patriarch bartholomew I of constantinople
Faith leaders the world over claim they can speak directly to God.

“Are you there, God? It’s me, Pope Francis.”

And the President of Mormonism… and any number of charismatic religious leaders who say they’ve got the direct number to God’s holy landline.

Many of the world’s faithful believe they have a special relationship with God (or some other higher power), and will pray over difficult decisions as they seek guidance at a crossroads in their life.

This is often referred to as “talking” with God, and generally speaking it is not taken literally.

But what about faith leaders who say they can actually “talk talk” with God? As in, they (and their followers) claim that they act as a conduit through which it’s possible for a higher power to relay messages to the Earthly realm.

Who Can Talk to God?

There are many religious leaders across different global faiths who are either perceived (or simply claim) to have a special, direct line of communication with their God.

We have compiled a list of some of the most prominent figures alive today who allegedly have a direct line to a higher power.

Note: we did our best to gather these, but we're sure they are more. Some faiths, like Judaism, specifically, say no such living person can fill this role. Others are less clear.

1. Pope Francis (Catholicism): As the Pope, Francis is regarded by Catholics as the Vicar of Christ on Earth and the spiritual successor to Saint Peter, which implies a special, though not necessarily literal, communication with God. The pope is selected by the College of Cardinals, which casts a vote to decide who should fill the role.

The doctrine of “papal infallibility” means that when the pope is formally teaching church doctrine, Catholics can be certain it is the true word of God.

2. Dalai Lama (Tibetan Buddhism): The Dalai Lama is considered the reincarnation of Avalokiteśvara, the living Bodhisattva of compassion, an enlightened being who chose to be reborn to help others. While the notion of communicating with a higher power is not necessarily part of Buddhist teachings, the Dalai Lama is revered as having a profound spiritual connection and a deeper understanding of Buddhist principles and values than anyone else on Earth.

3. Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople (Eastern Orthodox Christianity): As the Ecumenical Patriarch, he is considered the spiritual leader – "first among equals" – of the Eastern Orthodox Christians. While he is leader of this branch, the Orthodox faith emphasizes that anyone can find a personal and communal relationship with God through prayer, liturgy, and the sacraments.

So, although the Patriarch is a key figure in leading and representing the Church, his ability to communicate with God is not a necessarily any stronger than that of other members.

4. Mirza Masroor Ahmad (Ahmadiyya Muslim Community): Muslims believe that the last prophet, Muhammad, was the final messenger of God. He is regarded as the "Seal of the Prophets," meaning that no prophets will come after him.

Mirza Masroor Ahmad (Image by אחמד 248 - Own work)

So while no living prophets exist in Islam, certain sects do see their leaders as having special relationships with a higher power. For example, the Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, is considered by his followers to hold a deep spiritual connection to God.

5. The Shankaracharya (Hinduism): Shankaracharyas – referring to the heads of monasteries (mathas) established by the 8th-century saint Adi Shankaraare – are respected as spiritual leaders in the Hindu tradition and are often regarded as having deep spiritual insights.

Shankaracharya Bharathi Tirtha (Image by Smaranharidashwa - Own work)

Similar to the Dalai Lama, in the traditional Hindu context, the Shankaracharya's connection with a higher power is more about an inward, spiritual realization of the ultimate truth, rather than a communication with a separate, personal deity.

6. Leaders of various Pentecostal and Charismatic Christian movements: Many of these leaders claim to have direct experiences with the Holy Spirit, which in their belief system is equivalent to a direct line of communication with God. Here are a few examples:

- Benny Hinn: A well-known televangelist and faith healer, Benny Hinn has claimed he is God's unique instrument to cure believers of every maladie under the sun, from blindness to cancer. He often speaks about receiving apocalyptic visions and prophetic messages that he believes are directly from God.

- Kenneth Copeland: As a prominent televangelist in the Charismatic movement, Kenneth Copeland is known for his prosperity gospel teachings. He claims to receive direct revelations from God. Copeland even claims that Jesus once compared the two of them. “Don’t be disturbed when people accuse you of thinking you’re God,” Copeland says Jesus told him. "“The more you get to be like me, the more they’re going to think that way of you."

