March 2014 Newsletter

The Catholic observance of Lent is upon us and many believers are pondering what sinful distractions to give up during their time of purification... but not before throwing one of the biggest parties in the world: Mardi Gras!

We will cover the history and meaning of this deliciously sinful holiday in this issue, but not before addressing a topic that is paramount for us as ministers - religious liberty.

This last week, Arizona came close to enacting a measure that would give religious people special rights.

Bill 1062 would have allowed employees to deny services to anyone on the grounds of a religious objection. Governor Jan Brewer (R) vetoed the bill, nicknamed "Turn Away the Gays."

Tuesday, March 4th is Mardi Gras, also known as Carnival.

Revelers will take to the streets and party in one last hurrah before the Catholic observance of Lent and the abstinence from indulgences it brings.

Read all about Carnival here.

Mardi Gras is famous for celebration and debauchery. Gluttony, lust, greed, and pride are on full display one day before Catholics enter a time of repentance and cleansing of these "deadly sins."

But what is a "deadly sin?"

Find out in the start of our latest sermon series, the Seven Deadly Sins.

During Lent, Catholics make an extra effort to give up bad or sinful behavior in preparation for Easter. Being greedy is one such vice.

There is more wrong with greed than you might initially think.

We are right in the middle of tax season. If you have ministry expenses or run your own church, we highly recommend these two tax and financial guides.

As Arthur Godfrey put it, "I'm proud to pay taxes in the United States; the only thing is, I could be just as proud for half the money." Make sure you save this year with these two books.

Dusty Hoesly, a fellow ULC Minister and a graduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is conducting a survey for his dissertation research on the Universal Life Church.

If you've been ordained by the ULC or married by a ULC minister, we encourage you to take the survey. The survey is entirely secure, anonymous, and should only take 15-20 minutes to complete.

If you can't do it now, please give yourself a reminder so you remember to do it later!
