Was "Witchy Wednesday" appropriate for school?

A Florida school district is shutting down its “Witchy Wednesday” morning program following complaints from Christian students that it unfairly promoted Paganism and witchcraft.

The mid-week announcements were dreamed up by students at West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida, offering tidbits on all things mystical, from moon phases to incense burning. One program even walked students through casting a so-called “spell of enlightenment.”

But after Christian students cried foul – and demanded equal time to share their own beliefs – “Witchy Wednesday” was finished almost as soon as it began.

Witchy Wednesday

“Good morning, witches,” opened the September 10 “Witchy Wednesday” program. “I am here to guide you through your magical midweek journey every Wednesday,” the announcer read, before informing students on when the next full moon is and launching into their first ever 'Witch Tip Spotlight’.

The programs were originally filmed and uploaded to YouTube and were piped into classrooms every Wednesday morning, though none of the programs are viewable any longer. That’s because members of the West Orange High School community reached out to Liberty Counsel, a conservative watchdog group, who sent the school a letter urging them to change the program – and quick.

The Inevitable Legal Pushback

Citing recent Supreme Court precedent in Mahmoud v. Taylor (which requires religious students an opt-out for school instruction clashing with their faith), Liberty Counsel urged the school to provide Christian students the option to opt-out of hearing the morning “Witchy Wednesday” announcements.

They went further, however, invoking the infamous praying coach Supreme Court case – Kennedy v. Bremerton School District – to insist that if witchcraft programming was allowed, equal time for Christian students to present their faith must be offered as well.

Faced with the threat of legal escalation or massive alterations to the program, the district chose the path of least resistance: shutting “Witchy Wednesday” down entirely.

A Brief History of Witch Hysteria

The cancellation of "Witchy Wednesday" is just the latest chapter in America's complicated and hostile relationship with witchcraft.

The story of witch persecution in America begins most infamously with the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. In Puritan New England, fear of the devil mixed with strict Christian teachings created the perfect storm for mass hysteria. In less than a year, accusations of witchcraft spread rapidly throughout colonial Massachusetts, fueled by a belief that witches were in league with Satan and sought to undermine the Christian community.

Women were often targeted – particularly women who practiced herbalism, folk healing, or spiritualism outside of mainstream Christian tradition. Before the frenzy subsided, more than 200 people had been accused, and at least 25 were executed or died in jail. These trials stand as one of the darkest chapters in American religious history, a vivid reminder of what can happen when religious zeal collides with fear and suspicion.

Far from a thing of the past, fears over witchcraft exist even today. Just as Puritans once saw witches as Satan’s agents threatening their godly community, modern critics of Harry Potter saw author J.K. Rowling’s fictional witches and wizards as undermining biblical authority.

Churches across the country held book burnings, pastors warned parents that spells described in the novels could summon demonic forces, and schools faced pressure to remove Harry Potter from their libraries. Though the stakes were no longer life or death, the outrage showed how deeply witchcraft, whether practiced, suspected, or imagined, still has the power to trigger moral panic in a nation where Christianity has long dominated public life.

The Role of Faith in the Classroom

The quick rise and fall of “Witchy Wednesday” raises bigger questions about the role of religion in schools.

Should public schools allow students to share spiritual or religious content during announcements, or does that blur the line between education and endorsement of belief? And was “Witchy Wednesday” really a serious exercise in the Pagan faith… or just kids having some spiritual fun?

But perhaps most importantly: should schools be spaces where religion and spirituality are openly discussed, or should the classroom remain a strictly secular zone?

What is your reaction?

I’m a witch. Paganism, like any other belief system, has NO place in the education system. Separation of church and state means everyone.

And by logical extension I suppose you also would relegate the Christian prayers, displays of the 10 Commanments, prayer at sporting events, displays of Christan messaging on school sport uniforms, and proselytizing by students teachers and coaches to off campus clubs or club groups only for interested students?

Fair is fair. I do not believe religion or politics belong in our schools. Teach our young how to think, not what to think. If you allow one group to present it's beliefs, then you must allow all.

I'm usually the guy who wants to keep religion out of public places, off jersey's, out of schools, etc. Keep it at home or in the church of your choosing. But I'm not sure if a "religion" is being promoted here. Talking about the moon, burning incense, casting a (harmless) spell, looking at a crystal ball - it sounds like kids play-acting after watching a spooky movie. (Harry Potter? Oh No!)

Of course in Ron's Florida, the moon, movies & comic books, incense, lots of library books and covid shots are all problematic. (Of course open carry of guns just passed there. No problem, huh?)

There are religious beliefs and religious acts. Burning incense is no different than lighting a candle in church. Yes, Rev, it is religion, whether you like it or not. Who are you to tell me what religious acts are valid in my own religion?