Copeland has also been known to tell his followers that donating to him financially will result in a return on investment for them when they reach heaven.

- Paula White: Another televangelist and a proponent of prosperity gospel, Paula White has spoken about her personal conversations with God, claiming that she receives divine revelations and guidance in her ministry. She also served as a spiritual advisor to President Trump, which she has described as an "assignment" straight from God, who directed her to "show him who I am."

- Rodney Howard-Browne: Known for his involvement in the Holy Laughter movement (where congregants giggle in apparent spiritual drunkenness), Rodney Howard-Browne claims to facilitate direct experiences of the Holy Spirit among his congregation, often resulting in what he describes as physical manifestations of God's presence and communication - often during sermons. Referring to himself as "God's bartender," Howard-Browne says his direct line with God began during a prayer in 1979 when God replied directly to him by making him laugh uncontrollably.

- Joyce Meyer: A Charismatic Christian author and speaker, Joyce Meyer often talks about her personal relationship with God, which began at age 9 when she was born again. Since then, she says she hears from God "throughout the day," including when asking for donations from congregants.

LDS president Russell M Nelson
Russell M. Nelson

7. Leaders in Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints): In Mormonism, the President of the Church is elected by a senior group of 12 faith leaders. The President is regarded as a prophet, seer, and revelator, and is believed to have a special communication line with God. The current president is Russell M. Nelson, who will turn 100 years old in September.

Mormons believe that their president receives revelation directly from God for the guidance of the entire church. This belief extends to the general authorities of the church, including the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

These leaders are considered by members of the LDS Church to be prophets, seers, and revelators, holding the authority to receive and declare the will of God for the church. They are considered God’s spokesmen here on earth, and they alone receive God’s revelation.

Human nature being what it is, we often find some people use the name of an "authority", (police, government, or God), as citation for why someone should comply with their wishes. Sadly, some people will comply.

I can't count the number of times someone has made up a reason citing authority, when in reality they were trying to validate the lie.

Rev Rory, I commend that attitude, it is not common to read something that makes so much sense lol... I believe any who talk to God are using their faith to help themselves deal with their struggles... Then, you have those who would plunder the faith of good folks, just to line their pockets. Thanks for the post.

This is the reality I inhabit. I am God. I am consciousness, the sum total of all consciousness is god from within which I am individuated. The search for something greater than ones self is an illusion, consciousness is the fundamental factor, the causal factor that instigates my reality. I accept that there is no absolute truth, individual consciousnesses experience THEIR reality and all are equally valid. Rejoice in spiritual diversity and embrace other consciousnesses contrary paths to their truth. No being has privileged access to the divine. I guess everyone already knows this, instinctively.

The very Bible declares that all humans and all other creatures, for that matter, are aware of God rom the time they are born. Knowledge of God is in the DNA of all created beings. The religious approach is learned, yes, but the essence of all belief systems is God and he is instinctively known by the creatures that He has created.

If we as a “World of people” would stop mixing politics and religious ideology then kindness might prevail. Belief of any type is personal and subjective and should never be dictated to others. Have your beliefs but just make sure you don’t attempt to recruit others due to your fear of the afterlife. 😊

All these supposed gods, and even many more, exist in many peoples minds, and that’s exactly what it is, it’s all in the mind, to the point they really believe it’s real. On the plus side, if people say they talk to someone in their head, and they listen to it and it directs their lives, they won’t be listed as having a psychiatric condition as long as they say that person is a “deity”. That’s the magical word to dodge a huge bullet. If they say it’s anything else speaking in their head that they talk and listen to they need to be careful who they say it to if they don’t want some special people in white coats knocking on their door. 🤭

