hand reaching down to help migrants
Are the Abrahamic faiths in alignment when it comes to immigrants?

As protests erupt across Los Angeles and elsewhere over ICE raids targeting undocumented immigrants, clergy from mosques, churches, and synagogues have all weighed in on the debate.

Many of these religious leaders cite scripture to support their stance on how we should treat immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. At times, clergy members have been on the front lines of the protests.

But what do their holy books actually say about migration?

Turns out, quite a bit. Across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, there’s a recurring figure that shows up in moral instruction: the stranger, the sojourner, the foreigner living among you. Sometimes they’re a test of character. Sometimes a symbol of divine mystery. But most often, they’re just… people, deserving of dignity and compassion.

Let’s dig into what these sacred texts actually say about migrants.

What Does Judaism Say About Immigration?

In the Torah, empathy for the immigrant isn’t just suggested. One of the most famous phrases in Jewish scripture is a reminder:

“You shall not wrong or oppress a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” – Exodus 22:21

In Exodus, God hands down laws demanding compassion for some of the most vulnerable communities: Foreigners, widows, and orphans. This sentiment is echoed throughout the Hebrew Bible, including in Leviticus.

“The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” – Leviticus 19:34

The Torah's teaching that immigrants should be treated with love and equality isn’t buried in a footnote, nor is it a suggestion – it’s a command. The entire narrative arc of Jewish identity, from Abraham’s nomadic journey to the Israelites’ exodus, is steeped in the experience of displacement.

"Welcome the Stranger"

This sentiment is echoed by Jewish scholars, who note that one of the Torah's clearest commandments is to "welcome the stranger." As Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks writes:

"The Jewish sages noted that on only one occasion does the Hebrew Bible command us to love our neighbor, but in thirty-seven places it commands us to love the stranger. Our neighbor is one we love because he is like ourselves. The stranger is one we are taught to love precisely because he is not like ourselves."

Rabbi Sharon Brous spoke at an interfaith vigil in Los Angeles. “The moral message is clear: we do not accept the world as it is. We respond to cruelty with courage, to hatred with love,” she told the crowd.

What Does Christianity Say About Immigration?

Christian scripture builds directly on Jewish teachings of compassion and empathy for migrant communities.

Biblical scholars note that the early Christian community itself was often on the move, living in diaspora, and Jesus was born in a barn because his family couldn’t find shelter. He later fled to Egypt as a child refugee. This is central to the message of the gospel.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus lays it out plainly in a list of righteous deeds:

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” – Matthew 25:35

In this passage, Jesus isn’t just advocating kindness to strangers, He’s stating that upon the final judgment, the “sheep” – those who serve those in need, will be welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven.

It’s notable that Jesus specifically identifies Himself with the needy – the implication being that acts of compassion for vulnerable people are a direct extension of one’s faith. Later, He warns that how we treat the outsider is how we treat him:

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40

"Silence is Complicity"

On the ground in Los Angeles, Christian clergy are rallying against the immigration crackdown. Among them is Rev. Edward Anderson who said he felt a moral duty to stand up. “It is imperative that people of faith speak out because silence in the face of injustice is complicity,” he said.

Meanwhile in New York, the Rev. Jacqui Lewis, senior pastor of Middle Collegiate Church, is offering aid to immigrants and speaking out against ICE raids.

“We’re like Jesus — nonviolent,” said Lewis. But she stressed that nonviolent action “often means confronting people with the truth. ... We understand that social change has happened because people of faith and spiritual imagination guided the streets peacefully.”

Support For Crackdown Persists

Not all religious leaders agree, however. Among those backing the immigration crackdown is the Rev. Robert Jeffress, a Southern Baptist pastor and a longtime Trump ally.

“I support 100% President Trump’s goal of protecting our country from evildoers, whether from within or without," Jeffress said. "The president has authority from the Constitution and the Bible to do exactly what he’s doing.”

What Does Islam Say About Immigration?

Moving beyond the Christian perspective, what teachings does Islam offer about migrants? The Qur’an often emphasizes compassion for those on the move. In Surah Al-Baqarah, a list of righteous virtues includes:

“…give wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler…” – Qur’an 2:177

The Qur’an also reminds Muslims of their own migratory history – the Prophet Muhammad and his followers were forced to flee Mecca for Medina in the Hijra, a foundational event in Islam.

