President Trump is calling on Americans to lift their voices in prayer over the coming year ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
The initiative, called America Prays, was launched by President Trump at a recent event at the Museum of the Bible.
“We will never surrender our God-given rights; we will defend our liberties, our values, our sovereignty, and we will defend our freedom,” said Trump at the event. “And with the help of amazing faith communities across the land… we will truly make this the golden age of America.”
Faith groups are cheering this idea, but not everyone is thrilled about the White House edict.
The America Prays Initiative

On its website, the White House explains the initiative in more detail. Specifically, here's what it says:
The Ask: What if one million Americans dedicated one hour a week to praying for our country and our people?
The Invitation: Will you join with at least 10 people to meet each week for one hour to pray for America?
The Opportunity: As we celebrate 250 years of freedom, this is an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the principles that gave birth to this land of liberty. As George Washington famously said in his Farewell Address, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.”
This dedicated time of prayer is not only for our nation, but for its people because a nation is only as strong as its citizens.
One Sided Prayer?
Critics of the event point out that, for one, the prayer blitz is unapologetically Christian.
The White House website has recommendations for specific Christian scripture to open weekly prayer meetings. Their partner organizations are all Christian. And their 17 historical prayer examples, demonstrating faith’s formative role in American history, are Christian.
From George Washington’s faith-filled orders to implement church services in military units, to Benjamin Franklin’s prayer at the Constitutional Convention, to Martin Luther King Jr.’s prayers for racial justice, the initiative paints a picture of an America where public and private life revolved around faith – and that faith was overwhelmingly Christian.
“America has always been a nation that believes in the power of prayer,” Trump stated at the event at the Museum of the Bible. “And we will never apologize for our faith. Ever, ever, never, never. We will never surrender our God-given rights.”
Is This an Endorsement of Christianity?
Secular advocates are outraged, calling this a direct endorsement of Christianity by the federal government.
David Cole, former legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, says that the initiative may fly in the face of the Constitution, which prohibits the government from favoring one faith over another. It “raises serious constitutional questions,” he explained, stating that it “is directly in violation of, at a minimum, the spirit of the establishment clause.”
“What does this say to a Muslim, a Hindu, a Jew, an agnostic?” Cole pondered. “It tells them they are outsiders.”
“This commission isn’t about religious liberty; it’s about rejecting the nation’s religious diversity and prioritizing one set of Christian beliefs,” wrote Americans United for Separation of Church and State in a fiery rebuke.
“President Trump is using religion to promote his self-aggrandizement and political agenda, all the while perpetuating the lie that America is a Christian nation and that religion is under attack.”
On the other hand, many faith groups were thrilled by the announcement.

I will preface this by saying that I am not a fan of Trump. I never have been and never will be!
I am a Pagan and have had backlash towards me the first time he was elected and now once again by those who follow him. If prayer will soften their hearts toward those who are different then I would support that. But if it is to elevate their beliefs over others then I doubt they will share grace with those who are not Christian.
Every morning when I close my meditation, I close it with what is a Buddhist Metta Prayer. It is simple but words carry energy. For those who may be interested in a simple but meaningful sentiment it is as follows: May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I be at peace.

Mr. Pagan, here is what I think is an interesting thought. While your Buddhist sound appealing to many, I hear a lot of I when applied to you ( as the person ). I can see why Paganism has had a resurgence of interest with the non-religious. It services the self above all things. I am reminded of the Jewish/ Christian teach about the " I Am ". Their God teaches a prostration before him because of his Holy Holy Holiness. They teach not just a complete reverence but a complete " dying to oneself not just in his presence but daily, hourly, even with every breath a person breaths. This seems to surrender the " I " and produces a degree of submission to a higher authority ( God ). This is why " others " come first with these faith groups. The are admonished to " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you ". Can you imagine a culture or a world that the " I " is not glorified? Wow! What a world of difference that would make for everyone ( believers or not ).

The problem is that the White House only features Christian prayers, reinforcing the false idea that we are a Christian nation. Our founders included the Establishment Clause precisely to prevent the government from endorsing one religion over others.