Peace Lady Mutt Cat. I never said anything about "what acts are valid in your religion", or "whether I liked it or not". A curiously indignant reply to what I actually said. 5 people (so far) seemed to understand my non-accusatory remarks.

As a minister and constitutional advocate, I find the cancellation of “Witchy Wednesday” deeply concerning—not for its theme, but for what it signals about student rights and spiritual equity. The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech and the free exercise of religion. In Tinker v. Des Moines (1969), the Supreme Court affirmed that students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

Florida Statutes §1003.44 further protect students’ rights to express religious beliefs in assignments and activities, provided they do not disrupt the educational environment. If Christian students may celebrate their faith, Pagan or spiritual students must be equally respected.

Halloween, at its heart, is a celebration of imagination, mystery, and cultural tradition. To suppress student-led programming that honors this spirit—especially when rooted in peaceful expression—is to miss an opportunity for learning and inclusion.

As Scripture reminds us: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” (Matthew 7:1). Let us not fear the costumes or symbols, but instead embrace the deeper lesson: that all paths to understanding deserve space. In the spirit of the season, may we treat all students with dignity—and never trick them out of their rights.

I'm not a fan of any school sponsored religious events for any religion, as the school is a place for learning. The religious education (with the exception of parochial schools).belongs in the churches and families. On the other hand, if the students want to gather together around a shared interest before or after school, that should be an option. There are arts clubs, chess clubs, and athletic programs, so a group of kids wanting to spend a little time with some scripture or praying, what is the harm? However, if it is religious, it needs to be outside any school sponsored activity and limited to a short time, and possibly a classroom or spot on the lawn or bleachers in the stadium when there are no other activities going on.

The first amendment states "Congress shall make no law" school administration being a bunch of jerks is not Congress making a law; That's personal opinions. Stopping students from freely doing something is bullying plain and simple. Forcing Christianity on others is no different than when christians came stormtroopering across the globe murdering people because they were different. If the hypocrite people calling themselves "Christian" truly follow the Bible then as the Bible says form a counsel of 12 elders from the 12 tribes and a trial to prove they are a witch then stone them to death with 12 identical stones. Otherwise back off and let the American citizen worship how they wish. As Franklin Graham said at a sermon I attended, "Evangelize Don't crucify".

When catholics / christians and others of that ilk start screaming I don't know the bible, I was born and raised Roman Catholic and broke away from the church at age 15, I always ask certain questions that inevitably get under their skin. And usually anger them to where they either swing at me, or walk away angrily.

      1) In the first book with Adam and Eve, if there were NO other people besides them in the entire world, then why was Caine so terrified of leaving saying they'd be killed if others found them. And then they moved away and lived with other peoples? Who were the other people? Where'd they come from if no others were before the two? If they were ALL born from the first two, then they'd ALL be his brothers and sisters, no?

      2) The "god" of the bible always says "he" but does anyone KNOW if it was a "he" or a "she" or gender neutral? And they speak of "Making humans in our image" Ok so that mean there was more than one "god" there?

      3) If there was ONLY Noah and his family left after the Great Flood, and ALL land animals died save for the ones on the arc, then who did the family wed? Since we know incest causes genetic issues, why did that not occur? And how did certain animals get to the right area if they could not swim or fly?

They go "god did it" and I say "You're saying he physically took two of each animal and lifted them over there?" LOL

Among other logic questions. They hate that.

Favoritism of any particular religion does not belong ion the classroom. In this case, this is not happening. The students are organizing a club. They should be encouraged to do so, debating clubs, football clubs, musical instrument learning clubs, and of course Witchcraft clubs. If the teachers are asked for opinions about any of these clubs outside of class hours, they have a free speech right to answer.

      Shango,

With respect, I would like to share my opinion with you. I have practiced most religions as part of walking my path and I have chosen to walk with all. That is why I am here at ULC. Promoting all, protecting all...and of course still trying to learn them all. So many different but lovely ways to interact with the divine consciousness we all seek.

That being said, this was not a club. This was a morning announcement program called “Witchy Wednesday" that covered topics like lunar cycles and spellcraft. The students didn't have a choice whether they heard it or not. And it is just as unconstitutional as there being a morning announcement program that covered topics from Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Satanism or any other religion UNLESS all of the religions/religious traditions are represented. The Atheists must also be included in some way into a secularized version of the holiday in order to provide full equity.

So this is much more than just a club that meets. These were daily announcements broadcast to every student in school. That is not in line with our constitution as I discussed in my own post. And whereas all people want freedom to practice and freedom from others proselytizing actions, there must be equity for all. Which means that schools remain neutral and devise secular decorations and activities so all can feel included in school holiday activities.

Agree, let people do what they will outside school. We have the right to enjoy life. I also think of the atheist, all these religious rights are not afforded to them. Any right afford to any religion is automatically given to anyone not of that religion. It should be this way but it's not.