In the Sura an-Nisa, Muslims are again commanded to act charitably towards the "wayfarer" as one would their own family.

“do good to; parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer..”
Qur’an 4:36

Similar to the other Abrahamic faiths, scholars interpret the Qur’an message to be: treat the vulnerable wayfarer with generosity and protection, regardless of their background.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The modern politics of immigration are complex. Explosive population growth, global political turmoil, and massive wealth inequality have turned immigration into a complicated issue with no easy answers.

Nevertheless, it's interesting that the scriptural messages across the Abrahamic faiths have so much in common. That clergy from across the spiritual spectrum (Buddhist and Hindu leaders have joined the LA protests, too) are marching arm-in-arm against aggressive deportation policies speaks to the sense of responsibility they feel.

Where do you make of the issue?

Rocky Romans 13:1-7 states, “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”This passage makes it abundantly clear that we are to obey the government God places over us. God created government to establish order, punish evil, and promote justice (Genesis 9:6; 1 Corinthians 14:33; Romans 12:8). We are to obey the government in everything—paying taxes, obeying rules and laws, and showing respect. If we do not, we are ultimately showing disrespect towards God, for He is the One who placed that government over us. When the apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, he was under the government of Rome during the reign of Nero, perhaps the most evil of all the Roman emperors. Paul still recognized the Roman government’s rule over him. How can we do any less?

The next question is “Is there a time when we should intentionally disobey the laws of the land?” The answer to that question may be found in Acts 5:27-29, “Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 'We gave you strict orders not to teach in this Name,' he said. 'Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.' Peter and the other apostles replied: ‘We must obey God rather than men!'“ From this, it is clear that as long as the law of the land does not contradict the law of God, we are bound to obey the law of the land. As soon as the law of the land contradicts God’s command, we are to disobey the law of the land and obey God’s law. However, even in that instance, we are to accept the government’s authority over us. This is demonstrated by the fact that Peter and John did not protest being flogged, but instead rejoiced that they suffered for obeying God (Acts 5:40-42).

There's only three ways you are in a country of your choice (or not). You are natural born citizens, of the natives who were here first, or the child of said natural born citizens. You are immigrants, legal or not, or the child of said immigrants. You are slave, or the child of said slave. Both immigrant and slave are not natural born citizens, or their children. The majority of people in the US are immigrants, or the children of immigrants. Then slaves, or the children of slaves. The natural born citizens have been wiped out and forced into tiny encampments to live. by whom? By the immigrants and slaves. (mostly the immigrants). This land has never been unoccupied, just waiting for immigrants to move in. It was populated by many intelligent peoples. Some of us can lay claim to natural born rights, being a percentage of natural born blood in us, from combining with the natural born people. The first people who should have been expelled from the US for being immigrants should have been Melania Trump and Elon Musk.

The greater issue than simply the influx of immigrants to our nation is the fact that so many had been recently allowed to stay without any form of determining if their intentions are good. I would estimate that over 90 percent of the people reading this are of some form of immigrant descent, which in itself should be evidence of typical good intentions, but it is also likely that most of those reading had been welcomed (if sadly possibly not at the time) through some form of previously regularly required vetting that provided evidence of a deserving intention.

The Bible prioritizes trust in God, as human trust can be unreliable. Psalm 118:8-9 states, "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man." The Bible also encourages wisdom in relationships, acknowledging that not everyone has good intentions. Jesus advises, "Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16). We should also remember to beware of false teachings: The Bible warns against welcoming those who promote false teachings into one's home but also encourages hospitality and welcoming others, while emphasizing the importance of discernment and wisdom in relationships. This means extending trust thoughtfully and cautiously, based on character and guided by prayer and biblical principles.

Sadly, so many have been "welcomed" outside of any real follow-up to determine intentions and often on some invented temporary allowance that didn't provide a clear pathway to show that they should in fact be welcome to remain. They were sold a bad bill of goods that has left many good people in a state of constant fear of discovery and a requirement to remain in the shadows instead of in the light where most of them likely deserve to live and in positions that cause them not to be able to provide as easily for themselves- rather depending on others for support or simply doing without.

Hopefully our leadership will choose a path which grants amnesty to those who have lived in harmony with us for so long, regardless of the trail taken in desperation or fear of rejection to arrive, and provide a legitimate pathway to grant citizenship so that they may openly enjoy the benefits of not having to live looking over their shoulders in fear of being randomly removed from what is often the only life that have ever known. That being said, I am also hopeful that our government will continue to demonstrate the wisdom to remove those that should be looking over their shoulders because they are here and not deserving.

