Former KKK member Ken Parker getting baptized
Ken Parker started doubting his racist beliefs after meeting people of color who treated him with acceptance and kindness.

For six years, Ken Parker was a full-on white supremacist hate monger - and he had all the fashion accessories to prove it.

There was the $170 green robe he dawned as a grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, a title he earned by recruiting new members in Georgia back in 2012 - the missing eyeholes in his hood a testament to his refusal to mask his beliefs. And then there was the black shirt with the two lighting bolts sewn into the collar - the toned down uniform an American neo-Nazi group rebranded to welcome Alt-Right types fearful of the swastika. That was the outfit Parker wore the day he and hundreds of other neo-Nazis gathered for the infamous "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last summer.

Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville
The "Unite the Right" rally attracted white supremacists from around the country.

Parker felt his presence at the rally was needed to "stand up" for his white race. "It was thinly veiled [as an effort] to save our monuments, to save our heritage. But we knew when we went in there that it was gonna turn into a racially heated situation, and it wasn't going to work out good for either side," he said.

It definitely wouldn't work out well for 32-year-old Heather Heyer, who was run over and killed during the violent clashes between white nationalists and counter protesters that shocked the country. For Parker, however, it would mark the beginning of the end of a hate-filled existence.

A Change of Heart

It was in Charlottesville that he met filmmaker Deeyah Khan, who was shooting a documentary on hate groups called "White Right: Meeting the Enemy." Parker and his white supremacist buddies were catching their breath after the crowds had been dispersed by police when Khan approached them. As he explains:

"I pretty much had heat exhaustion after the rally because we like to wear our black uniforms, and I drank a big Red Bull before the event. And I was hurting and she was trying to make sure I was OK. She was completely respectful to me and my fiancée the whole time. And so that kind of got me thinking: She's a really nice lady. Just because she's got darker skin and believes in a different god than the god I believe in, why am I hating these people?"

Of course, Parker would still come across as unabashedly racist in Khan's film, spewing out his hate for Jews and gay people. But he started doubting those beliefs over the next few months; doubts that only intensified the day he met African-American neighbor William McKinnon III at a poolside cookout near his apartment complex.

After a lengthy discussion, the All Saints Holiness Church pastor invited Parker to the church's Easter service. Something clicked. Time passed. And before long, Parker stood before the mostly black congregation of his new church and spilled the beans about his past.

"I said I was a grand dragon of the KKK, and then the Klan wasn't hateful enough for me, so I decided to become a Nazi and a lot of them, their jaws about hit the floor and their eyes got real big. But after the service, not a single one of them had anything negative to say. They're all coming up and hugging me and shaking my hand, you know, building me up instead of tearing me down."

Coming to Jesus

Far from being shunned, Parker was baptized in the Atlantic on July 21, surrounded by the same people he had spent six years hating intensely, the same ones he had confronted that faithful day in Charlottesville just seven months earlier. This week, he started a months-long process to remove swastika, Klan symbol and Confederate flag tattoos.

"I do apologize. I know I've spread hate and discontent through this city immensely probably made little kids scared to sleep in their own beds in their own neighborhoods. You can definitely get out of this movement. I mean...I never thought I would get out."

Parker's message to others still running with the neo-Nazi crowd is simple: "Get out. You're throwing your life away."

The good thing is though, he changed his life around believing in myth, or fear of hell resulting from mythological stories. It would have been better if he’d changed his life around because “he” wanted to, without a fictitious god hanging over his head.

Personally, I hope he is happy with his direction of Christianity. Others could just as well have taken the path of Judaism, Islam, Humanist, or even Pantheism. As long as he no longer harms people, either physically, emotionally or verbally, good on him. If he insults those who are not Christian, telling them that they are wrong, then I have no respect for him, especially since he exchanged one hatred for another.

      Time will tell.

