Muslims could soon outnumber Christians worldwide, according to new data.

A new study from Pew Research Group analyzes the world’s evolving religious landscape for the years 2010 to 2020 and reveals some surprising insights.

The biggest takeaway: although Christianity remains the globe’s biggest religion, if current trends hold, it won’t be the biggest faith for long. Data shows that while Christianity is growing, another faith is growing even faster: Islam.

Muslims could soon outnumber Christians worldwide.

Global Faith Shifts: Christianity Falls in the Rankings

Not just yet, though. Christians remain the world’s largest religious group. As of 2020, some 2.3 billion people around the world identified as Christian.

However, Muslims are not far behind – and now number over 2 billion.

Graph showing global religious distribution
Christianity remains the largest religious group, but Islam is not far behind.

Importantly, while Christianity remained the world’s largest religious group, it failed to keep pace with global population growth.

That means that despite adding 122 million Christians globally over that ten year period, their percentage of the population actually fell nearly 2 percentage points, to 28.8%.

Replacing them? Non-religious people and Muslims. Both groups handily outpaced global population growth.

Graph showing growth and decline of world religions
Although Christianity added followers in the 2010s, it declined as a share of population.

Muslims added a whopping 347 million to their ranks in the 2010s, increasing their share of the world’s global faithful by 1.8%, to a total of 25.6%.

The non-religious were the only other group to increase their share of the population, growing their share of the world’s (non)believers by 1% to 24.2% (adding 270 million people over the past ten years).

Most other groups – including Hindus and Jews – held steady with global population growth. Buddhists were the only other faith group other than Christians to lose a significant share of the global population.

What’s Fueling Faith in Flux?

In the ten-year period analyzed by the survey, Christianity experienced massive drops in Europe and the Americas, and likely only held on to the title of world’s largest faith thanks to Christian gains in sub-Saharan Africa.

Rates of Christianity are dropping across the western world, as more people stop identifying with Christianity once they reach adulthood. Rather than choosing another religion, increasingly they are stepping away from faith entirely (and we’ve written about this rise of the “nones” before).

As for what’s causing these shifts, theories vary.

Everything from widespread availability of scientific information to perceived religious persecution of minorities like the LGBTQ+ community has been blamed for people stepping away from religion.

Islam’s growth was boosted by high birth rates in Muslim communities, helping to grow the faith through reproduction (as opposed to conversion). Pew estimates that Islam is the religion that benefited most from high fertility rates in recent years.

The Muslim faith is also seeing expansion in some surprisingly places, including Japan:

Will Islam Overtake Christianity?

If current trends continue, the answer is not if, but when Islam will become the world’s biggest religion. Some estimates put that date as far out as 2070, though more recent updates predict 2050 – or even sooner.

As for how people feel about this? Reactions are mixed.

Some Muslims expressed pride in their religion’s growth, despite what they see as unfair criticism:

Meanwhile, others are sounding the alarm, warning that “Sharia Law is right around the corner”:

These divisions have heightened tensions across the country, including in New York City, where rising star Zohran Mamdani has faced backlash for his faith as he vies to become the city's first Muslim mayor.

What is your reaction?

Now I did research into this and it seems that at one point the Pope had decided to remove sections of the Bible that they concluded was, promoting demon worshipping and spoke of the fallen angels and the judgement against them. The original removed text that speaks about this would have revealed what I see has been done here. When the fallen were cast into they're dominions, Uriel was the first judged and then Satan. They were given keys to these dominions and commanded to perform they're duties there, "until the golden lamb of God is sent to be sacrificed upon the altar of the world and his blood would cleanse the trespasses of man against God so they may be spared the punishments on the place prepared for those who have blasphemed against God and disobeyed his commands." Uriel was sent to earth to usher the souls of men who died to the place that had been prepared for them and he could not take any physical form nor could he return to heaven, only to usher the dead to and from the place prepared for them and he was given the keys of Life. Satan was the next to be judged and he was set as the keeper or steward of the place of punishment for those men who blasphemed gods name and made themselves unclean and it was a place to hold those angels who had defied the command of God and raised up in rebellion against him. There those angels who made war against God and were cast into the outer darkness that was furthest from his presence would stay until the end of the world and then they still would not be allowed to enter heaven but instead be made to sit outside the gates until the day when a great judgement would be handed down. And Satan was given the keys of Death and Hades and told that they would perform these tasks they were given until the golden lambs blood was spilled upon the altar. That upon his death Satan was to give to him the keys of Death and Uriel was to give the keys of Life to him, but Satan would retain the keys of Hades and remain the keeper of the place of punishment.

