A poster known as mortar Jesus
"People should be court-martialed for allowing this," said the head of a watchdog group.

A black-and-white poster showing Jesus firing a mortar round was recently discovered inside a U.S. Army battalion headquarters at an undisclosed overseas installation. It’s the latest incident amid an ongoing controversy about religious zealotry in the U.S. military.

The discovery was reported to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), a nonprofit organization that advocates for the constitutional right of military personnel to be free from unwanted religious influence.

According to MRFF President and Founder Mikey Weinstein, displaying the poster in a shared common area is a clear violation of Pentagon guidelines – and he isn't mincing words about it.

"People should be court-martialed for allowing this," Weinstein said.

How Did It Get There?

A whistleblower reached out to the MRFF after a combat battalion rotated into a base and discovered the poster left behind by the previous unit. In a redacted email shared with reporters, the service member described finding the image in a high-traffic work area.

Weinstein compared the location to Times Square and "the bridge of the starship Enterprise." In other words, this was no private soldier's locker decoration. High-ranking officers would have passed through that space regularly, meaning the poster was either seen and permitted, or seen and ignored.

The image itself appears to have originated in May 2025, when it was shared on a military humor account that regularly posts comedic or unusual content from Army life. That suggests the original intent may have been satirical. But as Weinstein noted, Pentagon regulations don't make exceptions for satire when it comes to sectarian religious displays.

The original poster featured a quote from Matthew 7:1 – "Do not judge, or you too will be judged" – printed above the image of a militarized Jesus. The mixing of scripture, irreverence, and weaponry makes for an image that is equal parts provocative and theologically confusing, to say the least.

A Pattern, or an Isolated Incident?

What makes this discovery especially noteworthy is the broader context in which it emerged. Recent whistleblower reports accused U.S. military commanders of describing God taking a side in the conflict and have even invoked apocalyptic biblical prophecy in framing the mission to their troops.

A group of lawmakers has called on the Pentagon's inspector general to investigate those allegations – a sign that concern over religious influence in the military has moved well beyond a single rogue poster.

Meanwhile, the nation's top military civilian has made no secret of his personal faith. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has instituted a monthly military prayer service aligned with his evangelical Protestant beliefs, participated in a White House Bible study, and moved to relax guidelines designed to prevent military chaplains from crossing into sectarian territory.

"The providence of our almighty God is there protecting those troops," Hegseth said publicly in a recent interview.

Critics argue that when leadership at the highest levels expresses views like that, displays like "Mortar Jesus" should not be surprising. But does that mean it’s okay?

Evidently, many are in an undeveloped Yaldabaoth stage, to post and allow the poster. Even the uproar fits this diagnosis. I even attribute my own initial reaction to that.

I think the motivations to this war are all Yaldabaoth. Angra Mainyu. An unbalanced mind across masses, an unbalanced egregore.

But I keep getting a tugging within that says it's the disaster that leads to clarifying the State of Israel into an ended statehood, but wider grasp that Israel is not a state, not a land, but a people, with a far more conscious grasp than the Councils toward creating a canon ever allowed, even pre-Christian, or than Balfour could have feared.

A time of awakening is afoot. The sovereign individual is awakening, personal sovereignty is gaining traction. And we'll see the fulfillment of many scriptures far and wide, known and hidden. Not exactly because of this war and its antecedents, but with it as a pulse within that eventuality.

p.s. No one 'fires' a mortar like that. Jesus is obviously protecting the Mortar Men and American Soldiers with His Blessing. BILL OF RIGHTS : USA soldiers fight for their God & Country so the image of Christ protecting a Mortar Crew is not only LEGAL, it is why we fight to defend our U.S. Constitution and BILL OF RIGHTS.

The unfortunate uneducated MRFF staff speak from military inexperience & quite literally have no idea what they are talking about. I would caution them to NEVER sit witha Mortar launching from the face at point blank range as shown in the prayer painting.

Even well experienced Mortar teams can lose their Fingers - TORN OFF by a mortar round that Cooks off way too fast - or even lose their lives if the Mortar malfunctions and explodes. :-(

There is a growing confusion in the world today between faith and control, and nowhere is that more dangerous than when it appears in places of authority.

Recently, a report surfaced of a military workspace displaying an image of Jesus engaged in warfare. This is not a small issue. It reflects a deeper misunderstanding that has been building for generations, the merging of man’s ideas of power with the image of the Creator.

Jesus did not come as a symbol of violence, conquest, or domination. He did not lead armies. He did not command weapons. He stood as a teacher of truth, discipline, restraint, and inner transformation. When His image is repurposed into something else, it is no longer truth being represented, it is projection.

This is the problem with what can be called “man’s religion.” It reshapes what is sacred into something that justifies human behavior instead of correcting it. It turns the Creator into a tool rather than recognizing Him as the source.

Faith is not meant to be weaponized. It is meant to refine the individual, not empower institutions to blur the line between belief and authority.