INDEED! And, as long as no one shoved Jesus down his throat, or coerced or harassed him into it, .... well, then, I agree! Yes, themonastery.org "Sells" Ordination"... and credentials.... but, my "Christian" belief leads me to believ that God KNOWS and judges the heart. I also agree Dan , that it would be a gross miscarriage of faith to exchange one hate for another. After all, MY Jesus said; "This is my Commandment, that you love one another.." And, my Congregants said: "AMEN!". - Brother Michael, OSL (The Order of St. Luke).

This site is about being a ordained minister through them, most of the people here are believers of some sort so why would you be so negative about this man's change of heart? Would you rather that he stay a Neo-Nazi and make other peoples' lives miserable? I don't understand.

      1. Lionheart's Avatar Lionheart

On the contrary, I’m glad he’s changed his life around. All I’m saying is that it would have been better if he’d changed his life around because “he” wanted to, with no coercion from any outside source, because if he ever starts to question his belief in that outside source he could easily flip back to where he was in his thought structure.

Jesus is God! Embrace anyone who believes in HIM! The lord, the giver of life-for all that is seen, an unseen.. Jesus will know innately the true intentions of every person he created. Do not worry. God knows who this person is and his intentions at his birth and before.. Praise the lord. The LORD knows and loves all of his children- even if we don't. Praise the lord. Sure, you can look at it that way. But this man, like most humans, needed to belong to a social group. He wanted to change, and he found acceptance in this church. If belief in a "myth" makes it possible for him to change his attitude and accept love, is that such a bad thing?

When I first came here I was sometimes dismayed by the "back-bitting" but as I continued to read it became apparent that there are those here who feed on that type of interaction and the insistence of publically casting doubt upon, belittling, and disparaging one another's stature physically, brain matter capacity, theological training/underpinnings/education . . . and More. Then there are those who are all righteous and None of us can come close to their ideas/ideals of The Living Christ, and then there are those of us who are sort of in the middle, but have solid theological educations and a good deal of common sense which keeps us able to have conversations with the extremes (politically too - for, oh my, is it HERE). And if I have not mentioned your specific group please Forgive. My point is simply that we are ALL HERE and we have ALL been Invited to be here. Perhaps we can rely on God to help us understand ourselves being here and our neighbor's reason too - if not God than whatever you use to discern what is in the world and how you make sense of human being. I wish that it was done in a more charitable overall delivery, but life is not easy and perhaps we here are a natural outgrowth of God's creations. 1. Lionheart's Avatar Lionheart

Perhaps I’ve not read all the articles as I haven’t read of any actual hate or vitriolic comments. Ive noticed there are times people can be rude if someone makes a comment against their faith, or asks them to back up their beliefs. It’s a difficult one isn’t it?

For instance, people like yourself, like to make comments about the portrayed life of someone that can be read about in a book that is believed to be the word of god. That doesn’t bother me at all, but if people want to make statements implying that they have a sure knowledge of truth they then leave themselves open for others who don’t have the same beliefs at all to debate their comments.

Archaeologists have supporting data of a few of the characters in that book you call the Bible, but currently, there is no factual evidence that the man called Jesus ever existed at all. It’s understood there were many people if that time proselyting, and one of them could in fact have been called Jesus. Until there is further factual evidence I doubt we shall ever really know.

Please don’t misread my comments as being hateful or vitriolic, I am merely making a point of what is currently known, or not known, about the facts listed in that book.

It is nice though to read members comments for, and against, a god. If someone is going to insist there’s a god of this world, I like to read to try and figure out where they are coming from, and often their arguments bears very little substance, other than silly statements like “God has spoken to them” or “They have a sure knowledge”. A Nobel peace prize awaits anyone who can prove a god exists. No one has yet claimed it!

It would be very nice if someone could claim that prize one day. Until then I guess it’s just pipe dreams.

I always read all of the posts. I no longer respond to any of them. I find so many appalling and discusting. I have resolved to responding only to the original story. So here goes. No matter which loving faith he has chosen, I hope it will become faith in himself to do the right things, the honorable things for the rest of his life! Good faith and love can be a strong motivator for himself. Peace and love to all.