It was a precursor to the resurrection of God's son was what this all meant. Now look at the second highlight That was one, the other one was the seven lamp stands but going over it I can't find any listing in the texts but it was my personal experience when I stood before him. It was not what was listed here that I saw, When I saw him walking towards me he had seven stars in his left hand and a Hanukkah with 12 candles in it. He told me the seven stars represented the seven angels of the seven churches and the 12 candles represented the 12 tribes of Judah which were the children of Israel by the bloodline of David. And he had a rainbow over his head and clouds for sandals with rainbows for straps over them and eyes that were like a pillar of fire that stood in the path of the Pharoah when he helped Moses and the Hebrews escape the bondage of Egypt.

Excuse me but I must point something out here. I have explained before that I have had my personal experience, died, went to heaven and stood before God, looked upon his face and spoke with the one whose voice was like a hundred lions roaring yet soothing as a gentle rivers flow at the same time and eyes of pillars of fire. I must speak on a matter I find concerning. I do not know how many of you reading this have tried to write scriptural works and found yourself going back and realizing that what you wrote for some reason, wasn't structured the way you meant it to be and something is just off or missing some aspect that makes it incomplete to the true full message you were seeking to explain. There is an answer to this, realize that not all inspirations towards scripture, are divinely inspired. Whether we realize it or not, some inspirations serve another's purpose than God's. I have noticed this same problem even in the Bible and I have come to the conclusion that it may be possible that the ones writing the scripture may have experienced this same problem. So first know that I am not here to deceive anyone and that I am one who lives by truth in his words as much as I can, so have patience and an open mind. I will list the scripture here that I was making a hymn from when I noticed this and highlight the section concerning me.

"An angel of the Lord appeared and said, Harken and Behold, It is the Almighty, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Holy of Holies, Creator of the Heavens and the Earth."

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,”
    says the Lord God,
“who is, and who was, and who is to come,
    the Almighty.”

    I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me;
and when I turned I saw *SEVEN GOLDEN LAMPSTANDS,
and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man,
dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet
and with a golden sash around his chest.

The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow,
    and his eyes were like blazing fire;
his feet were like bronze, glowing in a furnace,
and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.

In his right hand he held seven stars,
    and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword;
his face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

    When I saw him I fell at his feet as though dead;
then he placed his right hand on me and said,
“Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!
*AND I HOLD THE KEYS OF DEATH AND HADES.”

“Write, therefore, what you have seen,
what is now and what will take place later.
The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand
and of the seven golden lampstands is this:
*THE SEVEN STARS ARE THE ANGELS OF THE SEVEN CHURCHES,
AND THE SEVEN LAMPSTANDS ARE THE SEVEN CHURCHES.”

The less status and equality women have in a culture, country, or religion, the higher the birthrate of that population, so it is no surprise that Islam grows due to birthrate.

Am I the only one to take issue with the fact that the poll indicates people are identifying as ‘religiously unaffiliated’ and the article then equates that to ‘non-religious’??? Does it not see the inherent negativity attached to being associated with any one religion?! Sure, it includes those who may not be religious- but I don’t believe that the entire swath of those opting for that sect ‘believe nothing’. Is it not possible that humans now see any one affiliated group pointing fingers at another arguing who’s more righteous-as a red flag?!?! That makes me question the entirety of this article and the authors intent…🤔

Jesus came to give men faith, NOT religion, he warned the Rabi's of this. Yet to this day every "Religion on the planet claims to be the chosen. This is where men fail and why Islam will also fall. God also gave all men regardless of faith the DUTY and COMMAND to fight or defend against false prophets. Again many choose to fall for the false political thought that all religions are protected. When given the chance to fight those religious leaders simply choose to bend the knee in front of their congregations and submit- this is the act of a coward (Kneeling to false prophet) This will be the cause for the downfall of many. Way too many spend their days "Interpreting Gods word. It is not open for interpretation, which amounts to false prophesy. Men especially teachers should live by the law as written, rather than attempting to be "INCLUSIVE" and condeming themselves and their flocks to damnation.

People keep asking where there Islam will overtake christianity, or whether one man-made religion will outrun another. Honestly, I don't get caught up in scoreboards or belief systems. I'm not in either camp. I walk a different path, a spiritual one that isn't Bound by man's systems, titles, or charts. The truth is, every religion has its numbers game, it's claims of being the fastest growing or most faithful. But numbers don't equal truth, and majorities don't guarantee enlightenment. Christianity, islam, or any other system all of them are shaped by human hands. Human flaws. And human institutions. So when I hear these debates, I can respectively say, I don't care who's winning. What matters to me is something deeper than religious headcounts. Authentic connection, spirit, and the past each Soul has to walk. Religion may rise or fall in statistics, but Spirit isn't Bound by a chart. Head out by 180 Ministries we just have a little bit different view on things.