As usual people are twisting words to get the meaning they want. The Bible is talking legal Aliens. People whom had the right to travel though they be alien to the population. Not envaders coming illegally to any particular land. Illegals are invaders not immigrants. Immagrants are here legally and I welcome them all. However, the Bible is very clear about laws of the lands as well. They are to be followed when not breaking Biblical law. You can love someone while still demanding they follow the law. It's not anti-love to require laws to be followed! Do you still love your children when you discipline them for breaking the rules? Yes. Does God love us when He disaplined us? Yes. Stop using words incorrectly to make your point. Stop missquoting and changing the meaning of love to meet your meaning. This is factualy a Biblical view.

It seems that the author of this fake story is trying to cherry pick. Yes it says be kind to strangers but it does not say we should support them. And dont all religions say in one form or another to give to the government what is the governments and to give to their deity what is their deity's? And no religion says we are to care for a stranger for their lifetime.

Jesus said a lot about immigrants, and very clearly, too. Same as he said a lot about the poor and the sick, very very clearly. What Jesus said does not amount to a hill of beans to the people in charge of the USA. They are more concerned with OT rules about things they can use politically, while ignoring a lot of things equally rated as sins like mixed fabrics and shellfish. That's not religious, that's using religion as an excuse, and doing it really poorly and transparently, too. But nobody with any power calls them on it, so on it goes. If they get the afterlife they are expecting, they'll get the chance to debate with Jesus about whether he was wrong about the poor, sick, and lost. Some of these people will have the nerve to argue with him, too, I'd bet.

  1. Ari Joseph Bertine's Avatar Ari Joseph Bertine

If people were accepting and compassionate to immigrants, political groups would lose a major tool in controlling votes. They rely upon the illusion of a major threat to people so that they can pretend they are doing something protective and productive instead of just futzing around finding new ways to take our money. If it wasn't immigrants it would be LGBTQ+ people...oh wait, it's them too. But without those two groups, there would only be...well, probably Blacks and people of Asian descent...well, at any rate, I'm sure it would be super hard for them to find some group to turn everyone against without those easy pickings on the lowest branch.

Seriously, that's exactly what's behind all of this. Trump and his ilk couldn't care less about the groups they are declaring to be problematic and making up problems about them to bray all over the media to scare their followers. All that matters is that they appear to be doing something useful so that people will support them, and scaring people over something is the absolute easiest way to do that. Only when people are able to see through the illusion will they even have the mental quiet to think about what the reality is, and that's if we can get them to care whether what they believe is true or not. For most, being told it is true is enough for them, they don't want or need facts. Drama is more exciting, and peace is boring, so the illusion is the more attractive option.

Thank you so much for your opinion. It’s wonderful that people voted for a change last November with the way things were going here in the United States. That is not a true statement. Lawful legal naturalized citizens of the USA are as safe as any other legal citizen. The left leaning media will have people wanting to believe differently because that’s the way they work to suit their narrative to create unrest with those who are still finding it difficult that they didn’t win the election. They possibly hope that there will be continued uprisings/protests for the next 3.5 years in the hope that they will win next time, but in reality the majority of this nation are getting tired of all the destruction from these protests and are shooting themselves in the foot. Those who genuinely love the US are sick and tired of what are called “woke” and “progressives” and just don’t like what they are seeing. They are also not happy with all the looting, homelessness, and illegal immigrants in many sanctuary states. I of course could be totally wrong, and many will say I am, so let’s see what the outcome is in the next election in 3.5 years when Donald Trump won’t be on the ticket.

Most of what I am seeing is people being arrested have legal standing and if there are any infractions, thy are civil or minor traffic violations. I am also seeing rounding up crowds with no individual due process (warrants, probable cause). If you broke up a major human trafficing ring, why is nobody jumping up and down blowing their horn? ICE is working on a quota system now, and an edict of 3,000 arrests a day or risk losing your job because you are in the bottom 10 percent does not equal due process or probable cause.

