kehlani
Kehlani is regularly under scrutiny for their support of Palestine and criticism of Israel.

Citing recent attacks on Jews in Boulder, Colorado, a group of high-profile San Diego-based Jewish organizations say they’re withdrawing from the city’s upcoming LGBTQ+ Pride festivities, citing the presence of singer/songwriter Kehlani as a headliner.

Kehlani, who uses they/them pronouns, is a vocal supporter of the Palestinian resistance movement. Kehlani’s 2024 music video for the song “Next 2 U” opens with the message “LONG LIVE THE INTIFADA,” and shows them singing in front of a Palestinian flag.

Kehlani also frequently reposts videos of Palestinians asking for aid and medical assistance, and in a recent video even declared “f*\* Israel, f** Zionism.”

Leaving Pride Behind

A letter signed by members of the Jewish community, including synagogues and activist groups, condemns the decision to allow Kehlani to headline the Pride event.

“In light of San Diego Pride’s decision to allow musical artist Kehlani to remain a headliner at this year’s Pride Festival despite Kehlani’s repeated amplification of violent antisemitic rhetoric, all participating Jewish organizations and synagogues — many of which have marched with, volunteered for or supported Pride for years — will be withdrawing from the 2025 event due to serious safety concerns,” the letter reads.

“As a result, there will be no organized Jewish presence at San Diego Pride this year.”

The Jewish groups pulling out of San Diego’s Pride represent some of the most high-profile Jewish groups in the city, including:

  • Jewish Federation of San Diego
  • Anti-Defamation League of San Diego
  • Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (JCC)
  • Temple Emanu-El of San Diego
  • Congregation Beth Israel
  • Congregation Dor Hadash
  • Tifereth Israel Synagogue
  • Temple Adat Shalom

They say that though they wanted to attend, San Diego Pride left them no choice when they opted to keep Kehlani on as a headliner.

“Now more than ever, Pride should be a celebration of inclusion and solidarity, not a platform for divisive voices that incite hatred and violence,” explained Heidi Gantwerk, President and CEO of Jewish Federation of San Diego County. “As we’ve seen in D.C. and Boulder, when antisemitism is ignored or tolerated, it fuels a culture that leads to violence. We cannot wait for tragedy to strike our own community — again — before we act.”

Prior Controversy

This is not the first time Kehlani has faced backlash for speaking out against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Earlier this year, their scheduled performance at Cornell University was abruptly canceled by university president Michael Kotlikoff. Kotlikoff accused Kehlani of "[espousing] antisemitic, anti-Israel sentiments in performances, videos, and on social media," and their performance at New York City’s Pride was also abruptly canceled last month for similar reasons.

In response, Kehlani posted on Instagram, "I am not antisemitic, nor anti-Jew. I am anti-genocide, I am anti the actions of the Israeli government, I am anti an extermination of an entire people, I am anti the bombing of innocent children, men, women—that’s what I’m anti.”

For now, it appears Kehlani is still headlining San Diego Pride. And in response to the ongoing backlash, San Diego Pride’s board of directors issued a statement:

“We honor the value of artistic integrity, the importance of free expression and the role that artists play in shaping culture, challenging systems and amplifying voices while respecting each other’s differences.”

I don’t believe in genocide. I don’t believe in killing children because they may become terrorists someday. I also don’t think that all Jews want the genocide of the Palestinians. It’s time for Netanyahu and trump to go to the old folks home, and take putin with them!

Ironic that Palestine and Iran were two countries who welcomed Jewish refugees escaping the holocaust, when the US refused to take them. This fact raises a lot of questions...

Iran and Palestine were not Islamic states during WWII. Iran was democratic and had a very western culture. Palestine was a British colony. Iran was not an Islamic state until the overthrow of the Shah by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979. The British granted the land for the creation of the State of Israel and the US financed and provided military support in 1947. Bordering nations were unappreciative of this action. Know your history before criticizing actions.