When belief systems are mixed with power structures, the result is confusion. And confusion leads people further away from truth, not closer to it.

If we are going to speak about God, then we need to be precise. The Creator is not aligned with human agendas, politics, or warfare. The Creator is not something to be stamped onto actions after the fact to justify them.

Truth does not need force. It stands on its own.

This is a moment to step back and ask a simple question: are we following what is true, or are we following what has been shaped for us?

There is a difference, and it matters.

The discovery of the “Mortar Jesus” poster within a U.S. Army battalion headquarters presents a complex issue that can be viewed through several distinct lenses. Far more than a simple joke gone awry, the incident serves as a flashpoint for intersecting debates on leadership, religious expression, and military culture. Analyzing it through different frameworks reveals not only why the poster was problematic, but also how the reaction to it is just as layered and significant as the image itself.

From a Human Resources perspective, this is a classic case study in the principle of “Intent vs. Impact.” The previous unit that displayed the poster likely intended it as satire or an inside joke, fostering a sense of in-group cohesion. Within their bubble, the intent was benign. However, the impact on the incoming, diverse unit was profoundly different. The poster was not seen as a joke but as an exclusionary symbol that damaged psychological safety, creating an environment where a service member felt compelled to go to an outside watchdog rather than their own chain of command. In any professional setting, and especially the military, impact must always outweigh intent, and the impact here was unequivocally negative.

Biblically, the image is deeply problematic for mainstream Christian theology. While it is true the Old Testament contains numerous references to a "God of Armies" who commands battles and smites foes, the central Christian message revolves around the "New Covenant" established by Jesus Christ. He is presented as the "Prince of Peace" whose kingdom is "not of this world" and is not advanced by physical violence. The poster commits a theological error by retroactively applying the warrior imagery of the Old Testament to Jesus, thereby inverting the core Christian message of self-sacrifice and turning the other cheek. It confuses the spiritual battle against evil with a physical, earthly one.

The regulatory lens provides the clearest and most objective condemnation. Just for transparency I served 23 years in an Army uniform and so I might have a bit of a clouded lens on this front. Though the regulations are clear, the nuance is lost in the MRFF judgement. Under Army Regulation 600-20 (Army Command Policy), commanders are mandated to foster a climate of dignity and respect, free from religious discrimination. Placing a sectarian religious image in a high-traffic common area violates this duty, as it implies command endorsement and creates an environment hostile to the military’s exceptional diversity. Mikey Weinstein’s assertion that "People should be court-martialed" is, in itself, a rhetorical mortar round. While legally plausible under articles of the UCMJ, its primary function is to be as inflammatory as the poster, forcing an institutional response. In a curious irony, by demanding the harshest possible penalty, he is imposing a severe judgment in response to an image that originally quoted, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

For me, ultimately, viewed through the lens of the Universal Life Church, we champion radical inclusivity and the belief that we are all children of the same universe, the entire episode is a test of community. Do that which is right, a standard that both the poster and the acrimonious response arguably fail to meet. A community that truly values every member, regardless of their personal path or belief system, would neither display an image that alienates nor resort to threats of severe punishment to make a point. I believe that is what ULC means to me, seeking understanding and common ground. The "Mortar Jesus" incident, from its creation to its condemnation, highlights a profound lack of both, serving as a cautionary tale, and at times we need those.

The Secretary of Defense has a couple of problems. One is his documented history of alcohol abuse. This explains his tendency to "shoot from the hip" and not provide understandable explanations to anything. Another is his history of Sexual Predation and Abuse. Note he has removed every woman from every position of authority in the DoD. Another is his documented White Supremacy. In addition to women, he has removed every person of color and non-Christian he can find from their positions of authority, whether civilian or uniformed. Finally, and most troubling, is his Christian Nationalism. His actions remind me of those post Reformation princes who were convinced that THEIR version of G_d was on their side, and their side only! Many of them are driven by the desire to force their interpretation of Armageddon from the Revelations to bring about the Rapture. The future he sees is one where 95% of the country would be 2nd class citizens or lower, where women would not be allowed to vote and have the men in their lives make all their decisions for them. Where you would need a Passport to travel outside of your designated location.

The book has been edited more times than we will ever know. How much was removed that was first put in? ... look at modern times as proof of human behavior. We all know how George Floyd was idolized after his death. We all know he died from OD and not the police, but the version of him that screams the loudest, will prevail. So to suggest he would not do that, also suggests that his "followers" should not/would not do that too. If so, there would be no military if every Christian refused to pick up arms.. because "allegedly" Jesus would not have either.

RECALL the Great Multitude are COVERED IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS - so no one woild even see their tattoos. Additionally, Their ROBES ARE WASHED WHITE IN THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB. So, most likely, if the robes are made white and clean in Christ's BLOOD, then tattoos are washed away as the NEW HEAVENLY BODY is completely free from defects, scars, ampitaions, and any disabilities.