I find this whole discussion profoundly disturbing and depressing. Where is the recognition that we are all one? That of love they neighbor? That we should welcome the wayfarer and see that s/he is, like us a stranger in a short passing life. The concept of the web of life is common in indigenous religions as well as in the religions of the "Book" and the so-called heretical apocrypha, Zoroastrianism , Manicheism, Mandaenism, etc. Chief Seattle has been quoted beautifully saying this: "“Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.” There is another quote for those who are "of the Book" but characterize non-White peoples as dangerous and inferior (typical of the Confederacy and today by our administration who warned they were diluting our blood). It is also based on Chief Seattle's speech probably modified by several translators, but still appropriate:

Every part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.

We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man, all belong to the same family.

The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each ghostly reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father. The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give to the rivers the kindness you would give any brother.

If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also receives his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell you our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.

Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.

This we know the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

The world of God does not contain borders. We are all one people. Borders are a human construction meant to divide and control. Should crime be allowed, not against fellow people. Crossing a border should not be a crime in itself. Do we need citizenship? Yes, the way we have constructed our society, it is important to keep things organized, but it is a civil construction, not a biblical or spiritual construction. It belongs to humans, not divinity.

If there was a pack of rabid feral dogs outside my house trying to bite people and they escaped into my house without my permission to avoid getting bitten and killed, then yeah, I would be startled and kind of put out that they were there suddenly, but I would still accept their presence because I'm not a barbarian who throws people to rabid dogs to be killed.

If I made rules saying "you can come inside to escape the rabid dogs, but you have to take a number and wait in line while I do a background check and see if you're eligible and it'll be anywhere from six months to a year before you can come in, so just keep dodging those teeth", I'm pretty sure I'd have people sneaking in my back door because why the hell would they not when they are going to die if they stay out there. The people "sneaking" into America are coming here because their families are threatened with death where they lived already, and there isn't a safe waiting room provided while we take a year or longer to let them into the safety of our country.

If I was a father and I had children whose lives depended upon my getting them into the US, and I found out that I could a) do it legitimately from home and have drug cartels and corrupt government thugs threaten our lives daily while we wait, or b) risk arrest but have my kids not get shot to death in their sleep...pretty sure I'd make the choice that countless parents have had to make to be here illegally.

So whose fault is it that it's illegal, or that legalization takes so long? Maybe we should find out where the real blame belongs.

I feel that many people are missing the point of the deportations. All is true and loving of the stranger, traveler, needy. What the deportations are about, are people who have entered our country ILLEGALLY. Illegal Immigrants who have committed crimes. Many of these violent protesters are paid to be there, by George Soros and the Illuminati. My family waited YEARs to come to this Country LEGALLY. We have family in 4 different continents because not everyone could come in when they were trying to leave poverty and starvation in their native country. We HELP those in need, not give them free phones, health care, housing and Money when we leave Citizens, Veterans, homeless and destitute. ICE is rounding up ILLEGAL CRIMINALS For decades, other Administrations have dine this and there was never an issue or question about it. Trump does it and people protest it. I just dint get it. Its so sad in so many levels. I Pray for Peace

    1. John Robert Peters's Avatar John Robert Peters

Withhold your judgement lest you too be judged. The vast majority are not criminals nor threats of any kind. They are generally hard working, honest and religious people who are seeking a better life for their children and sanctuary from threats in their native land. They are called illegal because of the complexity of the entry process, some are here pending approval of the papers they filed at the border. To broad brush accuse them all of criminality is seriously ill informed. Other administrations did deport many immigrants, but not through ICE Gestapo type raids of schools, workplaces, and places of worship. They did not have masked thugs dragging people away nor did they purposely separate children from their parents. Other administrations did not attack and arrest Federal Officials for questioning the policies and tactics. Other administrations did not strip a whole ethnic group of respect and dignity nor herd them into detention centers fenced and protected by razor wire or deport them without due process to dangerous prisons. Well that isn't true. The 3rd Reich did all of those things. You might pray that that does not become the way of the US; to become the 4th Reich.

Maria, If this were about rounding up felons and those who entered the country fraudulently by one means or another, then I would agree with you. But the the idological rhetoric by the president and the far-right politicians (and their minions) does not match what ICE is doing. People who entered legally and let a VISA expire or were late to a hearing to renew the VISA are what is being "rounded up" and some are deported to countries that were not their country of origin. The majority of arrests in the last few weeks are of people with no criminal record (a VISA violation is CIVIL, not CRIMINAL) only because of the edict of 3,000 arrests per day or lose your job(s). Some are even green card holders whose only offense has been a traffic violation. I also pray for peace.