Ok I get to be the first on this one. Up the Jew of the day! People have the right to protest. They have the right to participate or not participate in this or any other event. But some American Jews have a problem... they can't separate the country of Israel from its right wing government, and they can't separate legitimate dialogue and criticism of either from what is anti-Semitic and what is not. Antisemitism can encompass a lot of things... from physical aggression as we have seen in DC and other places recently to something as simple as "why does my local Kroger no longer carry Hanukkah candles, or why does my local Kroger no longer line shelving at Passover, and why does my local Kroger put out non-kosher for Passover foods out (at a higher than usual price) and then have a huge sale on jars and jars of gefilte fish and boxes and boxes matzoh for everyday use for months after? I've had conversations with the ever evolving managers at my local store... they don't get it. Another example is the spell check on this software which wants to capitalize and condense words like "Antisemitism," and highlights as errors words with a meaning, emphasis, and even "nuance" as well, not kosher. Similarly there are things that some American Jews don't get... (keeping in mind that most of the Jews I know on a day to day basis, who like me, are unaffiliated so my perspective here comes from a certain place.) What is anti-semetic and what is not is for many people as complicated as what is kosher and what is not? A chaq'un son gout... especially in the reform movement, where one may have a kosher meal at home on Friday but go to brunch with friends on Saturday or Sunday and celebrate the phrase "another Jew for bacon!" American Jews are not a monolith. Which is why I find this threat to not participate etc by some people as "who cares?" Some are going to criticize and refrain from or even protest this particular entertainer's involvement and personal perspective, regardless and okay fine. Also, who made you so important that anyone should care? This has been the big mistake, and some study will prove my point. LGBTQ+/- this that or the other Pride is important... all people are included and all are welcome...and sometimes one needs to put aside one's differences to support the bigger issue... One may also find that the person they are so hung up on is a real person, with a legitimate experience, and a legitimate perspective, one that may differ, but if one digs deep enough and studies enough... one might just find that the perspective is possibly correct, and then one has to wrestle with g-d...which is something many folks are not willing to do.... Pride is not the place for American Jews to take this issue... "we're mad, so if we don't get our way, we are taking our toys home...." Please. This is a big event. If you show up great. If you don't show up fine. If the media wants to make a big deal about the situation, that's what they do, and some may get their 15 seconds of fame being interviewed, which no one will care about a year from now. Big event, big picture people... Mr Netanyahu is never gonna stand up and say " Jews of America, thank you for fighting antisemitism by pulling out of that parade...." He might stand up and use American Jews as an example: he is not pro- LGBTQ+. He is pro himself staying in power long enough to avoid his pending prosecution.... Funny...sounds a lot what happened here, doesn't it? And so we have a convicted FELON heading out administrative branch who has broken his oath to the Constitution too many times to even prosecute. Wake up people...! The struggle is real and no one can afford to turn allies to enemies.

Peace...out...tk The Israeli government is the place to take the issue

Hello people. What you are seeing happen here is exactly what happens when you have a [insert religous] Nationalism State. Being critical of Israel and what they are doing to the citizens in the Gaza Strip is NOT anti-semitism, because what Israel is doing has nothing to do with the Jewish religion. It is a political war fought for power over Hamas, and they are blind to the collateral damage. Does anything sound familiar (i.e., close to home) here? People here that are critical of the Christian Right are labeled as "woke" and anti-American. While I would support the Jewish efforts to reclaim their "promised land," I cannot turn my back on the attrocities and genocide that is happening in the Palastinian Region. Yes, Hamas is a terrorist group that made serious strikes in Israel, but the way Israel is retaliating is showing no mercy for those without a dog in the fight, which makes them no better than Hamas. Israel and the Israeli government is a political system. Judaism is a religion and that is the basis for Christianity and Islam. Please don't call a protest against Israel, "antisemitic," because it only shows that you are confusing the two. Israel, by the way, has a signifcant Muslim and Christian population as well.

As a minister ordained through UL, I find it troubling how often the comment sections on these posts turn into places of division, not dialogue. Instead of ministers coming together in prayer, reflection, and support, it often becomes a space for venting frustration, exchanging hostility, and reinforcing division, whether around LGBTQ issues, faith traditions, or political identities.

I'm deeply grateful to UL for giving me the path to serve my community. But when I come here hoping to find inspiration, encouragement, or ideas for better ministry, I often find the opposite. There's very little here that uplifts, heals, or strengthens.