You are of course correct that believers have a world of….well… believers, that understand their own world. Non believers (free thinkers) also have their world of those that probe for truth using logic, reason, and critical thought. It’s a wonderfully exciting world of inquiry, and mystique. As the only known ULC Bishop Emeritus, who’s actually able to prove the existence of the one and only God (who’s actually nature personified) I’d like to pontificate to my fellow ULC brethren, that anyone can talk to God — any time, anywhere, just by yelling at the sky, and asking for rain — which has been done since the earliest of times— and sometimes it rained, and sometimes it didn’t. When nature talks back, it’s called lightning and thunder, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tidal waves, locus infestation, plagues, overpopulation indicators, or the like, and sometimes humankind takes heed, but mostly it doesn’t. But for those who’re still committed to a supernatural ineffable God — you can talk to such a God all you care to; it’s only when your God actually talks back to you, and you can actually hear what he says (in English) then the rest of us should be forewarned, and therefore take heed,

What? No burning bushes that speak or snakes that talk?

      1. ServantOfJudgement's Avatar ServantOfJudgement

Some extremely curious gents in Japan videotaped plants communicating with one another. They figured out that when a plant is in distress it will notify nearby plants as much. A burning bush would do the same according to science. If plants can talk we can be sure snakes can talk, which we know all animals talk.

Apparently some folks think the sky can talk. Not sure how you'd prove the sky can talk but the Bible says the wind follows circuits to where it will, meaning the sky thinks for it's own as William suggests. It would explain why the weather is no more predictable than a fickle human and why the most scientifically studied natural phenomenon is still a phenomenon.

Weather thinks, animals talk, coffee smells good.

Communication with God is at the center of cultist spirituality, deeply entrenched in religious dogma. Unfortunately, in many situations it has superseded an energetic connection to the forces of nature which dwarf religious understanding. While any individual can project unique connection with the "divine", claiming that it belongs to a mostly male religious leaders doesn't pass "the straight face" test, particularly since the feminine carries the creation of life.

    1. Rev. Elizabeth's Avatar Rev. Elizabeth

Anything. Am be called a cult like behavior. I don’t like to think that my faith is cultist. All religions do have their leaders and many follow blindly. That I will give you. I personally am not like it. I took on the Catholic Church more than once in my life. I left them. To me that was and I don’t see changes so I will say, it still is a cult like religion. They create their own laws and prayers which deviates from the Christian Bible. To get me where I am today took years of fighting with them and God preventing me some rights due me. Broken heart many times. I was miserable with them. The story of how I got here is long but it happened because He said it is time, get going. Now I understand why he wanted me away from the Catholic religion so I could be who I am with a different religion. A place I was seeking when I felt so lost. One thing I will share is this… I was in a university studying psychology to enhance my occupation. As I was studying I heard Hom say to me,” stop what you are doing and look for a seminary for your education.” That’s it. I said I am studying to have my work. No reply. So I looked for a seminary. Found the one I could do and continue what I’m doing for my work. So I enrolled and I was studying at the University and the Seminary. He didn’t tell me to stop the University. So I graduated from both with exceptional grades. Next thing I know I am helping people outside of my work and that is where I kept growing and resigning my job with the company I was with. I went to a church and worked with them with wonderful deal they I couldn’t say no too. It was the smartest move and I thanked God for leading me here. When I was 6yrs old and my Mom and me walking out of church I said to her that I have to work for God. She said now? No, but I have to and He will tell me when. I knew this as if this was innate with me. She guided me and protected my bath. Then I said to her when I was around 8 that I need to be a priest. She said I couldn’t. Only men are priests. I said I have to. How else can I work for God? She said I could be a Nun. I said they is working for the Priest, not God. She’s said it is working for God. She protected my journey because she knew how faithful and strong I was. The. I was 12 and my hard work and my desire was destroyed by one man, higher up in the Catholics reigns. That is when I declared I will not go back to that church or any of their churches. I was so lost and unfulfilled until I was 30. My his and brings home a pamphlet. He says it’s not Catholic. I think you should call. I’m still a taught. Catholic and the thought of entering another church had me petrified. I told the pastor when I talked to him. He on fired me to. Mitch and we talked and I was home. I was no longer lost. God told me one night as I was falling asleep, I heard Him say, “You are home. Follow where I lead and you will be working for me like you declared.” It brings me to today. I am so happy I listened to him and I now know why what I went through when I was Catholic. It has to happen to get me here or I would be a Nun today. This is why I obey Him. I have never been steered wrong.