I'd like to remind everyone of something everyone reminds us of.

USA is a democratic Republic. We're not a theocracy. Everyone knows that. Everyone says that.

It doesn't matter that the Bible says we should respect the law and culture of other nations while we visit. All that matters is our non theocratic laws concerning illegal immigration.

Surely it's insane to demand USA follow biblical teachings while demanding we don't.

It's weird when the left uses the Bible they don't believe to convince the people they say are idiots for believing it how to interpret the document they say is fake so they can get their political whims fulfilled.

But that’s not what this is about. It’s about what religion says about immigrants and what the hardline religious zealots are actually doing. It’s not surprising that they are mostly hypocritical. Like so many other parts of their holy books, they embrace part of it while completely ignoring the different parts. If God is truly going to judge them on how they’ve followed the “HOLY” law laid down in there, I think they will be unpleasantly surprised at how they shall be judged.

I am not certain that ALL these scriptures that are referred to have anything to do with what is occurring today. Like the Judges, you are all interpreting what you want it to say. No issue assisting a person in NEED. NONE of these illegals were in need of were being suppressed. If they were, Then answer me WHY would you be flying the FLAG of the country you HATE? It's all a set up. WE ALL KNOW that they wanted FREE stuff. I BET NO ONE ON HERE would OPEN their door, or life, as you all state, to help ANY of them. THEN answer me WHY none the so helpers here were NOT helping your FELLOW man BEFORE ALL THIS MESS? Why were you NOT assisting your brother/sister in need? The VETERANS, Homeless?you're all talk. HAD one of these foreigners, as you all like to call them, had committed a CRIME against YOU, your family, you'd all have a different view. It is NOT all MEXICANS AS YOU SATE. We have had illegals coming here from over 150 nations. So back up your facts. These ARE CRIMINALS. THEY all came in ILLEGALLY. Had they wanted to enter, then DO IT the right way. GOD did not say Welcome, to his people, to go and commit CRIMES, as we ALL know these people have. WISE up, and stop interpreting the Bible, as you wish for your own agenda.

    1. Martin L Stigleman's Avatar Martin L Stigleman

You say things like, "These people" and "They wanted free stuff", and you bring up how people weren't helping "Veterans" and "Homeless". You straight out said that the scriptures of the Bible should be read in a way that essentially ignores them. At a guess, you are a white, Christian, aren't you? I say that because that is the demographic that wants to group everyone together as a way to "prove" themselves right while tossing away very the tenets of their Faith. You say "THEY all came in ILLEGALLY.". NO, THEY DID NOT!!! ICE is grabbing anyone with brown skin, and that includes many AMERICAN CITIZENS. Also, a large number of those they are arresting are people who are legal immigrants who are working toward citizenship. They even recently arrested a STATE SENATOR because he demanded they show identification to prove they were ICE Agents and not just guys in masks. "Free stuff"? REALLY?!!! Do you have any clue what the life of an immigrant in America is like? Those working in the agricultural industry typically work 12 to 14 hour days and the average pay is around $5 an hour. You think none of them were being suppressed? Not only were they underpaid and overworked, but they were treated like garbage for doing it. Yes, crime is higher when there is a larger number of immigrants in an area...because some of them have hungry children to feed...some of them have to fight to protect their families or themselves from racists. But overall, by population percentage there are LESS immigrants who have any criminal past than there are white American criminals in this country. Also, not all immigrants are here because they hate the country they came from. Many (especially from Mexico) are here because there are no jobs there. Many of the immigrants who are being accosted are here as students, PAYING their tuition...LEGALLY. Some from South America are here because the drug cartels have made it too dangerous to stay in their homes. Some still love their country but hate how their leaders are destroying it...as so many of us today can understand. Oh...and to answer your claim, there ARE some of us who have worked to help them. When I was younger and lived in a small apartment I worked at a factory that had a few immigrant workers and more than once I gave someone a place to sleep for a couple days. I honestly don't think I have ever had house guests who were as respectful as they were, and my place was always clean and I always had a good meal because they appreciated the help.

No press releases, becasue the thousands that have been arrested have all been (if anything) legal, or if any offenses, they are minor traffic violations, and there are many of those stories out there. It can't be media bias, because Trump has made sure that the mainstream media is only reporting the stuff that meets his agenda, and I don't see anything coming from them either. I believe, that all people who enter any foreign country, they should do so legally. If people argue, that there was an exigent circumstance, to illegally enter a foreign country, then they should still find a legal way to correct this immigration issue.