I don’t come here to point out the speck in someone else’s eye. I come seeking insight on how to better serve the hurting, the grieving, and the forgotten. So I ask sincerely: Where do ministers go to find the strength and support we need? And more importantly, how can we begin to build that kind of space for each other right here?

    1. Ari Joseph Bertine's Avatar Ari Joseph Bertine

I don't know if it's possible to do right here. The articles that ULC posts are deliberately spun to be sensational and upsetting to someone, and they know full well that their membership consists of people with differing attitudes that will blow up in the comments. That is engagement that creates more page views, thus more ad views. They lose money if we don't argue here. Dialoguing takes time to set up and causes less knee-jerk posting that brings more page views, so it just wouldn't be as profitable. I would suggest starting a Discord channel to build the type of community of mutual support you are looking for...and I'd be interested, too.

This isn't about faith, it's about the deliberate and systematic murder of innocent civilians. Behavior like this does not show strength, it will not result in peace (unless you count the peace you get when everyone on all sides are dead), all they will achieve is to create more enemies, more strife and more death.

I think all of this is just more political maneuvering. Israel has the right to protect itself, but it does not have the right to slaughter innocents. Hamas is a problem, Palestinians are not. Then attacks into other Muslim Countries and now Iran. This is not a war to protect Israel this is a war to eliminate an ancient adversary. Christians are supposed to be the the ones who abhor war and the death of innocents. He served with the Green Berets and in the 1970s and early 1980s he was a part-time NATO liaison officer in several European countries. While off-duty on one of these tours, he visited Wewelsburg Castle, which was used by the SS and Heinrich Himmler, and is said to have performed a satanic ritual there. He is also said to have established contacts to right-wing extremists in Europe as the leader of a group called "Monarch", which may have been connected to Operation Gladio. Monarch Monarch is a series of programming methods of mind control used by numerous organizations for covert purposes. It is a continuation of MKUltra. The Monarch methods are astonishingly sadistic, as its entire purpose is to traumatize the victim, and the expected results are horrifying: The creation of a mind controlled slave who can be triggered at anytime to perform any action required by the handler. On 10/27/23, Hamas (Muslim terrorists) with the full support of the "civilians" in Gaza invaded Israel and killed over 2,000 civilians, mostly at a music festival and in agricultural villages.

Israel has a population of around 10 million and is the size of New Jersey. to put this attack in perspective, those 2,000 killed would be equivalent to 60,000 Americans, or about 20 times the number killed during the 9/11 attacks Muslim terrorist attacks.

In addition to those killed, hundreds of civilians were kidnapped, tortured, and killed.

This is who and what Israel is fighting.

And let's put this in more perspective. There, never, ever, was a country called Palestine. Palestine is the name of the Land of Israel that the then occupying Romans gave the land because of the Jew repeatedly rebelling against Roman rule.

As for the "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free." is a call for the creation of yet another Arab/Muslim country, this one from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. In other words this is a call to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.

    1. Warren Calvin Wall's Avatar Warren Calvin Wall

Palestine was a British colony before 1947. The British granted the land to the Zionists to create the State of Israel. The US financed and provided military support for them to occupy the land. The surrounding Arab nations were not happy about it. The Muslims were VERY unhappy about it and fought over it. None of the Arab nations wanted the Palestinians in their countries, just like no European countries wanted the Jews. One of the conditions for the creation of the Zionist Israeli State was that they take the Jews. Zionism is not a Jewish idea. It is a Marxist idea.

First off, if California fell off into the sea 98 percent of the rest of this country would barely miss it at all. We would, at a minimum, once again to buy a gas can that actually works. Second, when do the people that keep their sexuality and lack of pronouns to themselves get a parade? Nevermind, we are probably to boring. Third, I would bet that this intellectual superstar couldn't find Israel on a map or even New Jersey for that matter. And fourth, why do so many people feel that their sole purpose in life is to go out of their way to find something to be outraged about every waking moment of the day and then try to make the rest of us miserable?Life must be exhausting for them. Frankly it is exhausting even trying to understand them. Perhaps I am just an old man, but I suspect that I don't fit into the same "demographic" as this person's audience so I can honestly say with complete sincerity, that I have never heard of this person before today and based on what I am reading, I can only wonder what tragedy fell upon her to poison her in such a hateful way. I will pray for her to find some inner peace.
Finally, the Jewish people have been persecuted for millennia, nothing that comes out of this person's mouth is going to change that one way or another. Sorry, but that is a fact. That said, I am certain, now that she has spoken up, the Jewish people will all stop, give up the dream of being left alone and just surrender those who seek to cleanse them from existence. As to the current state of international relations, I find it so, well frankly, laughable that this person feels so empowered to speak and act this way here in the nice and safe United States. Try behaving like that in Gaza city, Tehran, Baghdad, Riyadh or any of nearly any place in the region. I suspect she wouldn't take long in assuming room temperature. What a great country we live in.