MRFF is wrong to incorrectly assume Christ is operating a mortar in his face from his lap.

      Nobody does that.

Jesus is protecting the mortar men team from injury.

Since Christians, Muslims and Jews all worship the same God, who do you suppose He/She is rooting for?!?

    1. ServantOfJudgement's Avatar ServantOfJudgement

Naw, the Jewish and Christian God forbid lying. Allah and Satan permit it. Not the same dude dude.

You can put your blinders back on now, it's safe.

There you go again, SoJ…Allah doesn’t permit lying and Satan is a figment of your imagination. Best of luck with your spiritual journey!

        1. ServantOfJudgement's Avatar ServantOfJudgement

Islam permits lying during war, to keep peace with the wife and to reconcile with another person. Islam is always at war and therefore can always lie.

As far as God and Satan go, they may not be real, nobody knows. Their philosophical personality is definitely real. When one picks up a philosophy of death destruction it should paid attention to by those of us who are willing to see reality.

Paula, it doesn't matter if you don't believe in these things. The people who execute gays do and they act on it.

Thanks for the good luck wishes.

      2. Joseph Grieco's Avatar Joseph Grieco

Hey, SoJ, here's a little reminder. Satan, or properly ha-Shatana (aka The Advocate), was an angel appointed by G_d to test the faith of his followers by either visiting plagues on them or tempting them. Those who fall to temptation have failed.

        1. ServantOfJudgement's Avatar ServantOfJudgement

          Mr Grieco,

Satan means accuser. Jesus is our advocate, not Satan. You've either intentionally inverted the two by putting Satan in the place of Jesus or your source of information is full-on bogus and you're being terribly deceived.

    2. Christian's Avatar Christian

Christ is protecting the Mortar Men - they can lose fingers or die suddenly if the device malfunctions.

Obviously Mr.Jesus is not OPERATING the mortar - no one sits with their face right by the Tube & launching from their lap in a sitting position.

Obviously the prayerful painting is FULLY protected FREE SPEECH in our Bill of Rights 1st Amendment - which military are sworn to protect and defend from ALL enemies both foreign and domestic. One Nation Under God. IN GOD WE TRUST. Jesus Saves ! :-)

Just as the love is love crowd doesn't know a thing about jesus and his 780,000 word message, so it's true about the person who hung that poster.

You may as well print a picture of jesus with a scalpel cutting out a baby and hang it next to this one.

    The picture is disgusting.

    1. Joseph Grieco's Avatar Joseph Grieco

SoJ, as a reminder, the Book of Numbers is the only place that specifically addresses abortion, and it's the instruction on how to terminate a pregnancy - either unwanted because of rape or medically necessary to save the life of the mother. Yeheshua bar Yosef preached The Law.

      1. ServantOfJudgement's Avatar ServantOfJudgement

Mr Grieco, I wish I didn't have to constantly correct Christians over cutting babies from the womb. I'm assuming you're a Christian. I understand the atheist won't comprehend the bible but come on Christian friends.

Please read numbers again. It's right there in black and white. It's even in English.

It's a form of judgement/punishment Joseph, not willful abortion. Geez. God, not man determines and reveals if a suspected adulterer is an adulterer.

You sure did ADD quite a bit to numbers friend, be careful about false teaching.

Back just after 911 there was an image of Jesus shoving a RPG up Osama Ben Ladins' butt Originating on a military chat site (in the ancient days of Internet). No one complained then in fact most so called Christians supported it and passed it on. This is tame in comparison.

Jesus is my saviour. When I drive down the road he is in the vehicle with me, he is my insurance and assurance that if the worst happens he is with me and I'm good. It was the same way while I served in the US ARMY, Jesus was my "Battle Buddy". So while Him firing a mortar is offensive to some, especially to the people that have never served, it can also stand as a reminder to those in a warzone, that they are not alone. Also on a constitutional level a person was expressing themselves, constitutionally protected act, and others call for court martials. NEWS ALERT...Their rights don't stop where your feelings start. If it offends you look away. If it is an issue in the battalion building they take it down.

I guess it’s only considered disrespectful to those people of that particular faith. I wonder if Christian’s would feel it was disrespectful if they saw a black and white poster of the supposed Prophet Muhammad firing a mortar, which would be a big no-no in the Islamic faith? 🤔

    🦁❤️

    1. Joseph Grieco's Avatar Joseph Grieco

Muslims would consider it blasphemy to have any depiction of the Prophet. So it wouldn't happen in any Islamic state or organization without facing a Fatwa for their actions.

    2. ServantOfJudgement's Avatar ServantOfJudgement

No lionheart is not feel it was disrespectful to see Mo behind a rocket. I expect that's what the average islamist thinks when he blows up people having a picnic on the beach. They should plaster England with such a picture. I hear the natives are having a difficult time adjusting to Muslim life.

I apologize for saying Mo, I should have said You Know Who...
