We love to hear from our ministers, but because we receive such a high volume of e-mails and calls we ask that you please check to see if your question is answered below before contacting us directly. Thank you!

Is my ordination legal?

Ordinations from Universal Life Church Ministries are legal and recognized across the United States. Because we are a fully-incorporated religious organization, ULC ministers enjoy all the same legal benefits granted to clergy members of other churches. Upon applying for ordination, the applicant is deputized as a member of the ULC clergy. Your ordination credential, card-sized credential, and Letter of Good Standing can all serve as legal proof of your ordination. Note: they must include your full legal name.

Please note that the laws and statutes laid out by state and local governments for performing legal ceremonies like weddings can vary from place to place. For more information about the rules in your area, please review the Wedding Laws section of the site.

Where is my order? How long does it take to ship?

Orders are filled the following business day and typically arrive 3-10 business days after being filled (although there are exceptions). Please see our shipping policy for full details.

If your order is marked "delivered" but you haven't received it, here are some tips:

  • Look around to see if the driver decided to hide the package.
  • Check if someone else may have accepted the delivery.
  • Verify that you entered the right shipping address.
  • Look for a notice of attempted delivery.
  • Look for a slip notifying you of an attempted delivery.
  • Check inside your mailbox, or wherever you receive mail.

If you still cannot locate your order, or if your order fails to arrive in time, please contact us so we can help resolve the issue.

Does my ordination expire? Are there annual fees?

Your ordination never expires, nor will you be charged any annual or recurring fees. ULC ordinations are good for life (although you can always request to be removed from our rolls, if you wish.)

What can I do with my ordination?

Anything that a traditional minister can do! Your ordination enables you to perform religious ceremonies of all types: weddings, funerals, baptisms, house blessings, and more. You can even start your own ministry, if you feel called to do so.

Please visit the Minister Training center to learn about all the different ways you can use your ordination.

I was ordained by the ULC many years ago, but I cannot access my account. What next?

Please send an email to help@themonastery.org and provide proof in the form of an image of the original ordination.

How do I get a copy of my ordination credentials?

After your ordination application has been processed, you will have access to a digital preview of your ordination credentials on your account. To order a physical credential copy, just visit the Church Supplies section of this site.

Can I have my ordination emailed or faxed to me?

No, unfortunately. A physical ordination credential must have a raised seal from the ULC to be considered valid. Other physical documents require live signatures as well as notary seals.

Does the state where I am performing a wedding have special requirements?

Some states do have specific laws or requirements for wedding officiants. Please visit the State Wedding Laws page to see if your state has any funky rules or additional documents you might need to present in order to legally officiate a wedding. For a handful of states, we have also created special state registration packages that contain all the necessary documents to help simplify things for you.

I'm having trouble getting my ordination recognized in my area. What should I do?

Ordinations from the Universal Life Church Ministries are recognized across the vast majority of the United States. That said, we are aware of a distinct few problem areas where marriage officials will sometimes call into question the validity of ULC ordinations.

When speaking with a city or town clerk, kindly explain that you are a minister of the Universal Life Church located in Seattle, WA, that you are planning to perform a wedding, and that you'd like to know what documentation they need to see from you. Any lingering concerns they might have can typically be resolved by presenting official proof of your ordination.

However, if you continue to encounter pushback from government officials, please contact us directly to explain the situation.

How do I perform a wedding in a different state?

Your ordination is valid nationwide, regardless of the state where it was issued. However, you will need to find out if there are any specific requirements for the state where you will be performing the wedding. Please consult the State Wedding Laws guide to learn more.

What if my beliefs do not align with the ULC?

They probably do! The Universal Life Church Ministries does not discriminate when it comes to membership and eagerly welcomes people of all backgrounds and beliefs into the fold (including those who don't profess faith in any God/Gods). It is our steadfast conviction that everyone should have the right to practice their faith however they see fit – so long as they don't infringe upon the freedoms of others and obey the law.

Yes, please visit the Mail Order page for instructions. Do also note that this process may take significantly longer (1-2 weeks, typically). Failure to send correct payment, including shipping/handling fees, may delay your order.