None of those holidays have anything at all to do with being a male or sexuality in the least. They are about our independence from a tyrannical government or to remember those men AND women that have sacrificed their lives so you can live in a free country. Perhaps you should have payed more attention in elementary school. Why do some people insist on declaring their sexual proclivities in a public manner? You do what is good for you and your consensual partner. I don't care what that is and neither does the majority of the planet. The polite thing to do is to keep private things private. Your feelings on the subject are no more valid than that of literally anyone else. I don't have to agree with someones bedroom behaviors, but that doesn't mean you need to shove them in front of everyone's face. I guess I will never understand the need to broadcast that information. Back in the 90s, the military had a "don't ask-don't tell" policy. It made perfect sense then, it still does. No one wants to erase anyone from history. Our history will be doomed to repeat it self if we attempt to erase it. Good and bad. Screaming at each other on street corners and being constantly outraged that other do not celebrate certain behaviors, solves nothing.

This is a response by purveyors of certain statements that they are not antisemitic. These statements include “long live the antifada”, “f* Israel”, and “f* Zionism”. These are in fact bigoted statements that I believe are motivated by blatant hatred or ignorance which may be well meaning or not.

I see two main components of Jewishness, namely religious belief and ethnicity. The state of Israel is a political entity that serves as a homeland for Jews by ethnicity and/or Jews by religious belief. Needless to say, there is a huge overlap. The immigration policies of Israel basically say that if you’re a Jew, you can be a citizen of Israel. I think the availability of refuge is wonderful, especially considering the typical historic mistreatment of Jews by both Christian and Muslim majority nations.

This mistreatment was most extreme in the Holocaust, where six million Jews were murdered along with five million others. In relative terms, over half of the Jewish population of Europe and one third of the Jewish population of the world was destroyed. This genocide provided additional motivation for the existing Zionist dream of a Jewish state that would always be a refuge for Jews, where immigration restrictions would not apply.

If someone thinks that it’s OK for Christian or Muslim states to exist, but that it’s not OK for a single Jewish state to exist, that constitutes bigotry, whether or not ethnic or religious hatred exists in the heart of that person.

The State of Israel is a colonizer that stole land from the indigenous peoples of that area. The Zionist people stole land and murdered people. It is still going on today.

Land has been stolen long before WWII. Try reading The Hundred Years War on Palestine to better understand what has happening, when this began, and what is continuing to happening.

Knowing the history of that parcel of land does not make me antisemitic, it makes me educated and capable of critical thinking.

Zionism is not the entirety of Judiasm. It is ethnocultural nationalist movement that’s aim was to establish a homeland in Palestine with as much land as possible, as many Jews, and as few Palestinian Arabs as possible. They were colonizers and continue to brutally colonize that parcel of land. (Think about what colonizers did to the indigenous peoples of the US)

Again, the facts do not make me antisemitic. They make me more aware of the nuances of this issue.

Israel was founded on stolen land. Its owners still want to come home. Israel continues to commit genocide against them and indiscriminately wage war against others in the regions whose land it wants to steal. Israel doesn’t deserve to exist. Not because its Jewish but becyits a violent, killing, thoroughly corrupt pack of killers.

Just a mention of the little fact that Palestine was under British rule before granting the land to the Marxist Zionists to establish the State of Israel. Most of the fighting involved in the establishment of Israel was with neighboring Arab countries that did not want the Palestinians in their countries. The Palestinians were pretty much universally disliked in the Middle East and that still applies today. After WWII, the Europeans didn't want the Jews because of their practices. Over the centuries, Jews have been run out of pretty much every country that they went to in Europe due to violating that country's laws. Especially financial laws. No Arab countries wanted Palestinians due to their violations of their laws and demands of their governments. Both groups were considered undesirable.

