People with financial difficulties may think that holding onto every penny they have will help them pay their bills, but being stingy with your money tends to make people more stressed out.

There will likely come a time in your life when you need some help. Maybe it’s that you have just lost your job and don’t have a way to pay your mortgage this month. Perhaps you have just been diagnosed with a health condition and need someone who can take you to and from your many appointments. If you have been generous with your time and money in the past, people are more likely to want to help you.

Smart Giving

Now that you know some of the reasons why giving is good for you, you might be wondering how you should go about being generous. There are many different ways you can do this. It’s important to realize that while your heart will be in the right place, there are more and less effective ways to give.

Donating cans to a food banks is great, but they also need to be sorted, shipped, and aren’t always nutritious. However, if you give them money, they can use it to buy food at bulk pricing. The amount you spend on 1 can of food can actually buy the food bank plenty of fresh and healthy fruits, vegetables, meats, and bread.

When working with a charity, make sure they are a legitimate operation. There are several scams out there preying on your desire to help others. You can always double check the group’s credentials at the Charity Navigator.

Some charities are more effective than others. Look up exactly how much of the money and resources actually go to helping their cause as opposed to paying a massive salary for the CEO.

Find a way to donate your skills and not just money. If you know about marketing or finance for example, a charity might love to take advantage of that. Anything that you can give is a win-win for all involved.

    Mindfulness can be described as a state of active, reflective, open attention on the present or in the present.
    When we are mindful, we can observe our thoughts and feelings openly, without judging them good or bad.
    Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness helps you to live in the moment and awakening to experience and reacting with thought and excepting that sometimes you may or may not be able to change things.
    Some points to help
    •Take a couple of minutes to notice your breathing. Sense the flow of the breath, the rise and fall of your belly.
    •Notice what you are doing as you are doing it and tune into your senses. When you are eating, notice the colour, texture and taste of the food.
    •Don’t feel that you need to fill up all your time with doing. Take some time to simply be. When your mind wanders to thinking, gently bring it back to your breath.
    •Recognize that thoughts are simply thoughts; you don’t need to believe them or react to them.
    •Notice where you tend to zone out (e.g., driving, emailing or texting, web surfing, feeding the dog, doing dishes, brushing teeth, etc.). Practise bringing more awareness to that activity.

      Greetings in the name of the Lord!

      Meditation is an excellent method for achieving mindfulness in celestial time which consists of eternally consecutive moments of “NOW!” Our minds are always full of thoughts from one moment to the next. But there exists between them a brief moment of time when our minds become silent. In essence, there exists a space between our thoughts, and that space is a sacred space of silence.
      It is in that sacred space where I have found a mantra that requires only one sound. One never needs to move their lips or tongue to repeat this mantra, and that mantra is the word “Ahh!”
      The word “Ahh!” is the one syllable that is common to all the names of God throughout this universe! For example, “Ahhlahh!” “Jehovahh!” “Budhahh” “Messiahhh!” And the list goes on.
      I have found it very relaxing and mind-clearing as I repeat this sound of “Ahhh!” in between the sacred space of silence between my thoughts! If it works for me, perhaps it will work for you?

    My wife and I have been providing funds through Kiva for years. We found that many of the large charitable organizations consumed a considerable amount of their donations in administrative costs and, in some cases, very large salaries. While there is certainly a place for charitable giving, Kiva allows you to provide loans to small entrepreneurs around the world. We choose to focus on agriculture and in particular countries. Because the loans are eventually repaid (you are regularly kept up to date and reminded when you have repaid funds to re-loan), the recipients maintain their pride and dignity, are able to support themselves and their families without further assistance and your money becomes available to loan to others. You can become involved as an individual or a group.

    I believe this site to be an open exchange of rational and accurate information, as well as various beliefs. WW. I think it’s fair and appropriate to reply to any comments that contain information that is incorrect, bigoted or sheer proselytizing, as well as carrying on civil discussions on the variety of topics presented. I left the site about a year ago as it was populated by some with very extreme fundamentalists views, many of whom POSTED IN ALL CAPS!!!!! It appears that some of them have vacated or the moderation has increased. However, I’ve found that some of my comments were “waiting for moderation” and then disappeared, sometimes permanently, a couple of times to reappear days later. It’s a small price to pay for moderation that filters out the very vile comments. But in retrospect, I’m OK with the extremist comments as they do more to dissuade potential “believers” than they do to persuade them.