I agree with you. If this is what works to free him from hatred then it's a good thing.

He has made a reasonable start by joining in repentance. Find love. It is a journey. He is on a better path "in search of " Love. Paul not Saul. Grace not disgrace. Thanks and praise.

    Wow...What I'm reading above..

The KKK is a religious group..their Christian...All this Jesus talk and no one realizes that Jesus was a Jew..So everything before Christainty..Christainty looked at as heathens..hum

Religion is someone's idea..and that's all it is..Its not spiritual at all..

When people to towards religion they are looking for peace and a since of belonging. He can see how he was lead to hate and can seen no reason for it. He has opened his mind..Did he trade one for the other..Maybe yes..But to me he is looking for belonging and love.

Life is a journey and hope he starts looking inward instead of out because he is going to find nothing but pain...

And by the way. The swastika was a Hindu symbol..As I can remember it means well being. Also the American Indians used it also.

The cross that we use for the symbol of Christianity has also been used and abused.

And by the way..I read a comment about Atheist as not being religious..Religion just a Latin word for bind and people bind for reasons..Atheist are very nice people and don't blame anyone..nor demeaning ..its not fear based at all..

There is a religion that dose not believe in a greater...There are other books out there then the bible..Don't be so small minded..

A prime example of the hypocritical egos of humans. It is great that he had a change of venue. Looking at the bigger picture. Mormons thought harems were a good thing... From the early 1800's that polygamy was acceptable. That lasted about 100 years as they tapered out "Sealing". Then in the 1970's the Mormons tapered out the restriction of African decent being ministers. What was the laws of love back then (Laws of god) is changed once again. The Catholic church & boys? Reined for about 100 years. Now it is frowned upon & illegal. If the laws were not written to prevent much of this who knows how long it may have continued because of humans egos. Here we get the KKK defector. Believing in his "new " choice of religion. The KKK lovers hate him, the Jesus lovers love him. Its all called Egocentric predicament when it come to ones personal phaneron. What is true & or real? Study ones self, it shall be known.

I'm really glad he's recognized his wrong doing but the proof is in the pudding. Past joining a church, has he done things that have made it clear he's no longer involved or interested in segregation and hate according to race? As a Christian is he out there doing as Jesus instructed? Or is he using this opportunity to refocus hate onto a whole new group of people (Non-Christians)? That would be my question and I'd really rather not put much thought into it until that's made a lot more clear.

Well I can't see into his heart so I can't judge whether or not he is sincere. I would have to judge him based on his future actions. However just because a person converts does not mean they should be put into positions where they could possibly hurt someone. Trust needs to be earned. It is not given away.

The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice. - MLK If we are not agents of Love, are not arc benders, are not working to right wrongs, then in our complacency are we not complicite in hateful and hurtful acts and movements? Standing on the sidelines is no longer an option. All who lean toward the love within, need to get in the game and act in the name of Love, just like those folks did for Ken Parker. I don't care where one seeks and finds their inspiration to be agents of Love. Jesus in an example of Love in action. The Dalai Lama too. Call me a Buddhist Christian. Does it matter? Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with the Creator. Micah 6:8

I lot of wonderful comments but some miss the point. This is about a man giving his heart to the Lord. If he was sincere, it will change his life forever. We are not to judge his heart. Time will tell. It's like buying a tree from a nursery. They may tell you it's an apple tree or peach tree, but when it blooms and bears fruit, then you will know. As Christians, we have no choice but to accept his words unless he proves otherwise.

    1. Lionheart's Avatar Lionheart

If he was sincere of his “own” volition, he stands a better chance of never changing his mind by giving his heart to himself, no one else.

As human beings we all have choice Gary in this country of freedom and liberty. You don’t have to accept anyone’s words until factual evidence proves truth.