    Tell ya what.

I don't care what you do so long as you don't hurt others, or try and shove Your ideas in the minds of children, especially using "teachers" in the schools behind the parents back. Or, harm old people in Any way.

You want a parade. OK, You get the permits and You pay for it. No tax money.

But do everyone a solid and don't allow homely, fat, dirty, smelly, repulsive men on bicycles ride around naked. It is just disgusting for everyone that has to travel on the street.

Let them protest. But its a a big nothingburger as there is no such thing as a country or people called Palestinian. It didnt exist before 1942. The proper name for them is BEDOUIN and this is how they are listed in the Libraries of the Middle East. Not to mention that there are thousands of historical artifacts that clearly show Israel right where it is now and considerably larger by a factor of three.

The ignorance of some who are commenting is beyond, beyond.

    1. WHY does an area where people are living have be considered "Recognized" as a "Country" before people give a f'ing damn? That is one I read in ONE comment. That Palestine is not a recognized country. So the f* what? People have been LIVING in the area called "Palestine" for CENTURIES. Get it? Centuries. It is not like they moved there when "Israel" became a recognized Country by WESTERN IDEALS. The people were already there! It is f* in the Bible. And if you don't know, then YOU don't know the Bible as you think you do.

    2. Palestinians say kill all the Jewish people. BULL F'ING CRAP! Go read some History before you come up with that tired excuse again. Please. Israel has been wasnting Palestine from BEFORE Israel was a Country. I believe the term used for that area is "Burning Earth" and if YOU don't know what that means, ignorant.

    3. Kehlani has not from what I've seen ever said kill Jewish people. Seems there are many who cannot use their higher critical thinking to separate the Jewish PEOPLE from Israeli Government. Are the People from the U.S. the U.S. Government? Then WHY ASSume the same for other Countries? Way beyond ignorant.

    4. For those speaking out against the LGBTQIA+ Community. Why? What HARM have they done to YOU? Instead you won't ask, WHAT have YOU done to the LGBTQIA+ Community. You won't ask, because deep inside you know you are nothing but a coward. That is not an attack but a Truth that many do NOT want to ask and face. Pity. I pity the situation and not the person, YOU do NOT deserve any type of pity or sympathy when you display your HATE so openly.

    5. I am neither for Israel or against Israel. I am FOR ALL LIFE and it is SACRED. For those who are commenting other than that...Shame.

Anti Zionism is NOT Anti Semitism. Zionist Israel is committing genocide on Palestinian men, women and children through war and starvation. This is wrong! “We were just following orders.”, was the defense of every Nazi at Nurnberg. Were some of the holocaust survivors taking notes on how it’s done?

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. I am ethnically Jewish. I spit on zionism and the so-called state of Israel, which is actually Occupied Palestine.

In 2019, Mr Netanyahu told colleagues in his ruling Likud party: "Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas… This is part of our strategy - to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank." Keeping Hamas strong enough to be an effective rival to Fatah - its West Bank rival - would prevent the possibility of a "unified Palestinian leadership with whom you would have to negotiate some kind of final settlement", says Khaled Elgindy, senior fellow on Palestine and Palestinian-Israeli Affairs at the Middle East Institute think tank in Washington DC.

It is always ironic to here someone support Hamas and the Intifada, when they would not accept Kehlani as a person. The Intifada is not the same as the Palestinian people, who are suffering greatly under the armed conflict that was initiated by Hamas leadership (likely in an attempt to stay in power). The total irony here is that Intifada leadership is definitely not pro LGBTQ. The total legitimacy of supporting people who are suffering greatly, is completely undermined by supporting a militant organization who is both anti-Jew (not just anti-zionist) and anti LGBTQ.

Gee, some of the comments in here are pretty hysterical. They make as much sense as "f* Arab Nationalism", "f* Palestine", or "f* pathetic Jews who have no sense of their own interests". Oh, I do believe that "f* Hamas" is in order.