Jamestown was founded by people looking for non-existent Gold and had to settle for timber and pelts. Plymouth was founded by Congregationalists who could not convince the rest of England and the Netherlands to worship the way they demanded, and demanded the 55% of the colonists who were NOT Congregationalists to worship as Congregationalists. Massachusetts Bay/Salem was founded by Puritans who couldn't stand that England allowed any type of worship folks wanted to follow (as long as it wasn't Papist). When Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colonies merged, only Congregationalists were allowed to hold office. Rhode Island was founded by outcasts from Plymouth and Salem who decided that the Church and State should be separate. New Netherlands (now New York) was founded by Dutch merchants looking for the northern passage to Asia and settled the lands along the Hudson, Mohawk and Connecticut Rivers. They didn't care who wanted to worship what, and allowed Reformed, Lutherans, Catholics, Anglicans, Jews. etc. Connecticut (Wethersfield and Windsor) was founded by Congregationalists encroaching onto land already claimed by the Dutch. New Sweden (New Jersey and Delaware) were settled by Swedes looking to set up trade. Lutherans only need apply. Pennsylvania, although set up by Quakers, was established with Freedom of Religion. Maryland was founded as a Refuge for Catholics. After the Revolutionary War, the state legislature (under control of the Episcopalians) made it illegal for Catholics to hold office. North and South Carolina had laws restricting office holders to Anglicans, as did Virginia. Georgia was a penal colony for Scot and Irish Catholics. So tell me again about this being a Christian Nation?

As one who is a constant critic of the Trump agenda, since the event where this originated was at an event at the "Museum of the Bible" (assuming it was the Christian Bible), it was an appropriate way to blend "his faith tradition" into the event. That said, setting or suggesting a mandate that the rest of the country do the same, crosses a line. I would never expect a President to deny God or Jesus when speaking in a church or to a church affiliated organization, but at the same time, Trump seems to have no concept of where he is most of the time. I would also expect no less from a president that hails from a different religion. Jefferson was a deist, and made no bones about it. He is the one who gave us separation of church and state.
Another beef I have is with those that call the Constitution, and specifically the Bill of Rights, our "God given rights." What they don't understand is that this is an oxymoron, because one of those rights is freedom of religion, including the belief that there is no God [aka freedom from religion].
One other thing, have you ever heard the saying, "be careful what you pray for, because you just might get it?" If millions of people pray for this country, and God decides to intervene, how God interprets what we want and what DJT wants may be different.

Once there is one religious sect, governing the lives of a whole country, chaos begins. History shows so many acts of cruelty that were 'justified' by religious zealots. Most of these so called leaders do not follow their scripture, but their own agendas. And they can rationalize any vicious act as their religious duty. I have studied many religions. Today our president is restoring law and order. He is repairing near lethal damage caused by my last president. He is asking us Christian’s to pray for our nation.
If President Biden asked me to pray for my nation, I definitely would even though the man supports chopping babies up in the womb encourages lawlessness and is a pervert with kids. By the way, I did pray for the nation when Biden was my President. Loads of Christians did the same thing.
Then President Trump was elected. Our prayers were apparently answered, thank God.

At last, these issues are now being put in check. Law and order is slowly being returned. Some of the leaders in the House didn’t even want a moment of silence recently after Charlie’s Kirk’s assassination. Karen Bass, of California, instructed for no flags to be at half mast. I personally think the liberal left are panicking wondering where their next success is going to be coming from. The Charlie Kirk debacle could actually be the final nail in the coffin for the Democrat party, so we will just have to wait and see what the electorate thinks at the next elections over the next 3 years.

No, Lionheart, I don’t think any of this is funny. Your eagerness to blame Democrats for the tragic death of a far-right political operative is telling. Democrats did not carry out this attack—it was the act of a disturbed individual who deserves to face justice.
I also don’t think flags should have been flown at half-mast. That honor belongs to presidents and government dignitaries, not to divisive media figures. Kirk was a polarizing personality who thrived on driving wedges between Americans. He had every right to speak his views, but it’s absurd to imply that an entire political party is responsible for his death.
Both sides are guilty of politicizing tragedies. When Paul Pelosi was attacked, some Republicans spread cruel conspiracies. When Minnesota’s Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were murdered, some mocked it, and the President dismissed calls for support.
This shouldn’t be about scoring points. It’s about recognizing that violence, hate, and division are problems we all must condemn—together. Until we do, tragedies like this will only keep happening and be weaponized for political gain.

Assuming Jesus was real, it would be nice to know what exactly he ever really said. It’s a shame that all we have in the bible are words he is supposed to have said, handed down as here-say, and written by historians decades later that never met him.
As for praying for him to go away, you might be interested in knowing that the efficacy of prayer has been studied since 1872 with no demonstrable evidence of that practice ever having any real effect. But not to worry, there is only 3+ years to go before the next election, but fortunately, it’s looking very likely his policies are paying off, being as it looks as though we are not heading towards a recession that many thought would happen under President Trump, so we might find a conservative government will be elected once again. Let’s all hope America becomes great and profitable once again like it used to be. I’m sure that’s what we all would like to see.
