A Legal Guide for Lesbian & Gay Couples

Frederick Hertz and Emily Doskow

This jargon-free legal guide aids gay and lesbian couples in protecting their legal rights and status, covering everything from family-building to finances

Product Description

Now more than ever, it's important that you take the proper legal steps to define and protect your relationship in the eyes of the law. If you don't, you run the risk of being shut out of each other's lives -- and the lives of children you co-parent -- in times of medical, financial or personal crisis.

This guide provides helpful information about life within a gay or lesbian couple around the world, but focuses primarily on the United States and the rest of North America. Inside, you'll find pages and pages of useful content, including:

  • How to make practical decisions about living together
  • How to obtain domestic partner benefits
  • How to make medical decisions for each other when needed
  • How to take care of each other's finances when one partner is incapacitated
  • How to leave property to each other
  • How to have and raise children through adoption, donor insemination, surrogacy or foster parenting

While, per the Supreme Court's ruling in July of 2015, same-sex marriage is now legal across the United States, you'll still find that you may encounter significant legal barriers or challenges to navigate as a member of a same-sex couple. This guide is the perfect resource to aid you in doing so. As a bonus, your purchase of this guidet also includes access to a website that helps you create essential legal documents.

A must read for Gay and Lesbian couples

By Charles Benson, San Francisco, CA

A Legal Guide for Lesbian & Gay Couples is the perfect asset for any same sex couple seeking basic legal advice, and the best part is that its written in clear and simple English. Often members of Gay or Lesbian couples run into difficulty when trying to gain the same rights and protection allotted to straight couples. This can result in various legal issues ranging from how to gain the right of medical executor, rights of inheritance, and even to the division of property when a Gay or Lesbian couple breaks up. When my partner and I separated a year ago, I turned to this guide for help and never regretted it. The CD-ROM is an added bonus to the book, which offers several documents that can be used if a couple can't necessarily afford a lawyer. Consider this book essential to any couple hoping to alleviate legal problems down the road.