Another perspective. There is growing credible evidence that humans have been on the planet far longer than our historical data would suggest. Some indigenous groups are verified to have existed for 30,000 years. There are suggestions that the first humans (not pre human, but modern type) appeared as long as 200,000 thousand years ago. Increasing evidence suggests that our present civilization is one of several that have existed. The religions that we have developed are our attempts to make sense of and make practical the Spiritual information that has been given to us through a number of teachers and messengers sent by the One Creator to help us grow beyond our divisive and often destructive human ego. Religions have served a purpose, but they have not been able to unify us. They have not created One Human Family on Earth. They have been our training wheels to spiritual growth. Now that technology has connected humans all across the globe we have reached a place where we Must unify ourselves into one family of diverse human beings who recognize that we are All more than our humanness. As the greatest spiritual masters have taught and demonstrated, we have within us the capacities to heal our sicknesses, feed everyone, live in peace with dignity, and create a heavenly experience right here on earth. To do that we will have to allow our religions to grow into mature spiritual understanding. God is in All of us. God is everywhere present. God is without ego. God is Love, not judgement. War is a creation of human Ego and Fear, it is Not a Solution. Unity (not onformity), Respect, and Compassion empower us to overcome our challenges.

I am amazed that so many comments from ordained "Pastors, Ministers, and Reverends" are laced with hate, judgement, insults and derogatory statements including name calling and labeling.

Wherever your theology heralds from, mankind created "religion" and continues to create new ones. Why would a loving entity or source that provided this globe and put humans here to experience the physical realm, create so many religions to separate and cause friction? Add to that the narcissist need to be worshiped?

Our common "source" is our hearts. This existence is to learn relationships with all things including each other. Please do that with love and respect.

It is our personal stories, trauma, families, culture, society, and experiences that allows us to process and see Universal truth differently.

Let us respect and honor each other. Perspectives will never match up. Pure love for the good of the whole helps to level the playing field. "Play" nicely.

The polarization of the Christian denominations is most likely what is fueling this. Christians who subscribe to the progressive movement are having a hard time "out-shouting" the fear-mongering and hate-pedaling Conservative right-wing Christians. Even some denominations (Methodists most recently) have had internal battles and schisms. Being a Christian is no longer believing in Jesus Christ, it is subscribing to a dogma. Christian evangelism has totally gotten out of hand and is trying to turn this country into one that supports Christian Nationalism. That's enough to turn many away. I am still a Christian, but I am no longer a full subscriber to any denominational doctrine.

How incredibly sad that in the 1st quarter of the TWENTY FIRST century that backward medieval OPINIONS (and never forget that every religion is just a collection of WRONG opinions) are still a feature of life.

As a kid in London in the 1960s, I used to read a comic called TV21. It was all about life in the 21st century and featured characters in sharply cut beige and turquoise suits and angular glasses, living in gadget filled houses and driving aerodynamic cars.

No where did it feature backward savages pushing backward opinions that have no place in modern life.

It just goes to show how the intelligent among us need to re-double our efforts to show that no-one needs a religion of any kind whatsoever for any function or purpose in life and that furthermore, the existence or non-existence of any god or gods if of no relevance to to any human being in any way shape or form.

And we also need to show how wonderful life is without religion. For one thing - depending on your religion - you can get up to 7 years of your life back. And there are so many other benefits of a religion free life too. And that is the message we need to get out there.

And about your “fight like David to kill the giant” comment—that’s exactly the kind of holy war rhetoric we should be avoiding. America doesn’t need soldiers of God looking for giants to slay; it needs citizens who respect each other’s rights and keep religion out of the battlefield.

The rest of it seems pretty weird, too. The PEW chart above makes more sense, where Islam is amongst the world's fastest growing religions. Not the United State's. And the Jews, who are feared to be "taking over the world" and are constantly harassed, shows the smallest growth.

One just has to look at the history of Christianity to see that conquest is one of the driving forces of that religion.

        Rev Mike,

I see your stance on medieval and misguided Christianity.

Let's hear your opinion on Islam of today. For example, the brutality against women and non Muslim or Muslims of the wrong flavor in Iran, Afghanistan, Sudan, Syria and on and on and on. This is ok?

Surly if a misguided medieval Christianity is a fishbone in the throat I'd love to hear your thoughts on today's beheadings, bloodshed and public floggings of women for thinking too much

This article is after all about Islam is it not?

    The 3-PHASES OF MUSLIM IMMIGRATION

Phase 1: Few in number so claim Islam is oppressed. Play the victim card. Claim Islamophobia.

Phase 2 - Large Minority, Demand Sharia Law. Become intolerant of Infidels.

Phase 3 - Clear Majority- Dominant Islam. Be more Militant. Create Strict Sharia Law. Eliminate all infidels.

For 1400 Years This Pattern Hasn't Changed. Moderates Are Irrelevant.

I'm assuming this is a joke? Islam wants you dead. Christianity isn't trying to kill you!