When I once lived & worked in NY, I participated with a joint operation with ICE. My specific illegal alien had been deported & illegally returned 4 times. He was convicted of, only 4 felony sex crimes. He committed a 5th felony of having sex with his daughter.

In Family Court, the Judge asked the mother, what she felt about her husband having sex with their daughter. The mother stated, ‘if the father can’t teach our daughter about sex education, then who can’ ?

I’m sure you have the statistics to verify the tax paying status and criminal records of every single one of the people you and the American Gestapo detained to ensure their due process was observed… of all the people you detained, how many were felons? Not many. How many were upright people who were working to become citizens? Grabbing people outside of courthouses, in churches, in schools? How very christian… should people come in legally? Absolutely! Is it acceptable to have felons in our country? NO! (It’s more egregious to have an adjudicated felon in the White House, than to have a few migrant workers picking produce to feed the country, at least in my opinion.) I am also a highly educated American.(retired college professor), but if you’re picking up people because they have different skin tones, then you deserve to called epithets.

You might also note that said felon has regularly hired illegal immigrants for his various businesses, paying them less than minimum wage. Many of our Congress people and judges have illegal nannies for their children. Our Felon in Chief suddenly realized that the ICE Gestapo project was costing his farm supporters who no longer had migrant workers to harvest their crops and his other supporters complained they couldn't get their day laborers for construction jobs, to mow their lawns, and do the landscaping for their homes...waivers were approved and therre were no "checks" of criminal history their any more than there were when ICE detained them. Legal citizens were rounded up for looking like immigrants and government officials have been arrested for questioning ICE and Homeland "Security". Yesterday a NYC candidate for Mayor was arrested wo warrant by the masked thugs for having the audacity of doing his job in immigration court. I grew up in NY, Brooklyn, and went to school w those children of immigrants; I dated them; had many friends among the hispanic and black children. I was even bussed to a school in a predominantly black community. That was my best school time ever. When I returned to the local predominantly white paraochial school I was bullied daily and insulted regularly for being part Irish and having a father who was Lutheran instead of Catholic. My father was in the NYC Police Force as were several of my Uncles. They never complained of the immigrant communities but they did of other parts of the city with mostly white and poor populations. I lived in Brooklyn, Prospect Heights, greenwich Village, and Coney Island; went to school in Greenwich Village and often went to Harlem. Never had a problem with the immigrants, Blacks, Hassidim, but was still bullied by Christians for my wild ideas of equality and love. ICE is a Gestapo like creature since they act as if they are above not only the law of the land but also the laws of dignity and respect for others. I must disagree with your characterizations of your NY experience . You may recall the past atrocities against black and immigrant individuals committed by the NYC police. My father was on the task forces that investigated them. I will not repeat his characterizations of their actions that did not make their way into the newspapers. People, even police and ICE, can be hideous when the group think takes over and someone directs burdgeoning hate against others.

My ancestors migrated from France 🇫🇷 when Virginia was still a colony. That’s my maternal side. I’m also 3rd generation Pacific Islander too. On the French side, they were Huguenot seeking refuge from the religious tyranny that they experienced. My Pacific Islander side became citizens by serving in U.S. military. My point is that unless we’re native Americans or Black with slavery in our blood, we really don’t belong in America.

I agree that if they are here illegally they should be arrested and deported. People need to stop saying “Undocumented immigrants” and use the correct terminology, illegal immigrates. Illegal means illegal period.

      1. Patricia Ann Gross's Avatar Patricia Ann Gross

Most people who are "undocumented" are not so by a criminal, but a civil offense (overstaying a VISA, for example) and therefore as a civil matter does not make them "illegal." Most of the people being rounded up, have no criminal history, including immigration "paperwork." Some are even being snatched outside the courthouses where they were putting their paperwork in order.

        1. Lionheart's Avatar Lionheart

Well, if anyone has overstayed their visa they are now living here illegally, so it does make them illegal.

Many who illegally came across the border might not have a criminal history, but nevertheless they are living here illegally.

If they attended a hearing at a courthouse and left that courthouse with no papers granting them the process to obtain legal residency then they will be detained and returned to their country of origin.