Thanks for reading. This was and is my life so please be kind. You are entitled to your belief and your journey. I don’t devalue anyone in here. Please don’t devalue my life. I’m not saying this to you Mark, alone. I’m saying this to anyone who reads this too.

If I put here what actually happens between me and God, most of you will not believe me and actually be rude to me. So I will say this instead…Yes, I believe individuals who talk to God knows how to hear God’s response to them. Could be a voice, could be a situation you get put in, it could be staring you in your face on an email that fits what you talked about, arrive with a messenger with a letter or in the newspaper or someone online. Old be a phone call from someone you trust completely. So many different ways of communication. So I will not say it is false. It is truth. Not all have this communication but they can. Their faith is what brings them to Him and the Christian Holy Bible help with how as well.

Happy 2024 to you all and let’s live with kinder words to people this year and especially have more patience.

I believe you. Its probably not uncommon what you experience. Once we took a swamp tour in the LA bayou. I asked the guide, "where are the alligators?" He laughed and threw a fat marshmallow in the water and 3 gators quickly jumped off the logs they'd been laying on and swam towards us to get the treat. Suddenly, looking around, I could see a dozen or more. Once I knew how to see them, I couldn't not see them. The same it was for me talking to God. Once I was able to have a conversation with him and heard him, I can't not hear him when he talks to me. Sometimes, he doesn't respond, others he speaks unbidden. I might be thinking of a course of action and get the "don't do that" or "do that".

An example, our neighbor was selling a small pickup. We didn't need it, but it was in good shape and my other truck wasn't and we wanted to do some traveling. But we didn't need it. Suddenly, I'm told, "you're going to buy it". We did. I then lost my job (which came with a company vehicle) and the next job only paid for gas. If I didn't have the truck I don't know how I would have made money. When we no longer needed it, it started to fall apart, we donated it to those Kars kids, got a nice vacation voucher.

My wife was having some serious depression over the passing of her parents and asked God for a "sign". I went out to get the mail at the street, there in the middle of the road was one of those election style signs but it was green and only had one word on it..."Jesus". I brought it in and she wanted to know what it meant. I said, "you asked for a sign! Here it is! Not sure what else you need." We still have it behind the tikibar.

And lastly, while on my wife's 50th birthday trip to Hawaii, her parents had invited themselves along and basically with all their requirements kinda ruined the trip. We couldn't go an do what we wanted. I was filling the rental car with gas and was in a foul mood. An old pickup pulled up the the pumps, a grizzled old man got out to gas his truck and said, "be happy, God loves you you know." I told him I know, suddenly it occurred to just deal with the situation and enjoy the modified vacation as best as possible. I turned to say something to him but he and his truck were gone. He didn't gas up and I didn't hear him leave. After that vacation her mom passed away followed by her dad. It was their last vacation, they had a great time.

I believe God "speaks" with me, but its not something to go on TV about. I bet more folks talk with him than let on.

I would say, “If I didn’t listen to God and do what he told me, I would have missed this!” I listen when he tells me. Sometimes I don’t like what He tells me. I wait long enough and I learn why. I’m still 3yrs in after asking where we belong. I’m not happy where I am living. I’ve been wanting to move but every obstacle comes up and we can’t do it. I’m thinking He wants me here. I’m waiting to see why. I’m also praying He will let me move soon.

I am sorry if this sounds harsh but assigning life events, good or bad, to the will of a mythical being is just plain brainwashing. I can only hope that one day mankind will recover from these mythical beliefs. Peace ✌️

Brien, I understand what you are saying. I have been hearing God’s voice since I was 6 yrs old. I may have been younger just not understanding God yet. He still talks to me today when He requires me to do something, help someone, perform tasks that I need to do before I could do His work. I wish you could have witnessed my journey. You would not post this if you had. I respect your belief and I do pray you keep your mind open to the fact that there is a supreme being.

