hand in horns symbol at metal concert
Metal music has been a favorite media scapegoat for decades.

A New Jersey-area radio station focused on heavy metal is being targeted by evangelical Christians for a shutdown. They’re accusing the station of playing satanic music, and are demanding it be shuttered immediately.

No, those sentences aren’t from the 1980s. They’re from right now in 2020.

The station in question is WSOU, a longtime titan in the world of heavy metal radio that’s been operating on 89.5 in the New York metro area in its current form since 1986. They’ve broken acts as varied as Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, and Korn to the world.

They’re also a college station, owned by Seton Hall University - a Catholic school - which often puts their musical output at odds with station donors.

Now The Lepanto Institute, an organization that seeks to defend Catholicism from threats both external and internal, has the Seton Hall radio mainstay in its crosshairs.

Occultism? In My Metal Music?

The Lepanto Institute is calling on Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Newark and Chair of the Seton Hall Board of Trustees, to shut down the station, and have even started a petition demanding as much. Their complaints?

“WSOU programming has included graphic first person accounts describing demonically driven murder and mutilation of women and children, genocidal material calling for sadistic execution techniques from the middle ages employed by Nordic pagans against Christians, album artwork depicting a sex act on a mutilated corpse and virtually every form of occult practice, including curses, spells, explicit calls to satanic worship, human sacrifice and even the black mass, which is the satanic ritual desecration of the Holy Eucharist.”

Well, you can’t argue that that isn’t metal.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Content

All this panic over Satanism is very reminiscent of, well, the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and 1990s.

The Satanic Panic was a full-blown hysteria that swept the nation, manifesting initially in false fears of ritual abuse in daycare centers across the United States.

Those fears were the end result of a rise of both Satan-related media (The Exorcist, The Satanic Bible) and the rise of evangelical Christianity throughout the 1970s.

By the 80s, many Americans had not only a fear of a shadowy cabal of Satanists committing ritual sacrifices, but also the belief that it could be happening right in their own neighborhood. “Stranger Danger”, kids on milk cartons, well-publicized cases of serial killers - it all contributed to a culture of fear of one’s neighbor.

Pretty much every niche hobby or activity had their time in the spotlight as proof of society’s moral decay and Satanic influence. Video games, comic books, the roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, and horror movies were some of the favorite punching bags of the media, but perhaps none got it worse than heavy metal music.

Accusations flew about heavy metal music and musicians, including the belief that some metal bands were putting hidden Satanic messages in their music that could only be heard by playing the record backwards.

But many didn’t have to play the records backwards to find something objectionable: Tipper Gore, wife of Al Gore, founded the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), gathered together 15 songs with lyrics containing occult, sexual, or violent themes, and managed to get the United States Senate to hold a hearing on lyrical content in music.

Those hearings resulted in the ‘Parental Advisory’ stickers that now adorn album covers.

It would be a humorous anecdote of American history if not for the real-world consequences of the moral crusade. Most notably, the West Memphis Three were wrongly convicted of a trio of 1993 child murders in which the prosecution asserted they committed Satanic murder rituals.

They were only initially investigated because of their interest in the occult and love of metal music, and no witnesses or DNA evidence placed them at the scene of the crime. They were released in 2011, but are hardly the only victims of the closest thing to a modern day witch hunt.

The Show Must Thrash On

All that brings us back to the radio station. The Archdiocese has ignored calls to shut down the station or otherwise neuter its programming in the past, so it seems likely the Lepanto Institute’s cries will fall on deaf ears.

Seton Hall has already hand waved their concerns away before. But it’s entirely possible that a well-organized campaign could gain enough traction and lean on the Archdiocese hard enough that they feel compelled to do something.

For now though, rock on. 🤘

The light in the window is a crack in the sky

A stairway to darkness in the blink of an eye

A levee of tears to learn she'll never be coming back

The man in the dark will bring another attack

Your mama told you that you're not supposed to talk to strangers

So now that it's over can't we just say goodbye? (Bye bye goodbye)

I'd like to move on and make the most of the night

Maybe a kiss before I leave you this way

Your lips are so cold, I don't know what else to say

I never wanted it to end this way, my love, my darling

Many people love metal. I'm one of them. I get it....YOU don't like it, but why are you trying to take it away from me and the millions of others who enjoy it? Stop forcing your beliefs on others. I'm not going to start a petition to shut down Christian radio stations, don't YOU try to shut down a station others enjoy.

Here's the thing...Evangelicals are always whining about a "war on Christianity". There is no war. People are just sick and tired of Evangelicals trying to force their beliefs on others. Live and let live, dudes! If it's not physically harming you, let it go!

"demonically driven murder and mutilation of women and children, genocidal material calling for sadistic execution techniques??" Well goodness gracious, reading the Old Testament depicts a jealous, genocidal, infanticidal, abortionist, misogynist rape supporting, war monger God. When will these people pick up their bible and start reading from cover to cover? I do read it and highlight all the lies which Evangelicals paint about a "loving god." Stephen King, a superb Horror writer, could never construct something as evil and terrifying as the bible. The stories are prime examples of twisted and disturbed minds. Read it. There is no comparison with music.

I'm of Italian heritage on my mom's side. That "hook em horns" gesture is called a Cornu (Horns) and is a good luck sign.

I've listened to heavy metal since the days of proto-metal (Steppenwolf, Blue Cheer...) and have had no dark desires created by the music.

Then again, these are the same buffoons that think the magic in Dungeons and Dragons is real.

My mother's maiden name is Pistone, and my grandmother's maiden name was Maniscalco. You're right about the Italian horns gesture Steven, but in this nation, except for among Italian-Americans, that symbol means "Rock-'n'-roll"!!!, and is a greeting between rockers.