          🦁❤️

          1. Patricia Ann Gross's Avatar Patricia Ann Gross

An expired visa is a CIVIL, not a criminal offense, and therefore is not classified as "illegal." If you really want to play semantics, that's fine, but rounding up people who are at the courthouse to get their paperwork in order is not justifiable by any stretch of compassion, empathy, or imagination. Now people are afraid to go to the courthouse for their scheduled meetings for fear of being handcuffed and carted away. Are you sure all of your paperwork is in order, and you never missed or been late for a hearing or a court appearance? As long as you have never had so much as a traffic or parking ticket, you MAY be ok, otherwise, you need to keep looking over your shoulder for the masked ICE agent.

      1. John Robert Peters's Avatar John Robert Peters

And we continue to oppress them, steal their sacred lands, and pollute their water. All with the active and passive support of our government...of some of the people, by some of the people, and for some of the people.

And the "Indians", the "Native Americans" and whoever came before them killed en masse and enslaved their enemies and took (stole) their land and rivers and forest's to build their territories. 100's of times throughout the millenniums.

Over and over throughout history. Right here on this continent. Right there in Illinois and Arizona and California, everywhere across the continent and around the world.

        So?

That was then this is now and anyone that thinks it can't happen or won't happen again is a fool.

But for the moment, the USA is the best country in the world with the best government with capitalism. Capitalism is King.

Otherwise, why would everyone, from around the world, want to break into the USA?

No one is trying to break into, for example, Africa, (any of them) North Korea, Peru or Somalia or Afghanistan.

If you give the power to the government you will absolutely become a slave...again.

I think you will find, Lady Colleen, that this country was originally built on Settlers.

Jesus wept. The indigenous people here were not the savages you were taught in school. The Noble Savage was just BS to denigrate the people who were already in the land that was taken by the settlers (or invaders). Many of the people had complex societies with laws and governments. Their religions were primarily based on nature and they had a complex and generally beautiful cosmology with ceremonies to honor their Gods, Nature, Ancestors, and the souls of the animals and vegetation that fed and housed them. In South America the Spanish along w their Christian priests tortured and murdered the indigenous people for their gold and silver. In the USA and Mexico and Canada a similar story was played for the land and any wealth that could be found. Their children were taken from them and placed in a Christian "School" where they were forced to forsake their parents, culture, language and traditions and become closer to good white Christians. Many, we know were killed in the process of re-education. Your concept of the settlers/invaders creating a nation where there was none is ill informed and short sighted, as well as insulting to the surviving indigenous peoples everywhere. You may benefit from a little study of anthropology, native religions, and real history before it is completely erased by our "Chriustian National" government.

Settlers were all immigrants or the children of immigrants.

        1. Lionheart's Avatar Lionheart

Actually, Lady Stephanie that is not s true statement. many people have the same misunderstanding. The land that is now known as the United States of America, was an unincorporated land, which means no one "owned/had control" of it. People migrated here, they were the early settlers not immigrants. An immigrant is someone who comes from one established country to live in another established country, hence the difference between migrants and immigrants. Thank you for your comment.

LH, Your history "lesson" is significantly flawed. If the US were a deserted island, your argument might make sense, however, there were people living here in communities that had been established. They had lives, livlihoods, a governmental and societal hierarchy, and their own religions. Most of them lived peacefully in "tribes." Just because the European or Asian establishmet had not recognized it as an "established" country, did not make them any less than one.

This northern continent was still an unincorporated land that also had nomadic tribes that had also settled here, with many of them warring with one another, irrespective of the type of symbolic religion of nature they had. The governmental and societal hierarchy differed from tribe to tribe. The early pilgrims were still classed as settlers.

LH - by who? The historians who wrote the history? Didn't you know that history is ALWAYS written by the winners. It was a conquest. The "nomadic tribes" you refer to were the indigenous people of this country. Who was responsible for "incorporating" the land? There wasn't a country "registry" back then.

Yes, we are currently aware of 574 different indigenous tribes. Some tribes migrated across the Bering Strait settling into North America all at different times ranging from 30,000-12,000 years ago. Some others people (tribes) also migrated north from South America. It’s believed, from modern day genetics, many of those northern tribes came from Asia. As far as I’m aware there wasn’t one particular indigenous tribe that was a dominating force claiming all the land of the Americas to be theirs. They must have got used to other peoples in the form of different tribes over the thousands of years infiltrating North America.

As we know, Europeans settled into North America much later of course.