Do you think all in this world is happenstance or it was created and it was created for humans? Do you think once we die that is it? I know another who is like that. I say to him, no faith? What drives you in this world if you don’t have faith and a goal to reach? He couldn’t answer me. He is my son and he was raised in a Methodist Church, Sunday School and all the trips with the church and our life working with others to help others and he doesn’t believe. I cannot imagine not having faith and believing there is a supreme being. I told him I would rather go to my grave believing there is more and will live eternally then go to my grave saying it was fun, bye. He is too smart for his own good. IQ has always been higher than his peer group and still is. He once told me he can’t dummy down enough to just sit with another man and have a beer and just share. He can drink beers with his friends but he cannot participate in many discussions. I said I am so sorry Son. You never shared that with me before. His wife is highly intellectual as well. They have three kids the same way and the other two, one is average intellect, can understand all and the other one struggles. Brain injury at some point in development or in birth. The child gets there, just takes a bit longer. A beautiful soul. My daughter is a smart woman and can understand others that are not up to her intellect. She is patient and understands. Her kids are diverse in different intellects. One of them is autistic and 113 IQ at age 9. Average is between 30 - 50 in his age group. Another one has some brain damage in birth or just something went wrong. Just about 1 yr younger than her age level. The others are intellectual with time peers. One child is so smart that you can’t feed him enough. He’s a sponge and wants to know more and more. He’s a wonderful young man, enjoys hanging with his friends and playing the electronic games he plays with others online. His parents join in too.

I just pray my son will accept there could be more and willing to learn and accept Jesus before he dies. I pray that for you as well.

          God Bless you and yours.

I am sorry for you. You have had much to deal with without much in the way of help. I believe it has driven you to retreat into a mythical belief. Believing that a powerful being will help to absorb the pain and miraculously fix all the troubles may be the only choice you had. That is a failure on SOCIETY'S part for not having the proper help that you needed. Mental health can be helped. Savant children with proper schooling by proper professionals can be highly successful in life. You may believe what ever you wish, as long as that belief does not blind you to reality. Please, do not pray for me. I am reality based. I am responsible for my own actions. I am responsible for my mistakes, and my success. I do not ask any mythical being for absolution nor do I believe that mankind is born in sin. I do not escape into the arms of a myth, if I did it would be Babar the elephant. I hope that all is well with you and yours. I also hope that when you need help, that it is a real person that helps you. Peace✌

We all talk to GOD all the time even when we think we aren’t. The trick is to listen. I think GOD talks to all of us all the time. HIS voice is soft so as not to override free will. Our egos also speak to us and that voice is very loud. We often mistake our egos voice for that of GOD. It is not easy to suppress our own ego enough to hear GODS voice.

I enjoyed this article and agree that it is very informative. I truly appreciate that you published it. While I also agree as a commenter above said, we all have a connection to God, however, I doubt anyone is capable of the type of connection that some of these persons profess. We are spiritual beings having a human experience which means that our ability to hear the Divine seems to be limited at the moment. However, I do hold out hope that at least some of us are able to hear the divine word better than others. I doubt that these individuals are the ones getting all of the press so to speak. I believe they are the quiet ones who are doing the work of God without attracting attention. God bless the spiritual workers. Meanwhile, the rest of us can work to better hear the word of God in our lives.

The Ecumenical Patriarch of the Orthodox Church is called "The First Among Equals." The belief is that he is merely put in a position to act as the head of the "Church Militant" (those still living) and not any more special than anyone else. All monks spend the entire day in seclusion from the world and constantly pray, even as they speak with others. They don't judge. They refer to the Gospels in order to give advice, and they ask us to pray for wisdom, not earthly things. For example, if we want a new car, we ask for the wisdom and ability to go and earn the money to pay for it, not for the car outright. They also advise us to recite the Lord's Prayer, inserting our needs in the proper places. Part of that prayer is also to ask us to forgive others who may have committed any sins against us as we forgive them, as is taught in Matthew. Bartholomew explicitly explains that he's no better or worse than anyone else on Earth. He's simply the leader of the Orthodox Christian Church, and yes, that he, too, is susceptible to human errors.