On the bill were Chcuk Berry, Bo Diddley, Litttle Richard and Fats Domino.

I went to what I consider my 1st proto-Metal concert in August 1968: Blue Cheer and Steppenwolf.

Ronnie was a very talented vocalist with a God-like range and ability to project.

He started out with a do-wop group back in the 50's called the Vegas Kings, and by the end of his life (passed in May 2010 from stomach cancer) was considered one of the preeminent figures in the heavy metal music genre.

Ronnie re-tagged the Cornu as "Metal Horns," which may have been a nod to his early training on trumpet.

I'm not a Satanist, but have read the Satanic Bible by Anton Lavey, and there's nothing monstrous about it. I've also had some good acquaintances who were Satanists, through which I know that Satanists don't believe in Satan or demons or Hell the way Christians do. If any of y'all want to know more about it, read the book, like I did. Besides that, there has never been any such thing as totally good people, despite the fact that a lot of people claim to be. I'm into balance, and being fully human. Good and evil are two of the many things I try to be balanced between. Too much goodness can be bad, and a little evil can be good, and is a whole lot of fun. I'm sure a lot more people feel that way than will admit to it, even to themselves. And if any of that truly beautiful heavy metal music contains subliminal Satanic influences it's only aimed at making people be themselves, and fully human, without condemnation.

      1. Pastor George Day's Avatar Pastor George Day

        Robert Edward Szekely,

First of all, that passage is from the Torah, so it originates with Judaism, not Christianity.

Second, Jewish Temple servants (aka Levites) performed no sexual practices at all in Temple worship. That was a pagan practice.

After a gig in tazmania, Bon Scott was abducted by Rosie (her real name) and dragged back to her place, where she skrewed his brains out all night.

The next day, he returned to the lads, telling them about the most amazing sex he had ever had in his LIFE. And this is Bon "Two Different Girl Every Night" Scott we're talking about here!

The next year, when AC/DC were back on tour in Tazmania, Bon went looking for Rosie again. When he found her, she had lost a lot of weight, and he said it just wasn't the same.

In everyday life, there is more than meets the eye. To reach the depths of truth, we must drag the waters

In a literal sense, dragging the waters means using a net or other device to search the bottom of a river or lake, often looking for bodies. In this song, the phrase is a metaphor for finding the deeper meaning, especially when it comes to people. Humans often adapt to their social surroundings and will tell you what you want to hear, and it is your job to question their motives and ascertain their real intentions.

In our interview with Pantera bass player Rex Brown, he explained: "'Drag the Waters,' that's something Dime [guitarist Dimebag Darrell] had that just turned into a little ditty that became a single, of all things. People look at it now and go, Goddamn. They try to get so technical with everything, 'Oh, how did they do that?' Well, it just came naturally. There was no set form how to do it, you just get together and start jamming. That's how you do stuff. That's another one of those 'one-note wonder songs' that worked. It's all about the groove."at one also the music video.

Last time I checked, the Donald had not succeeded in repealing the First Amendmen'ts guarantee of Freedom of Religion. As such, Evangelicals cannot deny Satan Worshippers their right to Free Speech, which is also guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Evangelicals empower Satanists. They just don't get that. That is what its all about. The more they try to stop the metal, the more the metal will grow. The Rockers will continue to Rock!

My Satanic Bible doesn't say anything about heavy metal, or being empowered by evangelicals.

Evangelical. How interesting is it that these evangelicals these quote" Bible believing people" know about heavy metal music anyway? I mean okay so some woman came home and found her husband listening to heavy metal music or her kids and she didn't like it and she wanted to control them so the only way she could control them was by making a big fuss about it

As someone who grew up on WSOU they have had to deal with this every 5 years or so. Although I do believe this is the first time the call has ever come from out side the school. There are many fully function alumni from WSOU that are working outside the station now. I for one would like to move to take the opposite stand and show the school why the station is a benefit to the community Plus we have science on our side. https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/rock/6620358/metal-1980s-study-metalheads-happy-adjusted

      Not exactly...

However, report admitted that the results could have been skewed by the fact that most of those involved in the study were “relatively high functioning individuals.” So in other words, those who made the really bad life choices usually aren’t the ones lining up to be studied by a scholarly journal. https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/metal-1980s-study-metalheads-happy-adjusted-6620358/

Wow, uh, "Satanism and homosexuality go hand in hand?" In what reality. Man is as he was made. Period. Everything else is human creation such as the tales of fantasy land in the "King James Version" of the bible. What? Church wasn't good enough so the king commissioned a bible he liked? Chosen passages. Great. What was left out? If you have read any of the accepted bible you would know it's a load of hogwash. There is murder, rape, sexism, child murder. ETC. You can prove and disprove anything you like in a fantasy novel, right? Satanism. A creation of Christianity. Believe it or not.

Even though I'm nothing like a Christian, thank the Goddess, next month I'll be listening to my CD of Luciano Pavarotti's Oh Holy Night. I especially like hearing him sing Sanctus from the Requiem, accompanied by the Wandsworth Boys Choir. I also like to hear him sing Bach's version of Ave Maria. I keep that CD next to my CD called Twisted Christmas. And I especially like the song from that recording called I'm Going To Dress Up Like Santa When I Get Out On Parole. Bravo! Figaro! Ho ho ho!

Janet Reno, AG Snow Queen, became a federal judge because to she sent to prison day care workers who abuse children, even killing dozens of babies in their care. They have children on record telling what happen to babies. Except it did not happen. The children lived for years with the guilt and when it came to light the children were force to lie, nothing happen to the lawyers.

Harry Potter books were burn because they taught children the arts of witch craft. The only science in them was to correctly identified plants. To bad burning of church patrons is still illegal.

But us kids were drinking, drugging, and having sex long before they invented rap, and had a really good time doing it.
