit. Tennessee’s attempt to curtail these rights for our ministers simply because they became ordained via the internet is illegal and unconscionable."