    1. Ann Elizabeth Schurman's Avatar Ann Elizabeth Schurman

Yes, anyone can talk to god thru prayer, it is going inside our true higher selves/opposite the ego mind. And meditation is the balance of the entire conversation, This takes practice and the more we do so, the more we are able to quiet the ego, and hear the replies. These replies are always there if we are quiet and listen. It’s our conscious mind/our intuition that gives us these subtle feedbacks. If we ignore the messages, sometimes we get a cosmic 2x4 until we finally hear. Some never do and struggle thru this and other lifetimes. Some hear or see the lesions and make different choices. Earth is the only planet in which we have free will, which is why it can be so difficult or so easy. We get to play and creat our open lives. Angels are there guiding us all our 3D earthly lives as well. Angels are indeed the messengers of God. We also have guides. So we do have help. Are here to learn, kinda like a school. We can repeat grades but not skip. NDE’ers all return with the same information. I am you, you are me, we are one all is well. And all there is is love.

I believe what the Bible says, that we can communicate with God but not in the sense of a back and fourth conversation you'd have with you mom or neighbor. God may move our hearts, move our minds. We might feel words or the desire to do something, maybe work somewhere or call an old friend, take food to someone who's too injured to get around easy.

The other way is this feeling in my gut that simply won't go away. Do I claim to be prophetic? No. Am I psychic No. I just listen to the inner voice that God is to me. However, we also have to remember we see through a glass darkly. When someone starts saying they speak for God, my first reaction is to pull away. I know Bartholomew doesn't have these luxuries. He flies commercial when he travels, and he lives simply in the Holy See in Constantinople, which sits in the middle of Istanbul. He's a very simple-living man with many good insights. He's very humble and he is well chosen by the bishops of the Orthodox Church. The different colors worn during liturgies throughout the ecumenical year indicate the celebrations of the season, with white and gold colors during the fifty days between the Orthodox Holy Pascha and the Pentacost celebration. Purple is worn between the first and last days of the Holy Lenten season, and other colors are worn to indicate the Nativity of Christ and other feasts. It's very interesting to see these things, and each piece of the liturgical wear is placed on the Priest with a prayer as that piece is put on. Even the cuffs are indicative of the Royal Order of Leadership through ordinance. I know this from having served the Altar in the Orthodox Church in Amarillo, Texas. It's a very uplifting experience.

    To the Atheist,

We believers often hear from you "show me proof of God and I'll believe". When we seek proof of something, we don't need the actual thing to prove the thing exists. I'll illistate: The discovery of a bullet in a murder victim is proof there is a gun even though the gun may never be found.

Look no further for your proof of the supernatural than the demon possessed face of Kenneth Copland. Pick a video of him, any video will do. You'll easily see what you need, though you won't like it, not one bit.

How you convince an atheist is simple. You ask him what the prophecies were just before Jesus ascended into heaven. They can tell you because most atheists know the Gospel better than most Christians. Ask them to compare them to today's events and ask them how this could be foretold two thousand years before they happen. Sit and ask them to ask themselves why they cannot believe in the next plane of existence. Then have them sit down and listen to Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner's "The Three Thousand Year Old Man" album. It's hilarious, historically accurate and explains things very well in its own way. There's something divine about laughter with a lesson.

God desires our communication with Him. The biggest stretch of our faith is perhaps the inaudible moving of our God. Present-day people claim to hear from God via dreams. He probably isn’t going to light a shrub on fire in our front yards to get our attention as He did through Moses and the burning bush. Yet, because of Jesus, His presence is no less palpable. How do we ignite conversation with our Almighty God? Through prayer. Because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, we can talk to God and He back to us. Prayer teaches us how.

For the Kingdom of God will be restored when the throne is relinquished.

Our egos ( smaller selves) are the ones causing harm, suffering and pain in the world. And we are running the show when this vibration is present. When our release our egos ( release the grip) our higher selves (the kingdom of god within us all) will be restored and peach will be restored.

It's done go home it's fixed awaken They will understand those who know him I feel bad for the list none gave me a tingle I pray for people who Use his Guidance under false pretense for the dollar Never had too many of those but I knew that even when very young most who have are not what I want to be inside