  1. August Tenacity Wanderingthought's Avatar August Tenacity Wanderingthought

Public schools generally cannot put up purely Christian decorations during Christmas, instead they use secular or multi-faith holiday displays that include all the religious symbols of the various cultures and religions that celebrate the winter holidays. This is due to the First Amendment's separation of church and state.

Schools typically display secular decorations for Halloween too, like pumpkins, representations of witches and costumes, but not overtly Pagan symbols despite the Pagan roots of some traditions. This is due to the same reason.

So a school-approved activity led by students to share mystical beliefs and practices like casting a spell would be unconstitutional in public school; also due to the First Amendment's separation of church and state.

Giving a sermon is a Christian ritual. Casting a spell is a Pagan ritual. Neither is allowed in public school due to their violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment which requires the school to remain neutral on religious matters.

Equity is of utmost importance in this situation. Fair is fair and we all agree that religion doesn't belong in public schools. Secular education belongs in public schools.

  1. Rev. Christine's Avatar Rev. Christine

Rev. Christine As Mom, and an Occultist I truly believe that there should be no religious ideologies in school no matter what the context is. There are private schools (or homeschooling) for religion that one could go to, public schools are not the place. The education that is taught in public school is less than optimal to begin with, adding context such as religion or beliefs of any sort is only taking that much more away from these children. There is a proper time and place for such things, school however is not the place, nor does it have the time. The children are subjected to many ideologies in school already that should not be allowed. The main objective in school should be academic as well as social growth (making friends and human connection) and nothing else, however as you can see all over the media, school has turned into a playground for adults to push their agenda and beliefs and no longer for learning and connection. It very sad to watch. Children need to grow and learn. In time they will be able to make their own decisions on what to believe and follow, it should be on their own terms.

In the 7th century, the Catholic Church established All Saints’ Day (also called All Hallows’ Day) on November 1 to honor saints and martyrs.

The evening before became All Hallows’ Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween.

Later, All Souls’ Day (November 2) added prayers for all the departed, reinforcing the connection with the dead.

First, I was thrilled to read students banned together to have some fun while demonstrating initiative, planning and organizational skills using a light hearted theme. Then I was crushed to learn such self starting was banned. Education is meant to expose students to all ideas, knowledge and different perspectives to help them decide for themselves what is real and what is fiction. I seriously doubt this ban was imposed by offended students but by some offended parent who would force their own ideology on others. What's next, banning the trappings of cultural holidays like Halloween, Easter, Hanukkah, and Christmas? Do these same oppose Halloween trick or treat? Why there were witches in Europe, and colonial America— but not anywhere else, was (as I’ve been led to understand) had something to do with the Holy Ghost, before the Holy Ghost metamorphosed into the Holy Spirit. Smh… the sad part is that you truly believe what you said. I mean no disrespect it’s just that when you don’t actually study ancient history and learn about the actual origins behind stories that are basically repeated over and over again from one civilization to the next, and then learn how that Bible, the original, was formed and then mistranslated and reinterpreted to fit different narratives depending on the time and the Pope/King… the Bible (The New Testament) is a good foundational tool but as a literary work it is widely inaccurate and can actually mislead you from the core teachings of Christ which were ALL about Love, Forgiveness, doing for others, living a life that is without judgement of others or anger towards others… Probably the most obvious way for him to be clear about it was when he said to pray to yourself and not in a church where someone else is telling you what to think… your relationship with Christ is supposed to be private and unique… You should consider looking into when the term witch or occult was actually added to the Bible by the Catholic Church…

Indeed the reverse is true as is clear in this article. There is no place for any of this in public schools, but if Christians demand 1st Amendment protections their suppression of the free expression of other major and minor non Christian people is hypocritical in the extreme and reveals their true aim for a Christian Theocratic Nationalist State. I have lost all respect for Christians because of this sometimes violent suppression of others. Even Mormon proselytizers are more respectful and open to dialog in a free and dignified manner, nothing like the hypocrite Bible thumper who misuse our Constitution to impose their will. It is a gross dishonoring of grandmothers and mothers. And favouring only of the father (Christianity), It is very harmful to everyone. It is also ridiculous. Schools should be secular. No religions or spirituality should be allowed or favored in the schools. According to the Constitution, freedom of speech should be encouraged. Respect paganism. Jesus actually was a pagan. He practiced, and taught, much of what paganism teaches. Seek out paganism and witches for the powerful and wonderful religion they offer and teach. The propaganda that witches are so powerful they can "hex" your severed leg back on--is ridiculous. Pagan witches are human beings who have spent their lives studying the mysteries of life. They are intellectuals who have earned a lot of knowledge. Then they offer it us. Blessed be.

The fact they're shrieking FOUL and forced it to shut down shows that it's not about their Religion, it's about CONTROL!
